England rugby union international Danny Cipriani has been charged with assaulting police during an incident in the English Channel island of Jersey.

The 30-year-old fly-half is also charged with resisting arrest, common assault, larceny, and being disorderly on licensed premises, police said.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Jersey Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning.

His English club, Gloucester, said in a statement: “Gloucester Rugby are aware of an incident involving Danny Cipriani in the early hours of Wednesday morning following an incident at a St Helier nightclub.”

The club confirmed he had been arrested and charged, and that he will be appearing in court.

A States of Jersey Police spokesman said: “This afternoon 30-year-old Daniel Cipriani was charged with common assault, larceny, assault on police, resisting arrest and disorderly on licensed premises.

“He’s been remanded in custody until his court appearance at the magistrates’ court at 10am tomorrow.

“He was arrested at the early hours of this morning following an incident in Mulcaster Street in St Helier.”

First time poster but my two piece. He’s made a mistake, and as a professional should know better. But as a bloke, I think we should cut him some slack. If this happened to a less high profile player in Gloucester there would be little coverage. It looks like there was little malice and little aggression anyway. I’m sure a lot of people reading this far have been in a team and know how easy it is to get to caught up in a good night out. I’ve been working in a fairly stressful environment for the last few years and can’t help but empathise (and i’ve never had the stress and the pressure of the press trying to rile me). After a long pre-season with the team I imagine it felt amazing to let go of that stress for an evening out with his new team - the guy got caught up in it. Then flash forward to being hustled by bouncers (never a nice experience) who have cameras that they could sell for hundreds of pounds to undo your career. Yeah I’d kick off in that situation. Give the guy a break. Let him play decent rugby and see if he is good enough to represent the country. After all that, lets decide if we want him in the team.

What a lovable scallywag. Well he would be if he could avoid assaulting people anyway. Not so likable when his antics include that.

The guy has had a serious drinking problem forever. He and Gloucester would be painfully aware of the fact so being in a club at 2.00am is plain dumb. Feel sorry for his mum. A single mother when he was six living on a council estate, she worked 18-hour shifts driving a cab to put him through private schools, giving him every sporting advantage. A mothers love is rarely earned - his deficit is larger than most.

Although his quote "these wrists are gold, loosen the cuffs" was pretty brilliant. What a goose, getting in a blue with a bouncer over wanting to take his drink out of the pub. Then doubling down by resisting the arrest. Such a shame when his rugby was looking good.

So now it seems that Nick Cummins wasn't the most embarrassing rugby personality overnight.
