The Wallabies need another Kiwi coach

By Bill Chapman / Roar Rookie

First, a disclosure: I was and remain a Robbie Deans fan. He suffered enormously from being characterised as an outsider, and worse, a Kiwi.

His winning percentage (56.80%), often with seriously reduced man power, is second only by a small margin to Eddie Jones (57.89%).

The playing stocks in the Jones era – immediately after our best ever boss Rod Macqueen – were arguably much deeper and better than what Deans had access to.

It has been downhill, in fact, with Ewen McKenzie at 50% and the incumbent Michael Cheika at 47%.

Much has been written about the Cheika era but the facts speak for themselves. The skill levels of our national team have gone backwards and there is no discernible style of play.

Indeed, the approach seems to be a case of ‘go out and have a go’. This is in part attributable to a general lack of on-field leadership as well as the absence of adaptability by both the coach and his leadership group.

Help is on the horizon, however, as all the noise suggests Dave Rennie – a Kiwi via Scotland – is firming as the next Wallabies coach to succeed the lamentable Cheika.

Rennie is untested at international level. He has an impressive record at provincial level and, unlike Cheika, seems to be a very balanced, thoughtful and considered individual.

Australian rugby badly needs some quick wins in the post-Cheika era to restore some level of interest and support from the declining rugby community.

Assuming Rennie gets the job – there aren’t any obvious local candidates – it will be fascinating to observe whether the critics of Robbie Deans get behind another Kiwi at this crucial time.

It will be equally fascinating to observe what change in style, tactics, skill and personnel occurs.

A change at the top cannot come soon enough.

Where they are from is irrelevant. The point I was making is the poor coaching and structures that are in place in Australia. These players were stagnating here yet when they left overseas they started hitting (or exceeding) their potential.

Skelton, Taavao, White and Debreczini are New Zealanders! Only one of them Debreczini would be welcomed back in fact he's lapping up the quality rugby with the Chiefs, he's home for good!

Clifto! You have the same defeatist Australian oriented attitude as Peter K! , Just remember Deans was the Coach and a good one at that, all Australia had was a bunch of over hyped egotistic self style so called rugby players who, if they were anywhere else would never have got a game!

You won't see Dave Rennie Coaching in Australia, be assured, or any other Kiwi Coach either! ~ Most of those Top Kiwi Coaches including Rennie are overseas plying their trade Coaching other International sides but there's none here in OZ! ~ It was only a matter of time also that Cron the Asst Coach of the Tahs did a runner also as he knew what was happening and he and his Family are New Zealand Rugby Royalty anyway!

PeterK. And that's exactly what Deans did, try to turn it around and because of that he got the shove because of a conspiracy within, you know that as every else does mate! It was Australian Rugby attitude which was bad that caused the whole debacle!

PeterK You know this as fact mate? ~ Because it seems as if you know more than most of us, or have you spoken to Robbie and asked him "what happened", because he as Head Coach of the Australian Rugby side had the license to do as he wished providing it was within the realms of International rugby! ~ so he did and your guys didn't like being told how to play and what to do by the Coach because of him being a New Zealander and a top coach at that!

JD Kiwi! ~ And that is the very reason that rugby in Australia will very likely never ever be a top International side, because of the very attitude they have of them needing a Coach with ''typical Australian Way'' of which there is no such thing! You say "His style of coaching was tailored to the handling of Kiwi rugby players who as a whole are more, team oriented and hard working", ~ You are exactly correct and that's the very thing he was attempting to instil in the players here in Australia and they on the whole just did not like being coached with that authority by one of the best Coaches in Rugby!!

It would be a surprise of major proportions if any Kiwi Coach came here to be the Coach of any Rugby Team, let alone Dave Rennie! The treatment of Deans was deplorable particularly the way it came about and no Coach regardless of who it was deserved that rubbish! Robbie Deans was and still is a very, very, good rugby Coach and did nothing to deserve the crap he got here in Australia, ~ it was simply a group within a group putting their heads together to sabotage the Coach in several ways and more or less deciding that they would do anything they could to ensure he was removed that, and the fact that he dumped Giteau for carrying on like a clown because he wasn't made Captain of the side then dropped altogether didn't help at the time either! The Team was sabotaged from within by a group of players some of whom are still involved with the Wallabies simply because they didn't like his methods and his ''do as you're told'' attitude, in short they detested the fact that a Kiwi Coach was Coaching them, the "Wallabies" at all, the preference being of course they wanted an Australian Coach who coached the "Australian way'' (whatever that is), who do those Kiwi Coaches think they are anyway, ~ and as someone says on here, "the us versus them mentality is far too deeply ingrained in the general Aussie' Rugby psyche to accept Kiwis as Coaches". That is the reason it will be very unlikely that you will see any New Zealand Coaches doing their stuff in Australia! It seems it matters not that those very Coaches are in the main the best Coaches anywhere in the World!

The evidence is there in spades. Australian cricket didn't fall off a cliff because two players were banned. Like the All Blacks, Australian cricket is much bigger than two players. They fell off a cliff because they tried to change the culture to suit the rest of the worlds opinion. They havn't returned to the glory days because Warner and Smith have returned. They were coming back before their return. Because, the smoke has cleared and Justin Langer has reinstated the arrogant ozzy swagger. Australians across pretty much every sport perform best when they believe in themselves intimately. Granted, it has also been their downfall. But not as often as when they try and be what they are not.

The slide started with senior players having too much say in who they want as a coach, the likes of Gregan, Mortlock, AAC, Horwill, and more. They got rid of Nucifora, McKenzie and Dean's, because they didn't agree with their coaching styles.

The problem over the last 15 years I. Australian rugby, has been player power, they have been given too much power to talk, and it has been to the detriment of rugby in this country. Not in the last couple of years, but when have we ever seen AN all Black protest about who they want as a coach?, it never happens they represent the Jersey and the lagacy, their words are spoken on the field. Deans had it against him from the start, had he not been voted out by the players and behind the scenes powers, Aus rugby could have been a real powerhouse by now, but too many anti progression types, cutting down anyone that can help, that isn't Australian, I see no recovery for the game in Australia with those people around.

Kiwikrs I just read your post and couldn't agree more. I don't see a Kiwi being acceptable to Aussie teams unless they get over the "hero worship" and silver bullet mentality. Winning is built from the base up not by plugging so called gaps with "the solution" (code for some superstar). Having said that, Deans was a good coach but he was a lamb to the slaughter. I don't think he realised that the Aussie rugby politics were (and still are) to put state and mates first and the success of the national team second. And to those who think he took over a team of champions think again. The team was in disarray when he took it over and this was masked by a final great game against the AB's. The games prior to this were pretty average. This added to the serious cultural issues in ARU and the national team that resulted in his predecessor walking away. Deans was and is a great guy, a great coach and he was good for the Australian team. He cleaned up (mostly) the culture and brought in some new blood . He has received little acknowledgement from RA or Cheika for this but he did a very good job in a difficult situation. No Kiwi's should bother trying to take on the WB's coaching gig. They'll just get the same BS treatment.

Time to go with another former Brumbies coach (they perform the best and pick the best teams), Stephen Larkham. Australia is not NZ. Robbie Deans selections debacle set Aust back 10 years.

The team up to 2010 had defensive issues but they at least scored points. After the WC he tightened up defence but they lost the plot in scoring and lost to teams they should never have been losing to.

Well two but one is in the pulpit or the witness box - Genia is class - though not as consistent as he used to be - but he is the puppet master for the Wallabies and Rebels when he is on song

Can’t agree Ozzie’s can’t match kiwi running rugby. For one that’s when they’re at their best. The climate allows for it more and most of the greatest players are ball runners... campo, Ella, Folau( god bless im), larrkham, lynagh and many more. League is full of great ball carriers and for me it’s part of the oz rugby psyche.

Ooh that’s a cheeky and unproven yet believable comment. How would one validate that argument I wonder. It’s as though kiwis can coach other countries... but not Ozzie’s?
