Eagles brace for fired-up Pies

The pressure will be on Collingwood to come away with the win when they take on West Coast at Perth’s Optus Stadium.

West Coast will be aiming to erase the memories of last year’s elimination final heartbreak when they take on Collingwood at Optus Stadium.

The Magpies bucked the odds last year when they travelled to Perth and beat the Eagles by a single point to knock them out of the premiership race.

American Mason Cox was the hero that night, booting three early goals in a five-minute blitz to set up the win.

The 211cm forward has been dropped for Friday night’s re-match after going goalless from ten disposals in last week’s shock loss to GWS.

The Magpies will also be without star midfielder Taylor Adams, who will miss ten weeks with a knee injury.

West Coast were also dealt a series of blows, with stars Liam Ryan (shin) and Shannon Hurn (calf) among the players ruled out.

Collingwood’s backs are against the wall at 1-3, with the pressure intensifying on coach Nathan Buckley.

West Coast will start the match as hot favourites, but Eagles coach Adam Simpson is wary of Collingwood’s us-versus-the-world mentality.

“It’s going to be a great battle and they beat us five games ago, really,” Simpson said.

“I don’t think they’d be too worried about coming over here.”

West Coast (2-2) are also desperate to bounce back after coughing up a 33-point lead to St Kilda last week on the way to a 20-point loss.

The Eagles’ midfield copped a battering in the second half, with the absence of injured duo Luke Shuey (hamstring) and Elliot Yeo (osteitis pubis) proving telling.

Simpson said it was up to the club’s leaders to stand tall under pressure.

“We’ve been in a position to win every game, and we haven’t closed it out,” Simpson said.

“We’ve been a bit disappointed in the results. Lapses in concentration and consistency has cost us. But there has to be 15 clubs going through the same thing.

“So trying to etch out wins is critical at this time of the year. It doesn’t matter how you do it, we’re just looking for the win.”

Optus Stadium is back to full capacity after WA’s government eased the COVID-19 restrictions, meaning up to 60,000 fans can attend Friday’s match.

“We’re hoping for 55,000 Eagles supporters and 200 Collingwood supporters. Bring the noise,” Simpson said.

That was my thinking he doesn't do too bad under the circumstances. I think a higher team with good ball use could help him but thats it he does as well i think as anybody else out there, not a A grader but he can do his job and hes got a bit of swagger as well.

I think its because they are going to play Moore in attack. With Mihocek Moore and DeGoey, (& Cameron), they can't fit Cox in too. I think the Eagles are especially vulnerable if Crisp plays on Gaff, who hasn't handled the attention well, and Greenwood tags Kelly, they are left with nothing. The Eagles don't like the tough going most days. Yet occasionally they change and win contested ball. (As they did against (Port). A real case of two teams that no-one can gauge.

I actually think Mason has done ok. He's a light build for a FF though and gets shoved under the ball way too easily. However, for a yank new to the game, gotta admire how he has done. Maybe GC he might do ok?

is it just me or does anybody else think cox cops a pretty raw deal when it comes to judging collingwood, I know he has his weaknesses etc but if he was in a team that played him to his strengths and delivered the ball faster and better, that he could actually have more consistency to his game.?

Yes. Once a president is in place, Buckley will be given the option of a dignified exit. That said, a win tonight would be a significant turning point. Buckley seems to thrive on a back to wall situation. I just cannot see it happening without a major reset.

I think they have to sort out who's running the place first. I am convinced Buck's has to go.

Mason Cox is a particular favourite of mine. I am convinced he must be fed.

Not yet Brendon, would be too early even if it was an 80 point belting. I'd say he would jump first if so. If the board tapped him on the shoulder he would likely jump ship himself to save face as would likely get another gig at another club...maybe GWS next year?

Change is coming one way or another Brendon. You can't just do the same thing over and over and expect improvement.

Hey Pete, if Collingwood lose tonight by a significant margin (I hope they don't). Does Bucks get the chop?

I had assumed that the inclusion of Keane pointed to Moore being played at CHF. The poor stats for Moore can be put down to the zone defence - man on man is not a Collingwood system. Keane will be much better tonight than his first game. He was played too early and the Irishman had a lot of learning to do. Tonight he will be a better proposition. As for McGuane, he is the type we need on our coaching staff. He has always struck me as a good football brain who got the most out of his ability.

Hey Greg, I’ll try and summarise McGuane’s advice this week to Bucks. 1. Drop Cox…has lost 63% of his one on ones this season. Don’t accept it. 2. Put Moore into attack. Has conceded 34 marks and 42 uncontested possessions to his direct opponent this year, the worst of any key defender in the competition. He needs a reboot. 3. Get De Goey one out. Has had only 7 one on one contests this season, isolate and separate. 4. Mix up the rucks. Cameron given some ruck time. 5. Bring Mark Keane in to play defence (leaving Moore free to go forward) 6. Reinvent Callum Brown as a small defender where it suits his scrapping (and a point added by me – he can only kick 35 metres) 7. Switch Noble to a small forward role, drop Thomas. 8. Tag Tim Kelly (Greenwood) 9. Bolster the midfield. Get Tyler Brown into an inside mid role, let him grow there. 10. Move the veterans around. Throw Sidey and Pendles back at times for better ball use with composure. 11. Use Daicos elite skills. Put him back on the wing, accountable defence but knows when to push forward. 12. Let IQ use his speed, bring him higher up the ground in defence where he can run and carry and use his elite kicking. 13. Continue with Crisp in the midfield. Rarely beaten and defensively very accountable. Then McGuane offers Bucks the following advice in closing …”Bring back the boldness and vitality you played with to your coaching. Don’t die with the music in you. You will otherwise regret it.

Dropping Cox was dumb. Why not use him with Cameron? If some players are seen as slow, then it may not count if they are very close to their opponents or have ball sense. The Geelong game last year was the nail in the coffin for me for this game plan nonsense. Leigh Matthews was so positive and detailed in his planning at Brisbane. Three teams this century have come close to equalling our four in a row. Winning one game or losing one game can have a greater influence for the future. No matter who we play we support them.

What was his view, Pete? I've heard he has done well at a lower level. Wouldn't that be ironic if the Figjam story is true.

Did you see the Mick McGuane suggestions the other day for the Pies? I’d bring him in as coach. If stubborn Bucks followed his suggestions in tonights game, I’d give us a decent chance.
