A-League Round 11 hot and cold

By Giacomo Bruno / Roar Guru

A look into who performed and underperformed in Round 11 of the A-League.

Hot
Ulises Davila: Put in another impressive display against Sydney FC. As well as scoring the goal which put his side in front, he registered five shots with three coming inside of the box. He displayed his ability to get into attacking position. He also had a pass accuracy of 83 per cent completing 35 of his 42 passes.

Ola Toivonen: Stepped up when his team needed him most, inspiring his side to a derby win while carrying an injury for most of the game. Scoring two goals from his three shots inside the box, he was an accurate finisher.

Diego Castro: Scored two and assisted two in his side’s dominant performance. Scored the opening goal of the game which helped set the tone for his side. Was accurate by foot with 35 of his 42 passes finding a target (83 per cent pass accuracy).

Milan Djuric: Scored one of the goals of the season which put his side in front and ensured his side took all three points. His 86 per cent pass accuracy emphasising his efficiency put foot successful making 31 of his 36 passes.

Cold
Jamie Maclaren: After starting the season hot, Maclaren went nearly unnoticed the game against the Victory. Though he had two shots for the game he struggled to trouble the Victory defence and will be looking to bounce back and rediscover his hot form.

Newcastle Jets: Didn’t put up much of a fight in the second half when the going got tough. The Jets managed to stay competitive with the Glory, but once the Glory got on top there was no stopping the floodgates which resulted in their heaviest defeat of the season, losing 6-2.

BBL does not go on for all season which is why Foxtel 150-200 million cricket spend is the worse decision they have made. The BBL only goes for two months so two months of Kayo so they need 4 million people to subscriber to Kayo for 2 months to pay for what they are giving them for it and I have yet to hear of a single person say they subscribe for it.

For the next City game the tickets behind the goals and in the corners are $29 then move an aisle across on the wing and the price increases to $60. I just find that bonkers. For that money you can pretty much spend a day at Margaret Court Arena at the tennis, take the family to the BBL or the family to see a movie Don’t know what planet they are on thinking $60 is a fair price for a melb city game.

BBL down, A League down, maybe there is just too much on and people have budget constraints, can't get to everything

If we are critical we can call most goals out for inept defending but I don't do that I was sitting along the end line 20 metres away The ball was crossed in, defender simply had to tap it out, instead it game off the inside of his shin, hit the keeper and bounced right in front of Toiva who tapped it in

This round continued the large drop in attendances at matches. Less than 50,000 at this round. What’s being done to fix this .

Nearly every positive moment during sport contests between 2 teams or 2 players, can be viewed as either: a) ineptitude on the part of the vanquished competitor; or b) high quality on the part of the successful competitor I've noticed people who view sporting moments as (a) are always "Glass Half Empty" with their views on everything in life; and (b) are "Glass Half Full". I've noticed Mr Aussie Rules under his various guises on this forum is always (a). I hope you find something to pleasure yourself with, over Christmas.

I thought they might just do the banner when tests were on but no, it looks like it will be all BBL season long and then I guess when the AFLW and AFL commence there will be banners for that as well. If somebody is into the pyjama league then surely they don't need to be reminded of when a game is on.

Second goal was due to some inept defending and a bit of luck

Toivonen scored the goals but he is not the sole contributor to the goals. Apart from Ola, Goal 1 required Basha to persist when he nearly lost the ball. It required Elvis to chase a ball that many others might've given up on. It required Nabbout to deliver a 1st time pin point accurate cross to the back post. Goal 2 required Basha to deliver an 80 m diagonal pass to Nabbout who meets it cleanly on the volley. Then there's a bit of luck involved with a rebound off the post, but, if the City player doesn't intercept, it's likely Ola would've scored. Melbourne Victory didn't have a poor performer. If I had to choose a 90 minute POTM, I'd choose Robbie Kruse, Tim Hoogland, Migjen Basha or Elvis Kamsoba. Ola was a bit player, who gets the name in the spotlight because he scored. Nabbout was as involved in the goals as Ola & Nabbout was far more involved to get into positions to score 3 other chances.

An entertaining round of football with plenty of drama particularly enjoyed Victory/City and the Mariners/Adelaide games. Great to see some of the teams that have been struggling step up and score some great goals. The use of younger players, by many teams, who made significant contributions was great to see. Also enjoyed a couple of W-League matches with Canberra presenting some good attacking football to win against the Adelaide 13 which included the commentators whose bias was unsubtle. Weekend marred by Foxtel continually advertising BBL Cricket on the screen during A-League matches, encouraging viewers to switch off A-League and turn to bogus cricket games (with doctored pitches), while at the same time taking up screen real estate with a bright white banner. Foxtel must be in the hole for a large amount of money to warrant pirating viewers from Football to BBL. I guess the next banner in the Foxtel top right corner will be Optus Sport advertising EPL matches.

Stajic, is a fascinating coach, very intelligent. He is doing an amazing job at the CCM with the players he has at his disposal.
