Matthew Nicks officially appointed as Adelaide coach

By Steve Larkin / Wire

Matthew Nicks has been appointed coach of AFL club Adelaide.

Nicks replaces Don Pyke, who quit last month.

The appointment of Nicks was confirmed by the Crows on Tuesday before an afternoon media conference.

Nicks was a senior assistant coach at GWS last season, joining the Giants after filling various assistant coaching roles at Port Adelaide since 2011.

The 44-year-old takes over at Adelaide with the Crows in a state of flux, missing the finals for the past two seasons after losing the 2017 grand final.

In addition to Pyke’s resignation, Taylor Walker has stood down as co-captain and an external review into the club resulted in the sackings of football manager Brett Burton and senior
assistant coach Scott Camporeale.

Several players are exiting the South Australian club with confirmed moves of Eddie Betts to Carlton and Cam Ellis-Yolmen to Brisbane the first in a string of departures before Wednesday night’s end to the trade period.

Ruckman Sam Jacobs (GWS), defender Alex Keath (St Kilda) and utility Hugh Greenwood (Gold Coast) are all expected to move on while key forward Josh Jenkins is seeking a trade but has yet to field an offer.

Forward Riley Knight is off-contract and has been linked to Sydney while several rival clubs including Gold Coast have pitched multi-million dollar offers to midfielder and reigning club champion Brad Crouch, who is contracted until the end of the 2020 season

The Adelaide-born Nicks is the ninth man appointed as full-time coach of the Crows since the club’s AFL inception in 1991.

Nicks played 175 AFL games for Sydney from 1996-2005 after being recruited from West Adelaide in the SANFL.

Courses are free but I suspect it may take quite a while. You can lead a horse to water ...

Game 1 will tell. If Sloane and Matt and Brad Crouch are in the middle then it was a bad appointment.

The Myth Busters could've done a whole series on the imagined things wrong with SA and other attendant untruths. When I taught Design I'd get the kids to contemplate the incontrevertibility of this statement, "Perception is Reality". ---- The worst thing about SA is it doesn't get the Music acts the others do yet the meg-metropolii of Newcastle and Geelong do??? ---- Yet SA has been progressive in many areas of society and endeavour. SA is overrepresented in inventions and at the forefront of legislation protecting the individual. ---- I think it goes back to German settlement and being the most severely affected by the Depression. Its kinda stuck. ----- Unfortunately we are cast erroneously by the Eastern states.

Well heres the thing - you can't as it is. This isnt a new thing for the Crows either... although its never happened on such a scale the Gold Coast are even almost feeling for Adelaide i remember reading an article years ago suggesting Adelaide were incapable of retaining non SA players - an issue that doesn't seem to effect players sent to WA or Vic from other areas of the country.

Maybe he just pre-emptively ripped it all out now to save himself having to do it during the season next year? God knows I've got a fair bit less than I had 2 years ago.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable having a head coach who's bald. How can we retain our players if the coach can't even retain his hair?

You don't need a specific leadership and culture manager for goodness sake. It comes from within. The coaches and players should be showing leadership and developing a culture. Look at the lions. They appointed a coach who surrounded himself with good people. A coach who leads by example. Have you seen how Fagan interacts with his players that's how you get a good leadership and cultural environment.

''....appoint a leadership and culture manager' Ah yes, that's just what you need at a footy club... another person who's job title nobody can pronounce getting in the ear of the players. Crikey, its a footy club, not a Deepak Chopra faith healing group.. ''you see ball, you get ball'' end of story.

I’ve now had another message that has been sent to be vetted by the “1984 Board of Thought Control”. Orson Alls Welles (that ends in a hole in the ground)

I wish Nicks well. I'm hoping he is his own man and stamps his own imprimatur which will allow to stand and die on his methods. I also hope he is direct, honest and clear with the players. I hope he works well with Sloane as he is the heart n guts of the outfit. The true leader of the team. ----- "As a result of the reviews, Adelaide will also appoint a leadership and culture manager." Great, just what we need, a 149-seater as our coach gets longer. Nicks would have every right to tell this manager "thanks, but no thanks". I don't care what ya say, you can't manufacture "leadership and culture". That is an inherent quality amongst people who want to be there. ---- And what of Fagan and Chapman walking? What did they deliver for their salary? (Not very much). If they don't go the clean out will be ineffective. There is no fire or angst in these guys. These guys remind me of batsmen pinned to the crease by a spinner. I feel they've never taken the steps down the pitch to smack it back. They are blood brothers to Gilon.
