What can we expect from the Joeys' jump to Jakarta?

By TheSecretScout / Roar Guru

Over 30 of Australia’s best young players are in a week-long training camp in Canberra, in preparation for the AFF U-16 Youth Championship in August, which is held in Jakarta

This is the second camp in 2022 that has been held under the watchful eyes of Trevor Morgan and Tony Vidmar – with a final 23-man squad to be selected next week for the upcoming tournament

Australia has won the AFF U-16 Youth Championship in 2008 and 2016, as well as finishing second in 2012, and third in 2013, 2015, and 2017.

They will need to finish first in Group C, or as the best overall runner up in the three groups, to advance to the semi-finals of the competition.

One of the most eye-catching things about this squad, is how eastern states heavy it is with the players chosen.

There is shockingly only 1 player selected from South Australia, a state many within the game – believe to be the best at producing youth in the last half decade,

Of the players in this camp, several have connections to greats of yesteryear as well some who have potential to become household names in the A League as well as play in Europe in the next few seasons.

Luka Coveny is the son of legendary NSL, A-League and all whites striker, Vaughn; who is the under 21s manager at Western United. – Luka however, is not a striker like his famous father was – he is a defender.

Nicholas Zdrillic is the son of former Australian marksman, David who has gone on to become a successful coach; currently as the assistant at Serie A club Genoa

Meanwhile Fabian Talladira is the son of Adelaide City great Carlo and shares the same tenacity.

Three A-League sides who are heavily maligned when it comes to lack of youth production – Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory & the Western Sydney Wanderers have some interesting selections

The Middleton twins from Sydney – Jared & Lachlan are a defender and midfielder that the club are particularly proud of and expected to have a great future in the sport.

Melbourne Victory also has their own twin brother selection, Jesse & Jordan Hoey – whose pace, and ability should see them have a long career.

Sports opinion delivered daily

While All eyes might be on the Wanderers highly regarded Max Hately, but it is under rated team mate – Ayman Gualsi who has the technical skills and vision to become a success

The group phase kicks off on Tuesday, 2 August against Myanmar followed three days apart by matches against Cambodia & then Malaysia

Peter ANTONIOU – Melbourne City FC
Daniel BENNIE – Perth Glory FC
Dean BOSNJAK – Western Sydney Wanderers FC

Looking forward to watching Jaylan Pearman at this level. A highly skilled midfielder who is dominating at U/18's in Perth.

isiah quinn is a player i've spoken about on here a couple time before, this is the second camp he's been in this year for the joeys and looks likely to go to the tournament. hes quite skinny/rangy and doesnt look like a footballer, but hes got good endurance and can operate defensively or offensively - once he fills out his body more (as he grows older) he should have a bright future also the second camp this year for his team mate cyrus malsawmkima - pace and trickery in abundance, but needs to work on consistency to be able to turn professional alex nunes is a defender with good vision who the jets have high hopes for. glory have some interesting representation as well daniel bennie has great technical abillity, in particular ball control when running at pace jaylan pearman is a midfielder that the glory rate as one of the best in thier whole academy setup - he is playing 2 age groups older than his own andriano lebib played a lot of sport, he was big into athletics - but chose to concentrate football

i'd expect to see a bit more rotation through the engine room this upcoming year. Juande is starting to struggle with his body - was nursed through a lot of last year and is on a different pre season training program compared to the squad (not unusual given the age of the player) isiais will be rested on longer road trips (2-3 games interstate in a week) which means using the younger midfield options. d'arrigo has to impress whenever he gets the chance to now, there was significant a league interest in the player this off season (most noteably perth) konsta will get minutes, while yull is no longer a boy and ready to play professional football im not entirely sold on alagich at the professional level, great kid who trains hard and does have leadership qualities - but still some issues in his game besides that, its very slim pickings in south australian when it comes to central midfield (as well as centreback)- there is nobody outstanding IMO coming through the 10-14 year old bracket in adelaide fucntional players, yes - but not outstanding

He's putting up some good numbers. Bit of a glut in young midfielders D'Arrigo, Yull and Alagich sitting behind Juande and Isiais.

Any names to look after? (Assuming if there will be a stream available to watch these games) Is this 2005/2006 born players? They make me feel quite old!

he's neat and tidy on the ball with a good passing range and has taken part in several games this season, now that hes finally broken into the squad. Not too sure how many more times he'll feature as united are battling for a top 6 spot with only a few games to go. a player to watch for next season at NPL level though , (as he wont be joining up with the senior a league side yet)

My biggest problem with these tournaments is our completely bonkers and crazed coaches. Is there some reason with these tournaments that the games are so few days apart in this case its a luxury to have games 3 days apart. At the one extreme you have the bloke here who argues that more than 10 minutes a week game time for a youth in the A-league is going to cause them harm. Well every youth team involving Australian players seems to have the same pattern of idiocy. The same players usually have to play every 2 or 3 days while the rest of the squad doesn;t get picked with a few that are used as subs. With the selection of kids how many favours have been done here in the squad, like when Arnold gave Slater's son a three year A-league contract . The only reason Adelaide is at the forefront of Australian youth despite only having 5% of the population its clear the wealthier states have sold every NPL position to the highest bidder and who knows what they do at the representative level. That leaves Adelaide as the place where talented youth can actually can get a game. Our major problem developing youth these days is clearly self inflicted and caused by the NPl clubs.

Talladira seems to be in good form with AU in the NPL. What kind of midfielder is he ?

Thanks Andy - a good summary of the team and you won't get this information in other media outlets. We do follow an amazing code with so many meaningful competitions. Is there any way to view these games?
