LISTEN: What's the deal with the West Coast Eagles?

By The Roar / Editor

The 2019 AFL season has been an unpredictable one for many clubs, and the West Coast Eagles are no exception.

Are they a premiership contender? Will they remain outside the eight? Is it simply too early to make a call?

On the Game of Codes podcast, Roar AFL Expert Marnie Cohen joined Editor Daniel Jeffrey to dissect the impact of West Coast’s forgettable fortnight of footy and how they’ll respond over the coming weeks.

Listen to the discussion:

The reigning premiers started the year with a shock 44-point loss to the Lions, which was enough to prompt the usual murmurs of a premiership hangover. It didn’t take long for the Eagles to restore faith among fans and re-establish their 2019 credentials by dispatching the Giants, Magpies and Dockers in successive victories.

However, a comprehensive loss to Port Adelaide at home followed by an equally disappointing result in Geelong has question marks looming over West Coast’s season once again. The quality of the Eagles’ opposition over the last two weeks is undeniable, but the results indicate Adam Simpson’s men have some work to do if they want to go back-to-back in 2019.

West Coast will be favourites when they host the Suns in Perth in Round 7 before travelling to Melbourne to take on the Saints.

Brander has been thrown to the wolves!! First game last year Sydney at the SCG we never play well there, next game he played Brisbane at the GABBA first game this year everyone was bad then the cat's at GMHBA stadium! We never win there and all of the Eagles were awful. Why not give him the Sun's at home for god sake he was never going to get confidence playing at those grounds surrounded by terrible play from the whole team????????‍♂️

Come on guys I think Brander should be a given more of a go. How many games has he really been able to show us has talent. I think the Eagles should rest Oscar Allen and Jack Darling and put Brander along side Kennedy and let him show us that he is up to AFl standard . Darling has enough time to tear a game apart and he has not. Oscar Allen, Brander and Waterman are the future for the Eagles and they should be given more opportunity than they have.

I agree 100% on Jetta absolute shocker, never has liked hard work, time to go for good. Darling needs 3 weeks in the WAFL, i really cannot work this guy out. There has to be someone better than Matsen ! Allen will be fine, he is highly talented and like most kids will have poor games occasionally.

change what's not working now! Darling, Oscar Allen, Brander, Jetta and Masten back to the WAFL. Brander is not up to AFL standard so why we drafted him is a mystery & Jetta is plain lazy and his second efforts are non existent. Waterman, Matty allen, Ah Chee and Brooksby deserve a shot . Stop the rot and get some confidence back . If teams have worked us out then change to repel , dont stay the same is that too hard ?
