AFL teams flee Queensland lockdown while the NRL pushes on

By Ed Jackson / Wire

With Queensland’s southeast plunged into a three-day COVID-19 lockdown, five AFL clubs have fled the state while the NRL will host a crowd-less tripleheader.

A snap COVID-19 lockdown for the state’s southeast caused havoc for several sporting codes.

Three AFL matches have been relocated while five clubs left Queensland on Saturday as the state government announced the three-day lockdown from 4 pm.

Saturday’s Gold Coast-Melbourne and Essendon-Sydney fixtures were postponed, while Sunday’s GWS-Port Adelaide contest was also affected.

The NRL was forced to postpone all three of its matches in Queensland on Saturday, with the games instead to be played back-to-back-to-back at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

In the AFL, the Suns will now take on the Demons at Marvel Stadium early on Sunday afternoon as part of a doubleheader, with the Giants to face the Power later at the same venue – while Essendon will host Sydney at the MCG.

All three games will be behind closed doors.

GWS, Sydney, Essendon – who had been operating out of temporary bases in Queensland – were set to fly out of the state on Saturday along with Gold Coast.

The Brisbane Lions had already departed on Saturday morning for Sunday’s game against Hawthorn in Tasmania.

In the NRL, with 15 of the competition’s 16 teams currently based in southeast Queensland, desperate attempts were made to hold Saturday’s three matches before they had to be rescheduled.

In a late breakthrough on Saturday, Queensland Health gave the competition the green light to resume on Sunday.

Under the changes, the blockbuster Penrith-Melbourne game will be at 4 pm with Newcastle-Canberra before it at 1:50 pm and St George Illawarra-South Sydney to follow at 6:25 pm.

The games originally scheduled for Sunday as a double-header at Suncorp Stadium were shifted to Monday.

The green light from authorities comes with strict conditions including daily testing for COVID-19 and compulsory masks for all players and officials not playing.

“Our games will be played under the toughest protocols since the competition resumed on May 28 last year,” NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said.

“These protocols further minimise the risk of community infection.”

The Super Netball competition is also impacted, having relocated entirely to south-east Queensland to complete its 2021 campaign after lockdowns in South Australia, Victoria and NSW.

In a statement, Netball Australia chief executive Kelly Ryan confirmed the competition would not relocate again and was hopeful of completing their season.

“Our teams have moved several times this year and we want to provide them with stability as the competition reaches the final rounds,” Ryan said.

“We feel we have flexibility in our fixture to make adjustments to play out the season.”

A revised fixture for the remaining matches of the Super Netball season will be released in due course.

Laughing at the concept of the Vic government phoning Vlandys to help out. NRL are even saying they might have their Grand Final at the MCG with 80,000 :-))))

I’m not joking though long Covid is an exceptionally serious sequelae of Covid and because of the ineptitude of the New South Wales government they’ve placed the entire country at riek

Simon, I'm an AFL and NRL fan. I even bought myself some Balmain Tigers shorts at Best and Less yesterday so I could do an impression of Reg Reagan for my brother and daughter this morning. When it comes to comparing the two codes I think the whole thing can get fairly tiresome because it is a false dichotomy. For starters, the NRL has an International team competing in its domestic comp, which has to be a drain on resources. But the AFL has been going into hubs sooner and more safely the entire time regardless of the cost, whereas, the NRL keeps insisting on playing games during outbreaks in hotspots. Not only can you not compare the two financially, each has a very different set of governments to deal with. The NRL has New Zealand say keep out, but this year they haven't had the same issues with Victoria and they've been supported by the QLD government throughout. Conversely, the AFL frequently needs to remain agile with governments from the NT, WA, SA and Tassie going into snap lockdowns and border closures. I think what we have here is a situation where the AFL is dealing with 6 state and 2 territory governments to keep their season going without placing undue risk on the clubs or communities, whereas, the NRL has just proceeded through outbreak after outbreak in order to preserve a tiny surplus. Both competitions have different circumstances, but the elephant in the room is that NSW has been lax and permissive in allowing games to go ahead as long as they have and now Sydney is in an ever-spiralling hell of pandemic that its government has failed to contain and the NRL has been operating in this environment all along. I am fairly disgusted with the QLD government proceeding with this weekend's NRL fixtures because I live here and the AFL had the decency to cancel and clear out. In fact, ALL sports in South East Queensland have been cancelled EXCEPT the NRL, which is the kind of entitlement that got Sydney into the mess it is in and now Brisbane is being dragged into it. But I maintain that comparisons here can't be made objectively because of the wildly different circumstances each code is working in. We are watching an Olympic Games with no crowds being conducted in a fashion that neither the NRL nor AFL would ever sanction, so clearly both are trying to act responsibly. What it comes down to in the end is that the AFL can have their Grand Final in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth or Brisbane, but the NRL's options are diminishing daily. In a plus for the NRL, they've scheduled several bush games so that games can have crowds. But I have a sinking feeling that Brisbane will lockdown for longer than 3 days and that if things worsen to Sydney levels the NRL season will be in dire straits.

No even close to an endemic. Endemic means belonging to a particular people or country. This is global and affects people of all races, ages, nationalities, creeds, colour and religions; therefore, it is a pandemic.

Your misrepresenting my point of view. I know how deadly this virus is it’s more an endemic than a pandemic. I’m not laughing at the misery it’s created in our society & community! I’m having a giggle at the NRL lack of ovals to play the game thus the NZ Avenue! Gee man lighten up!

Covid has hit lots of sections of our community including sport at all levels. It is a deadly disease with much suffering and a 2% chance of dying from it if you aren't vaccinated. I don't think it is anything to Joke about or point the finger over. Shame on you!

" If it’s not in Queensland or New South Wales rugby league don’t really have anywhere to go. That and they can’t shut the league down because they’re still in debt" Point 1 - Correction: The Victorian Government rang Peter V'landys yesterday to see if they could help so not really a case of nowhere else to go. I am also pretty certain that WA & Tasmania would also have offered help if they were asked. Instead the NRL did the sensible thing and talked to the Queensland government to see what could be done instead of just pressing the PANIC button and flying everyone out. Point 2 - Correction: Instead of making a loss last year as the AFL did, the NRL actually made a small profit of $3 million and that was despite having its Origin money spinner pushed into this financial year. Whilst costs from shifting everyone upto Queensland will hit them harder this year, they will have the income from two Origins plus $50m of savings from their head office budgets. In addition, the NRL still has a loan facility with the banks that it has not touched. Before attacking another code, I suggest you check your facts.

Yes the AFL is very happy that they’re a national competition, because even with the conflagration of the last year on their finances they can still outspend the NRL by a massive amount. If it’s not in Queensland or New South Wales rugby league don’t really have anywhere to go. That and they can’t shut the league down because they’re still in debt
