What I like about the six-again rule

By The King of the World / Roar Guru

Since the resumption of the season in May, the six-again rule has been introduced.

Not everyone likes it but I think it’s pretty cool.

Then again, there’s a lot of advantages and disadvantages to the rule. I don’t really have to explain them because they speak for themselves. I will however explain what I do like about this rule.

1. It makes the game faster
With the six-again rule, instead of the referee blowing the whistle and calling for a penalty to stop all the momentum, it keeps the swing of things going and saves some time on the clock.

2. It delivers more excitement
It’s bringing another factor to the game and makes it look unpredictable. The team in possession are given more opportunities to strike.

3. It is a defensive test of will and endurance
If you’re on the team doing extra defence after the six-again rule, it is going to suck because it means you’ll have to defend more. At the same time, it could either bring out the best or worst in your team when the extra defensive load is required.

I have heard both positive and negative feedback about this rule. As I mentioned before, I love this rule and I think it’s pretty cool. One fact I’ve learnt is no matter what rules are introduced, not everyone will like it. It’s a natural fact of life.

I wouldn’t mind if the shoulder charges and the biff came back but we can rule that one out. I was annoyed when they were outlawed but looking at it now as a matter of player safety, it’s the right call. State of Origin may not be the same without the biff but it’s a game of footy, not Street Fighter.

The game of rugby league has evolved massively and as fans, we will evolve with it. The six-again rule has made things better for the game. It is one of the best things to be introduced in the game in the last decade.

This year has been tough but with the footy bringing us fans nothing just joy and excitement, let’s be happy for it.

So to all the Roarers, are you a fan of the six-again rule? Why or why not?

Hi F18, I'm not a fan of the six-again rule because the team has the choice now of a tap restart or a kick so why take that away? There is no need to make the game faster and holding down is penalised and sin binned if repeated. These events should stop the clock but they can't be rushed for the viewers. How does the n tackle rule deliver more excitement? The defensive test should be a test of skill not will and endurance. My rule changes would be to end the bomb by allowing only field goals on the 6th and allow a bomb to be punched dead. Teams would try to score a try on each tackle rather than five safe hit ups followed by the lucky dip bomb.

So we wait until the last round of the season to bring in a raft of rule changes. these are footballers, not rocket scientists.

I'm a fan, but I'm sure it could do with some tweaking. The main issues seems to be the consistency, or lack of it, in how the rule's applied. The other issue I find hard to fathom is hearing why the rule was applied, because that's often not real clear. Other than that, it works for me and has certainly made for a better spectacle, IMO

It was a simple solution to a big problem and it works.
