Jamaica qualify for Rugby League World Cup

By News / Wire

Jamaica made history by qualifying for their first tournament as they beat the United States to reach the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

The Reggae Warriors became the 11th nation to clinch their place in the 16-team World Cup in England thanks to a 16-10 in the final of the Americas Championship in Jacksonville.

Jamaica, who beat Canada in their opening game, led 16-10 at half-time after both sides crossed for two tries, the difference being the four goals kicked by Jy-Mel Coleman, compared to just one from Hull winger Bureta Faraimo.

Coleman, the London Skolars halfback, missed a chance to put two scores between the teams and Jamaica were forced into some desperate defence in a scoreless second half to hang on to their lead.

Leeds fullback Ashton Golding was named man of the match after defying a neck injury to play a key role in Jamaica’s famous victory.

The USA, who qualified for both the 2000 and 2017 World Cups, will have a second chance to book their place for 2021 via a repechage competition in 2019.

Those 4 are in the squad for the feel good factor. Just like the Italians, Lebanese, Tongans, Scots, Welsh, Irish etc last year did with their squads for the "World" Cup. They name a couple locals and they sit out the tournament and Aussies and Northern Englishmen play

Fred Kennedy .There are quite plainly 4 players for a start born and bred Jamaicans who play, from a Jamaican rugby league club, Duheny Park. It was clearly spelt out when the team's players were named. Duheny Park is not in Brixton nor Yorkshire ,nor in Kensington Palace. It's Jamaica.

The club the 4 played for Fred Kennedy, is in Jamaica ,they were Jamaican born and bred Jamaicans. The clubs of all the players was clearly spelt out, no matter how much you suggest otherwise. If you choose to BS then be my guest.

Yawn. - Rugby league players can't play for as many as they like. - Like every other sport, athletes can only play for who they are eligible. - League's only difference is that the period between changes is much shorter. - It's shorter because no effort was made for '123 years' to support internationals. - Actually, ALL of the international effort has been in the last 10 years. Thanks for playing.

You got it incorrect ,with the player background, as to suggesting there were no Jamaican locals in the squad. When quite clearly there were. And rugby league players cannot play for as many as they like.

In the past the Socceroos relied on Croatians, now they've stooped to the level of using Scots who've never set foot in Australia. What a farce they are.

One player in 30 years theyve used like that. He wont be able to play for another country unlike in Rugby League where he could play for as many as he likes. In Football its frowned upon. In Rugby League its relied upon Fred.. even after 123 years of existence

"No comp in Jamaica hey Crashy", let me keep you up to speed. On 22 October 2018 Jamaica launched a 2nd division club comp. This has meant the code has expanded into the St Elizabeth for the first time. Group 1: Duhaney Park Red Sharks Kingston Central hounds Liguanea Dragons and the expansion team Mona Pelicans. Group 2 CMU Spartans Portmore Eliminators and two expansion teams Cedar Grove Cyclones and St Bess Sledgehammers. Group 2 shows expansion has effected representation across all of South Jamaica. Jamaican rugby league is managed by a 5 local man board of directors. Rugby league is played in Parish communities, schools and universities. So much for your comments where you appear to have "crashed" out.

Just to keep you informed Mr Alias(Fred Kennedy) the Jamaican 19 man squad included Andrea McFarlane, Khamisi McKain , Marvin Thompson,Renaldo Wade all local players from the Jamaican RL club (Duhaney Park). Apart from others who were born in Jamaica or have heritage.

Probably not. The second tier nations wait until a few weeks before the Aussie, kiwi's and POM's announce their teams and then top up for world cup.

Crashy, as Mr Eharmony pointed out above, it was played in America, not England. And the Jamaican team has plenty of local Jamaicans in the team. The Jamaican rugby league has two divisions.

Perhaps you do a bit of research,( regular thread pest under another guise),and you will find out the very answer. NB if you had used the moniker "John F Kennedy", you'd be more believable.

While this is great news, the fact that there was 50 (max) people in the crowd, played in England with expat Jamaican/ English and with no comp in Jamaica, makes this result feel a little forced. Is the average Jamaican even aware this team exists?

I'm the wrong person to ask Harold, maybe Sleiman or Crosscoder will give you a link. Definately the type of games I'd like to watch from time to time though .
