Brisbane post first win of A-League season

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Brisbane have claimed their first A-League win of the season after an Adam Taggart double-strike led them to a 2-0 victory over Melbourne City.

Taggart scored in either half as the Roar eased past City at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, with the visitors surprisingly not even bringing star Uruguayan striker Bruno Fornaroli to Queensland.

Fornaroli’s omission was reportedly due to fitness issues, not injury, and sparked plenty of pre-match debate.

Coach Warren Joyce made the call despite Fornaroli notching his first goal of the season in City’s round four 2-0 win over Wellington last time out.

Former City and Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen labelled the decision to omit the 31-year-old a “huge gamble”.

“He’s (Joyce) trying to send a message out to the squad but it could backfire,” Sorensen told Fox Sports.

Leading player agent John Grimaud however praised the decision.

“Younger players are hopefully watching and learning that no matter how talented you are if you don’t present physically in the right shape you won’t play,” Grimaud tweeted.

City made a solid start but were undone in the 27th minute when a failure to react to a short corner by the Roar led to French winger Eric Bautheac whipping in a ball which Taggart nodded home from the near post.

The strike put the Roar into a lead for the first time this season.

Down at the break, City huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser with Kearyn Baccus and Lachlan Wales both performing well.

Wales came closest to restoring parity for the visitors when his run and shot in the 47th minute was deflected on to the post.

The absence of Fornaroli was often felt with many of City’s moves breaking down due to a lack of presence up front.

City’s frustrations were evident when captain Scott Jamieson was booked early in the second half following a physical altercation with Bautheac, who was also yellow-carded for the incident.

Some good build-up work involving Spanish import Alex Lopez and ex-Danish international Tobias Mikkelsen led to Taggart scoring to seal the game in the 66th minute.

Taggart’s powerful right foot finish inside the box was his fifth strike in as many A-League matches for the Roar following his off-season move from Perth.

The Roar will be sweating on the fitness of Bautheac after he was substituted midway through the second half, still hobbling from a challenge in the first half which hurt his lower right leg.

Australian under-23 international Stefan Mauk was also overlooked for the match after failing to pull up fit from training on his injured groin.

The Roar travel to in-form Adelaide next weekend while City host Newcastle.

The per capita argument applies to every team in every city. I pointed out that was a one-off drop from the special circumstances for two home games with 15,000 each - the first with a storm rolling through right before the game and raining until kick-off which if others knew the sold tickets were pushing 20,000. Though some still need to feed paranoia. Against City I have noticed the crowds generally fall short. Perhaps some folks spent money on the Socceroos game the week before (raining before the game also) and didn't back up a week later for the Roar. Some of this stuff is still making a mountain out of a molehill.

“more a gentle dig that Qld fans are quick to jump off a losing horse“ ... to what purpose? and what losing horse, we’ve only lost one all season ;) You might look at Jets who can’t muster more than 11,000 after last seasons success - so much for “made in Newcastle” then? It’s abviously been a struggle to get Supporters through the gates last season and now this, Brisbane have done their bit after three rounds so far - shame some other clubs supporters haven’t.

I wasn't questioning that Roar crowds were down JB, more a gentle dig that Qld fans are quick to jump off a losing horse. I don't care about crowd comparisons simply because we have a set of extraordinary circumstances where both Sydney sides are "homeless". WSW also played a regional match last week and dropped 5-7k off their average.

The promo for last night’s game was the $11,273 cross bar challenge (which the participant completely stuffed up lol) But I think the reason for a 9,900 crowd and not an 11,900 crowd is just the way we’ve been playing. Shades of last seasons start probably motivated plenty to stay at home and watch on tv. The next home game is right at the start of the school holidays as well, that should help.

I'd thought Roar went out of their way to attract crowds to the first two games with special deals for junior players, or something like that, but no special deals last night. As Waz said, family general seating area was near empty compared to the preceding rounds. Also, near non-existent away crowd. Let's hope Victory can pull a decent crowd in two weeks. Despite some negative comments, Roar are playing an attractive game with lots of skill on display.

I'd agree with that Waz, except Mikkelsen. Thought he was good bar his final touch, which was astray. Bautheac was outstanding - the guy really does put in a big effort and never gives in. Lopez too, our foreigners really starting to stand up.

Fadida - How would you describe these home ground figures, Game 1,-14,859, Game 2, - 15,129 and Game 3,- 9,925, (Sat afternoon, sun shining, and, after 4 matches not a win). You may have another way of describing these facts but I will rest my case until the next home game when we must hope that the "win" will bring back the "missing" 5000. Cheers jb. ps. if you are interested, after 21 matches, played the HAL average crowd has dropped from 13,997(last season) to 12,719, or if you prefer,9%.

Clubs don’t get any control over scheduling but after 15 years they should know their best timeslots. For Roar that’s probably 4PM arvo as they pull in thousands of kids. And after three games this season their average is 13,300 with only two sides better than them, both having had derby matches, so we’re doing okay.

Agree the time slot is an issue. Too early and it's too hot, too late and it's, well, too late for families.

Agree, was expecting 11k to 12k but the factors you mentioned have played their part. At halfway through the season we can debate the crowd stats with more confidence.

Glory need to realise they need to play their best young players to keep them and not treat them like they’re Keogh’s personal boot boys. Clearly you’re enjoying being top of the table, which is good as it happens so infrequently! I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like to for Roar to be top ... still, we look at Glory the same way we do wanderers - we know you’ll choke in the Grand Final. You always do.

Have you been to Perth, i have been to Brisbane and it's not too bad. Oh, and that reminds me again, aren't we top of the table.

I doubt it. At the very least he’s got to be enjoying the fact every away day is not a long-haul slog plus he not living in Perth any more. Both good reasons for no regrets.

Yeah, nearly 10,000 is probably just under the long term average vs. City which isn’t all that flash bar the Cahill game. And as you say the crowd goes up and down with various factors - performance and results haven’t lived up to preseason expectations, Saturday night games aren’t popular with parents/kids whereas a Saturday/Sunday arvo game pulls in 3-4,000 kids there were less than a couple of hundred in the family section last night and finally the game was on FTA so if you’re picking a game to miss, this is the one to miss. Should have been 11-12k all the same but 0.9/goals/game at home for the last year and a bit doesn’t inspire anyone to get up and go either.

First two games about 15,000 each. Last night just under 10,000. Make of that what you will. No point anyone writing a thesis about it. Crowd figures change.
