Round 19's team of under-performers

By Doran Smith / Roar Guru

This team consists of players who underperformed in Round 19 of the 2018 AFL season.

Backs: Dane Rampe was a part of the Swans defence that was beaten comprehensively. Heath Grundy had his second worst game for the year from a disposal point of view. Kade Kolodjashnij put in his worst display of the season from a statistical perspective.

Zak Jones was below his best and had two indiscretions. Nathan J. Brown would be disappointed with his performance, having little effect on the game. Someone that would also rue their output would be Daniel Rich.

Midfielders: Despite winning the game, the Cats had two players who didn’t perform at their best, those players were Cameron Guthrie and Joel Selwood. Chris Mayne had little influence on the contest against the Tigers.

Forwards: Ed Richards had his worst game for the season from a statistical perspective with five possessions. Lance Franklin was underwhelming for the second week in a row with just seven disposals.

Alex Sexton had a disappointing performance in Round 19 against the Blues. Ben Ronke was barely sighted for the Swans last Friday night. Ben Brown gathered under ten possessions on the third occasion this season and only managed to kick one goal for the Kangaroos. Will Hayward was underwhelming in Round 19.

Followers: Sam Jacobs had 36 hit-outs, compared to 66 for Max Gawn in his dual with Gawn. Gawn was one of the most influential players on the field. George Hewett of the Swans had little impact on the game against the Bombers last Friday night. Tim Kelly had under twenty disposals for the first time since Round 12.

Interchange: Jaidyn Stephenson was largely ineffective in Round 19. Despite featuring in most of the Lions games this year, becoming a permanent fixture in the Lions team, Oscar Mcinerney played a disappointing game last Saturday.

Travis Varcoe had a disappointing display in Round 19. In spite of playing every game this season, Jed Bews will be lucky to stay in the Cats team this weekend as he only had two possessions for the Cats last Saturday.

Gee wiz Freo got rolled by 11 goals and no one gets a game. Ross is silly enough to bring Dud Ballantyne back in soon so he will make it in your weekly side without doubt.

I do understand what a second ruckman is, but look at Mason Cox; he had eleven possessions and two goals. I still think Mcinerney can do slightly better, but I take your point. I think those young players are capable of more than they showed in their performances in round 19.

Last Week the Swans' back up Ruckmen, this week the Lions back up ruckmen. Doran you understand the idea that the back up ruckmen is going to have very little impact on games at the best of times.... And then there's games when there team has been soundly beaten. Oscar McInerney is a very small part. The fact he had very little influence on the game is not at all surprising. I also agree with Liam, young blokes like Richards, Hayward & Ronke are going to have genuine inconsistent games at this point in their careers. McInerney as well can be included in that group.

Ed Richards is capable of more than he showed in round 19. I also think that Will Hayward has the ability to play better. Not picking on players who have played under 50 games.

Even as a wce fan I'm a tad perplexed no eagle is named here.

Interesting that West Coast had the worst team performance of the week but all managed to miss selection.

Pulled you up on this the last time you did it, too. Ed Richards, regardless of the season he's having, is 19 and has played 17 games; Will Hayward is also 19, and has played 35 games. It is the weakest criticism to place them in a list of under achievers, because players in their youth are inconsistent. Pick on players that have broken the 50 game barrier, and are not still teenagers.
