Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge is unimpressed at speculation that Carlton and Gold Coast could receive AFL draft priority picks.
While Beveridge notes that the Suns will receive a high pick as compensation for losing Tom Lynch, the Bulldogs coach is worried that the AFL could give more help to the two struggling clubs.
Currently, the Dogs will have pick No.6 in the draft.
But there is growing talk that the Suns and Blues will play for priority picks at the start of the draft order.
That would push the Bulldogs down the order of highly prized early draft selections.
Beveridge said if the Suns and Blues receive priority picks, they should come at the end of the first round of selections – not the start.
“We’ll be pretty disappointed if these compensation picks come in before us in the draft,” the Bulldogs coach said.
“Our demographic as far as youth versus mature age isn’t dissimilar.
“We are where we are on the ladder and we’re building again.
“Who knows how far away that is?”
Beveridge noted that Carlton fielded a younger and less-experienced team against the Bulldogs on Sunday, but nearly won.

Carlton do not deserve a priority pick. Just because Ron Barrassi coached them and the establishment would like them back up the top by any means does not justify giving the Old Dark Navy Blues handouts and food vouchers. They have premiership players and an illustrious history. They should tap on it and not look for favours like some of the tad umpiring decisions they have had through the years that have yielded them premierships by hook or by crook.

Yep. Bevo is exactly right. His argument in this article is exactly right. If there's something you are trying to say, here's a hint. Say it. You are dithering around with something but you are not getting very far.

'Beveridge noted that Carlton fielded a younger and less-experienced team against the Bulldogs on Sunday, but nearly won.' Is the last line of the article . Your opening is 'Bevo is exactly right.Freo and WB have less experienced sides than Carlton or Gold Coast yet....'. Is what Beveridge noted right and Carlton have the less experienced team or is Bevo exactly right and WB have the less experienced team? Does that help clarify my original post ?

I thought the first was your headline.

You'll find that you might have forgotten Gold Coast and Freo in your correction. Wanna correct that?

Gday Don Freo , the article actually says the opposite , 'Beveridge noted that Carlton fielded a younger and less-experienced team against the Bulldogs on Sunday, but nearly won'. I would add that he uses both younger and less experienced. For what it is worth i do agree with Beveridge, in that any priority pick given should come at the end of round 1 picks .

Blair was a joke Macca as I know you don't want him. SHiel would be a huge pick up. Imagine Cripps feeding out to a running Shiel and popping one on Fasolo's head?

Good player McPharlin Don. Underrated in the east focused media after the Hawks failed to get the best out of him.

Why would we want Lycett? (or Blair) Two days ago Gaff was either staying in Perth or going to North, I think he will be having lunch with plenty of people in the coming weeks. I have heard rumours the blues are going to do a deal for Shiel and Setterfield from GWS.

Says the bloke who predicted Carlton were light years ahead of the Pies in development.

Macca, Gaff having lunch with Woosha, but Shiel seems destined for Melbourne. Can the Blues land Shiel and Lycett? (Besides Blair of course )

"If the AFL feels they can’t tolerate the Blues languishing at the bottom any longer, then they should offer the same help they have implemented at some other clubs – an overhaul of their off-field key roles" Dougie - the blues don't need off field help (membership up more than 10% this year despite finishing last, they have made a profit for the last 2 years 2017 bigger than 2016, debt is being reduced) and in the past few years they have replaced the coach, President, Head of recruiting, CEO and now Head of the Football department. The path the bleus are on and the players they have recruited will see them rise in the not too distant future regardless of whether they get a priority pick or not and unless the pick helps them get a trade for someone like Shiel I don't think it will help them get better any quicker (it might just make them peak higher and stay their longer) but if the AFL are hainding them out, the blues would be mad not to do everything they can to get one.

By 24 you could be in your 7th year in the system (the average career is 6). "Also using one game as a sample size is a furphy" I have shown on this thread that before the weekends game the blues averaged the most 21 and under players per game in the competition (8.9) and they played more than that on the weekend, the next best was the bulldogs at 8.5 and then daylight. So Don comments which brought Freo into the conversation (as usual) are incorrect.

You said it in your first sentence, Dougie; "I can't understand..." You just misunderstand Sandilands and Ballantyne. You also don't get what they offer apart from their playing talent. It's the common folly of many a non-Freo person who are informed only by stereotype and caught up in the social media feeding frenzy but unaware of the actual players. You do it in a classier, more humorous fashion but you are equally far from the mark.

Frawley was a free agent but Lake wasn't. Lake had one year left on his contract with the Dogs before he could walk to the draft (before free agency came in), so the Dogs agreed to trade him while they could get something for him. Surprisingly, the Hawks were the only club interested (and the only club with any brains). I still rate him as the second best full back I've seen, behind Silvagni, ahead of the likes of Langford, Scarlett and Rance.

Freo's list in good shape? I cant understand extending Sandilands contract - he turns 36 this year and has only managed to play 22 of the last 66 games. And Freo has a couple of promising rucks itching for a regular game. And why extend Ballantyne? He's been useless for the past 2-3 years now. These decisions smack of dillusion and desparation to me. The list cant be in good shape if Freo feels these two has-beens need to go around again.
