Shane Warne personified the definition of Australian

By Trevine / Roar Pro

If anyone personified the definition of an Australian, it is without doubt the inimitable Shane Warne.

Brash, out of the box and in your face on the field, and an outrageous extrovert off it, without a care in the world, he epitomised the rare character of a man who enjoyed life to the fullest and always on his terms.

He possessed a rare tenacity and was fiercely passionate when he donned the Australian cap.

In fact many batsmen in the opposition will readily testify how he would get into their heads with intimidation and any other means to get them out.

But all of that takes nothing away from the rare skill he possessed as a leggie as history will recall, producing some of the most astounding deliveries that will be etched in history.

Shane Warne strode the playing fields like a colossus, proving his mettle on the field then stepping in as a mentor off it.

He was never out of reach of an aspiring young spinner needing his expert direction.

That is how he gained and maintained his respect from anyone who played the game.

Outside of cricket, he lived in the fast lane, enjoying life to the fullest.

But none of his off-field antics have any relevance to what a wonderful cricketer he was and how much he gave to cricket and those in need as the Sri Lankans would readily attest to.

Warne’s memory will remain in history for revolutionising the art of leg spin.

His impact on the game was openly evident judging by the outpouring of shock and grief from around the globe.

Shane Warne leaves this world with lasting memories of a loveable Australian larrikin, and more importantly, a legend of the game of cricket.

If only there was still a Politburo. At least back then - at least post-Stalin - the Soviet leader served at the pleasure of a wide group of people. Even Gorbachev did when he was implementing his "P" and "G". He still had to navigate internal politics. Now, it's just Pukin' as sole Czar - nothing beneath him (or around him) to curb his deranged zealotness. Perhaps he is indeed suffering from Parkinson's as has been speculated for some years - single-minded, somewhat paranoid, loss of filters.

Nah, all's good, l replied like a scheissenkopf anyways. But no malice intended for you. I enjoy your posts .... for a Leo    . I have Mercury conjunct Uranus in Leo so I can be a bit bombastic and like poke fun at stuff. -------- And l agree with you on WWIII. I believe we're on that journey now. I grieve for those people killed, injured and displaced just for the vanity of one man who places more importance on his dress sense and less on a human life. ------- And Mein Trumpf authored fake news by claiming Obama was not American born. -------- America has Pluto at the same degree in the sky as it was in 1776. Pluto is the God of major change, explosive change, death and renewal. America will have its biggest changes. Personally we can have returns for the Sun, the Moon and all planets out to Uranus. Neptune and Pluto take too long to cycle but they indicate generations better than the commonly accepted groupings like Baby Boomer, etc. Strange stuff happens to people, for example, when Uranus makes it return after 84 years.

OK fair enough. I have no desire to get in to an escalating engagement with you. Perhaps I'm being over-sensitive; The Russia-Ukraine war is playing heavily on my mind and causing internal tension. I fear we are already in WWIII but only history and perspective will recognise that it started 2 weeks ago. A nuclear exchange within 12 months is all but assured in my mind. Thank Trump and his mastering of "fake news" over 6 years which has emboldened the world's (other) psychopaths to employ his tactics and simply "act and deny".

Really? Im Australian and don't aspire to, or possess any Warne like traits. This is a tired old stereotype of what it is to be an Aussie male apparently? We derive an unhealthy identity through our sporting exploits while its so called legendary personalities are disproportionately revered across our society in my opinion.

My thoughts on the matter was Warnie was a team guy mostly. DB wasn't. I would even like him to be awarded the Order of Australia posthumously.

It is hard to compare players from different eras. I’d imagine that cricket would have largely been amateur in Bradman’s day and of course they didn’t play anywhere near as much cricket. I remember talking to a young lady nearly two decades ago who wasn’t impressed with Warne because of some of his off field shenanigans, she was surprised when I told her that he was Australia’s best cricketer after Bradman — many people didn’t understand that. I don’t think it matters who was better, they were a long way ahead of anybody else. It is a pity that the media focus on the private lives of celebrities in the modern age, surely it is nobody’s business apart from the individuals involved.

No problem with that. It's our own award and l did refer to it above. Warne is the greatest cricketer; ever. Greater than Bradman, only Sobers comes near. Warnie is a team legend. All three are matchwinners.

I remember Bradman’s record as being 6,996 runs from 70 completed innings, a 4 in his final innings instead of a duck would have given him an average of 100. I trust that you support Warne being given an order of Australia, which would make him Shane Warne, AO.

Nobody was suggesting a British knighthood. My original post recommended the Australian equivalent. There is no need for this to be an unpleasant discussion.

It is the AO, or Order of Australia. That is what I was suggesting.

We, as Aussies, don't give knighthoods out anymore. We've got our own more egalitarian award

Well I was replying that we’re Australian, Aussies eschew this stuff, and we don’t do that anymore. The Sir Aussie, who appeared on that list with that appellation, was when we did do the fetlock thing. ——- I reread my post and I fail to see how l implied it was the poster’s assessment. And you could’ve deduced, by the same token, that l know my stuff. Anyone whose been around cricket knows that like they know 99.94.

The failure to recognise Warne with the honours he has earned reflects badly on us all. He was more than a brilliant cricketer and lovable ratbag.
