Eels to consider locking out general public for marquee fixtures in 2022

By Adam Bagnall / Roar Guru

The Parramatta Eels could make the stunning move to lock out the general public for two blockbuster home games in 2022.

In what could become widespread across the NRL in the future, the Easter Monday clash with the Wests Tigers and Round 20 match against the Penrith Panthers could be member-exclusive games, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The Eels’ membership numbers have surged in recent seasons despite their premiership drought sitting at 35 years and counting, and they now boast the most members of all 16 teams.

Locking out the general public to allow their members to attend would be a first for the NRL and could lead to other teams following suit in a bid to encourage membership take up among diehard fans.

I’ve been a Dragons Red V member for 13 consecutive seasons and love attending home games and member-only events, such as the recent open training session held at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, and I think member-only games is a great idea.

If you want to attend home games for your team, you need a membership. I think it’s a very good strategy and would benefit teams with smaller membership numbers, filling their coffers and making club membership the norm among rugby league fans.

There would, of course, be those against being forced to fork out their hard-earned to pay for a membership, especially families who may need to buy four or five memberships, or fans who can only get to one or two games a year.

What do you think: are member-only games the way of the future, and would they entice you to become a member of your team?

Well they can’t expand the capacity for that game, can they ?

If there’s no seats left. That means that teams supporters & those who may turn up at the gate for those particular games are locked out. No matter how you try to word it…

That you really never go to see at Parramatta. You’d probably only ever see them play in Queensland? If there’s a huge Parramatta following in Queensland like you, that are members. That ground at Parramatta is never going to be filled by Parramatta Members…

How did you arrive at that figure ? However, yes there are a huge number of ex pat Eels fans living in Qld. It's the reason that we are one of the 3 teams that the Broncos & Titans always want to play at home, it guarantees a bumper crowd for them. And no, I'm not wasting my money, I'm supporting my footy club.

So a quarter , half of Parramatta members could be like you? Living somewhere else. Makes the whole idea sound ridiculous. Sounds like you are just wasting your money to me.

Brandy . Born , raised & all of his real football, through Penrith junior teams & rep teams. Good young footballers are just sent to play at better footballing high schools of the time. One of those used to be Fairfield. Now it isn’t . More of them go to Patrician Brothers Blacktown. In Penrith’s area. Mitch Moses went to Holy Cross Ryde. Parramatta still had to get him from Wests. In juniors & again as a first grader. By the way. At this point , he still hasn’t won shite! After this year. Due to salary cap restrictions. Parramatta’s window, like Penrith’s . Is shutting! You just called it rambling nonsense, as it’s true. Pretty sad that since 1947 , not one local Parramatta junior halfback. Has helped Parramatta win a premiership. Can add to that. Lots of the players now at the club. Also from Penrith & elsewhere. Sad. :unhappy: Can’t even take a bit of ribbing Eel Brett? :stoked:

You're clearly not understanding how this works. The club gets the draw. The club then offers 2021 members to either continue with their existing membership or take another one. Non 2021 members then get their opportunity to buy a membership. The club offers all manner of membership packages from non ticketed all the way to full season. Prospective members can ask for 1 game, 2 game, 3 game packages etc. Those prospective members can then ask for which games they want included in their package. The vast majority of members have asked for Easter Monday against the Tigers and round 20 against the Panthers to be included in their package, if it isn't a full season package. Many interstate members just come to Sydney for the Easter Monday game, they also go to the Royal Easter Show while they're here. Family holiday, yay. So, the number of membership package requests that include Easter Monday & round 20 has exceeded the capacity of CommBank Stadium. The club has all but sold out those membership packages already. Now, some of those members may not come to the game anyway, but they have the option to sell their ticket back to the club, which the club can then resell to the general public. Make sense now ?

I'm sure every team has fickle fans, the Eels are no different, but if the club is even considering this then you can bet the demand for tickets for those two games is high.

Won't be a problem for those two games

Your alternative is to become a Knights member. I don't know how flexible their membership packages are, but if there is a particular game you want to go to I'm sure you can get some kind of one game membership. In any event, the Knights don't sell out very often so I doubt they'll turn you away.

When I said no one is getting locked, what I meant is that demand by Eels members for tickets to those two particular games is exceeding capacity. Opposition fans aren't being locked out, there just won't be any seats left. This is what everyone is missing, these two games are the two most in demand this season for Eels fans & members. If every game is sold out to members, then how is that a bad thing ?

What the hell was that rambling nonsense ? I never said anything about halfbacks. But since you brought it up, Mitch Moses was actually an Eels junior till he was 15, and he only went to the Tigers because of his family connections. Brandy may have been born in Penrith, but he had to come to Eels territory to learn how to play the game at Fairfield Pats.

Doesn’t mean that they want Parramatta supporters at Penrith. Just on another note. Parramatta has never produced a local halfback that has been with the club, to Win Parramatta a Premiership. The only halfback to Win A Premiership for Parramatta, is Peter Stirling. He came from the country. Where as Penrith have produced 3 local Halfbacks , to win 1 less premiership. As Cleary’s been at the club since he was 13. That’s close enough to being a local . Closer than Parramatta has ever been, Yes, I know Peter Stirling won 4 Premierships at Parramatta. Even a Premiership Win for Parramatta this season, would be with a West’s halfback. That doesn’t say much for halfbacks that come out of Parramatta!

I have one for you. What if half of the People who are Parramatta supporters, are those living in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania now? Or even now living in distant NSW country & coastal places. Then Parramatta would never actually be able to fill their own stadium with Parramatta members. Those Member only games , may then have the smallest home crowds at Parramatta , for the whole season,

Parramatta will look pretty stupid , if they put up the ‘Sold Out’ , members only signs up. Then only a quarter of the expected members actually turn up. Do they then try & drag people in off of the street , to put bum’s on seats ?

Obviously they are being locked out. If it’s only members of that club that can get in. For any set number of games. If that works for Parramatta. What’s stopping them from doing the same thing for a lot more, or all of their home games in the future? Ditto for other clubs.

Obviously you don’t know those fans who are pretty fickle. They’ll support the team who’s winning, or near the top. Then they’ll support their second favourite, if they’re near the top. There’s plenty of them around.
