Should Henry Arundell start the second Test?

By Peter Darrow / Roar Guru

Like a lighthouse in a storm, Henry Arundell’s arrival on the international scene was like a piercing light in the gloom of a Test defeat for England on Saturday.

With his first touch of the ball to score a brilliant solo try, he confirmed all the excitement emanating from him. Could he transfer his club and age group form onto the big stage?

Well, yes, he could and it is such a relief to see an attacking player who backs himself to score sublime individual tries. Many players have it drummed into them that they should look for their support when making a break. Arundell has the speed, ability and confidence to make the decision to go it alone and score himself.

You had the feeling that when he scored his magnificent try for London Irish against Toulon, he knew from the time he received a pressure pass on his own try line, he was going to score at the other end of the field.

Oh, to have the skill and belief to do that. “Ain’t many players in the world who would have done that, could have done that,” were the excited commentators’ words.

Sports opinion delivered daily

The Toulon try introduced Henry Arundell to the rugby world and straight away there was pressure on Eddie Jones to include him in the England squad to tour Australia.

Arundell is qualified to play for England, Scotland, Wales and Cyprus, the place of his birth in 2002. Jones named him as an “apprentice player” to Australia, which was probably a good move to relieve the pressure on Arundell to succeed.

There has been many a young player who for various reasons went from being a shining star to an inferior version of themselves. Once a player’s weaknesses are unearthed and defences become more aware of the threat they pose, they often find it difficult to continue their sparkling introductory form.

So far, Arundell, despite being more familiar now to the opposition, appears to have gone to another level, when he could have travelled down a familiar path.

Even after scoring “the try” at Toulon he brought back memories of old when try scorers had serious expressions and any emotion was outlawed! Hopefully success, attention, praise, celebrity status, money and ego will not affect him.

The first sign will be if he changes the colour or style of his hair!

“He has got a good sense of humour, he is deliberate in terms of how he goes about his conversations, I want to improve this, I want to work on that, how do I do this.

“He is very attentive to all his detail and is very deliberate with his work,” explained London Irish coach Les Kiss when asked by RugbyPass.

Henry Arundell, not like his namesake, Henry Arundell, 8th Baron Arundell of Wardour, has always been a rugby player with great potential, since he attended Harrow School and was part of the London Irish Academy since 14 years old.

Patrick O’Grady first saw Arundell in action as a 14-year-old, freshly inducted into London Irish’s Academy.

“You see those long-range tries now, but he would do very similar things on the field from a very young age,” O’Grady told BBC Sport.

After making his Premiership Rugby Cup debut against Saracens he was named as their Young Player of the Season for 2021-22.

Arundell was described as “one to watch” in the 2022 Six Nations Under 20s Championship, where he was the joint top scorer. He scored a familiar length-of-the-field try against Scotland.

He also gained attention playing for London Irish, when the “Exiles” were down in a match by 25 points, with a 20-minute man of the match performance by Arundell, they clawed back to a 42-all draw.

His highlight reel showcases further superb club performances, including two magical chip and chase tries against both Leicester and Wasps. It was as though he knew instinctively which way the balls would bounce for him to retrieve.

If you have not yet had the pleasure to see Henry Arundell’s try against Toulon, here it is.

He appears to start off slow before he gets those massive thighs moving to propel him away from defenders with brilliant in and outs, speed and swerve to score a memorable try.

If I were Eddie Jones, would I start with Henry Arundell? As an “apprentice” do you still ease him into the team? Does he get managed or do you just cut him loose?

If England lose the second Test, then the series is gone, so why not just throw everything at Australia with Arundell starting?

A difficult choice, Eddie, but over to you now. This is why you get paid the big bucks!

Henry Arundell plays rugby the way it should be played and I wish him well.

His running, pace and swerve reminds me a bit of Danie Gerber. What do you think ?

You're right, it is great for rugby. Even if you support another team it is good to appreciate someone from the opposition.

That specific try? Will Jordan yes, Caleb Clarke yes. Other guys that could probably wouldn't make ABs: Salesi Rayasi, Timoci Tavatavanawai (uncapped for anyone but probs a Fijian player soon enough), maybe Koroi too. Was an awesome try, but I haven't seen enough of him to have an opinion on whether he would replace Jordan / Reece / Fainga'anuku in the ABs. There are tries Fainga'anuku has scored that Arundell wouldn't have, where he smashes through / over people, so that game goes both ways I guess. But anyway I think he is an awesome talent, great for rugby to have another excitement machine in the mix. He reminds me a bit of Jason Robinson with the running style and the change of direction.

I just realised, are you talking about the Wallaby test try? Maybe you haven't even seen the Toulon try Prince? You didn't answer my question about who the "legends" are too?

That was a nice Try there Arundell. That was a pretty poor kick chase and broken defensive line Toulon!

While Jones has been very sensible in his pronouncements about Arundell, it's probably worth looking at how his club have managed the player. He's only started 2 Prem games, ever, come off the bench a few more. He's played a few second level domestic cup games. That's really it. We know what he can do - and England have form for not doing well with flair players. What needs careful managing is expectations and the gaining of experience. England's new FB might only be 21 but had played over 20 Prem games before a soft try out vs Canada and US and had played nearly 30 Prem games before facing serious opposition in internationals. So with Tommy Freeman in the squad - a man who actually came out of the BaaBaas game with credit - perhaps playing him would be a good idea. Whilst only 21, he is an experienced player at Saints with Euro Cup games under his belt as well as nearly 30 Prem games. Has played FB and wing. and is also seriously quick. So if England want to make the most of Arundell - it may be that less is more and the bench would be best. I for one, really don't want to see him wasted by being asked to too much too soon - when he's barely played 230 mins of prem rugby....ever...

If J.Barrett or Reece are legends what does that say for the rest of the players?

Totally agree with you ozziedude. I want to see this guy succeed as a rugby fan not be anti him as an opposition fan.

I hope Eddie starts him, as a fan I want to see excitement and new blood, plus what does Eddie have to lose given his gd form in the Prem? At least he’ll find out about the guy. He’s 19 but so was Horan, Little, Roff, Tune, Jeff Wilson, Lomu, Cipriani, Jonny Wilko was 18. Due to professionalism he’s got the physical goods at a young age too. Throw him in Eddie!!!

The kid is fast , a potential FB . Like to see him after a couple contact situations, dragged into a couple of mauls n rucks, get that clean white shorts nice n dirty n then run 90 m through the entire Wallaby team at the 82 min mark n dot done a 5 pointer….. then talk to me…..but the kid has potential , no doubt.

You may well be right, but in my eyes I see a player with enormous potential who could become a fantastic player. Pure and simple. Who are the current All Blacks I mentioned who are "legends"?

But I doubt if there is anyone capable of doing that, maybe Will Jordan on a good day?

Every player has their highlights posted on youtube... you are just getting carried away with a try where two fatigued wallabies accidentally tackled each other instead of him really... and he ran around a flat footed JOC... thats good....but lets not get carried away and embarrass ourselves by making statements like he is better than some current all blacks one or two of which are absolute legends. Let's start with seeing him make the England starting line up which looks fairly unlikely considering the players they have. Perhaps he will emerge in next years 6 nations which will let us see all we need to know about whether he is the real deal.
