Is Damian Willemse the next Springbok 10?

By Pundit / Roar Guru

Damian Willemse has always been a player with X-Factor. Imagine a back-three wearing the 10 jersey with Le Roux-esque ball skills. That is Willemse.

However, as a flyhalf he was always lacking. He seemed to be a player with the skills and a multi-cylindral game but lacked several crucial aspects.

What were these aspects? He was a great flash 10, but as a general he did not seem so. His horrendous game in 2020 Green versus Gold was showing that.

His disorganised game showed poor positioning, a hurried and rushed game that ultimately resulted in errors.

Once he has fixed those problems, he could well be a firm second choice under the currently injured Handre Pollard.

His gameplay problems lay a lot in his distribution. Great for the highlights package, but he could not really keep the attack rolling phase after phase.

However, his recent performance against the Griquas causes me to think twice about writing him off like that.

The Stormers had recently signed Warrick Gelant, and Willemse and Gelant have formed a strong partnership in terms of playmaking.

Knowing he had a playmaker out wide with pace and tactical mastery, he got the ball wide to Gelant.

The Stormers first try for the Griquas comes off this.

It is purely Gelant’s agility and footwork that gets them the try, but the solid distribution from Damian Willemse got Gelant in that position with a tunnel pass through a screen of forwards. Gelant darts, beating defenders and gets the ball away in the wide channel with an offload, opening the defence for the Stormers to score.

His flashy play was prominent, with one pass building the space for Gelant to attack and the play almost comes off. The wide pass gets the angle for Gelant to dart, fix, and fire away a pass. However, a fumble from the winger ends the play.

His distribution was excellent against the Griquas, reminding me of Handre Pollard’s deadly passing. It may not be as good, but it is certainly up there.

On the other hand the Griquas are not a strong team in themselves, and perhaps the pressure was not up there for him to be hurried. That is the pessimistic side.

On the positive side, perhaps his distribution has really become as excellent as it seems, and he is one big step closer to being the prototypical Springbok flyhalf.

In my article on Springbok flyhalves, I concluded that the prototype for a Springbok flyhalf is all-round solidity.

The much-required skills of a good Springbok flyhalf; solid in these areas-distribution, goal-kicking, temperament, rugby IQ, tactical passing and kicking, and a solid rock in defence.

A very South African flyhalf is very good for South African rugby, and I am starting to wonder if Willemse is one.

He displayed tactical excellence in passing and his distribution was good. His tackling is generally solid so that is not a problem.

The tactical intelligence to link with Gelant was very effective. His temperament is where I think that he may have problems. This was a game against a weak side like the Griquas, and perhaps the reason why Willemse performed.

His goal-kicking has improved since that Green versus Gold Springbok Showdown and he will continue to do so at this rate.

As I said in my article on Springbok flyhalves, I also mentioned that they needed a creative edge in attack-Willemse has a brilliant one in his pace and running game.

If his good performance was really that he had become a better distributor, then he is well on his way to become the prototypical Springbok 10.

Only time will tell if he is truly capable of suiting the prototype and realising his potential.

I think you are miss categorizing Gelandt a bit, he has a fantastic skill set as second play maker. If I had to raise concerns it would be positioning and high ball, but I really him in the Willie role. Fassi is a spectacular athlete, but his skills have failed a couple of times in Super Rugby. I would look at his as a winger while he develops for the time being.

At the moment Willem se looks like he makes up his mind when he receives the and then doesn't react to what the defenders are doing. I lost count of the times he decides to do the delayed pass or stepping without fooling anyone. I think he needs a couple of seasons before he fulfills his potential as a player. One thing I would say is that he seems to be a very coachable player. At u20 he was a weak defender, but came back solid as a rock. This year he seems to have added a couple of meters to his kicking game. For me that bodes well for his development as a player. In the immediate term I'd like to see him play for 12 while he develops.

For me Willie is gone, Gelandt is now clearly better and Fassi is a freakish athlete. Vermeulen is playing rediculously well at the moment. He'll be the first player picked as long as he can keep up his current form. Little worried about his back up though, locally Notshe has been the best 8 going around, but he is very different kind of player. Dan du Plessis has apparently been good, but he will feel like a bad tribute band after Vermeulen.

What about Johan Goosen? Rumor has it that he might return to South Africa either with the Bulls or Cheetahs.

Actually just thought of something. Thoughts on Dylan Leyds as a Le Roux replacement? Similar in how they read the game.

great draw-and-pass skills + pace. He can do the WLR role while they rest him to preserve his top form for the WC 2023 and ideally every game he plays

I think Sharks Fassi has been targeted as Willie's successor. Super exciting talent.. Has pace, size and smarts.. Reminds me a lot of Israel Folau.

Rassie sticks to who he thinks is best. However, a ball-catching instead of a ball-dropping wille means that the springboks get opportunities on the first touch, not the opposition. Also, his run-back with skills, pace and footwork can create tries of first phase touches

I think the Boks could get into trouble if they continue picking ageing warriors like WLR, Vermuelen. I love them as players and understand the logic behind wanting them for the Lions, but I fear it could lead the Boks to running into trouble from 2022. They will need a good succession plan.

Willie is highly regarded by the Bok coaching staff.. He came under major scrutiny during the World Cup for dropping a number of high balls but what emerged during the doccie Chasing The Sun was that he played from the quarter finals with a major shoulder injury..it got so bad that he suggested to Rassie not to select him for the final.. Rassies response was to put together a highlight package of Willie’s influence in tries scored.. About 8 of them and showed it to the whole team.. And selected Willie anyway.

I'd love to see DW, as the next Bokke No10. Give him a chance and I think, he will mature into a bloody good, international No10.

https://www.threeredkings.com/the-double-pivot/ And till pollard started playing like he did in 2019, his impact was limited. If you want a creative outlet you need a strong pivot, as shown in this analysis.

the problem is due to pollard’s inconsistency rassie had to use wille who peaked in 2018 and then dropped in 2019. Now that Pollard is reliably brilliant, they coud use Fassi/willemse/gelant at 15 in in-between games to get wille to peak by 2023 :rugby:

Agree with that. Also, I think Willemse has trouble changing his mind. Seems to get stuck in one mode.

De Allende is very under rated hey. Quite a complete 12 for what we need. I like each of the players you've mentioned but they all lack something that De Allende has.
