James Maloney reportedly tests positive for banned substance in France

Former NRL star James Maloney has tested positive for a banned recreational substance, according to reports from France.

French newspaper L’Independent write that the 35-year old, who played 249 NRL games for five different teams before leaving the competition at the end of 2019, failed a test after a match on March 19.

Maloney has reportedly been suspended following the positive test, with the case yet to be further investigated by the French Anti-Doping Agency.

The former Kangaroos halfback has been based in France for the last three years after moving to play for the Catalans Dragons in 2020.

He featured in the Super League for two seasons before retiring after leading the Dragons to the Grand Final in 2021, choosing to stay in France and finish his career in the domestic Elite 1 competition with Lezignan XIII.
