South Sydney's race to the finals: Can Bunnies avenge 2021 heartbreak?

By Rosie Faddoul / Roar Rookie

On the back of an up-and-down season, the Rabbitohs are playing to cement a fifth-place finish against the Sydney Roosters in the opening of the new Allianz Stadium.

Both teams have been in deadly form coming into the back end of the season. Additionally, both teams are coming off their respective wins.

The Rabbitohs-Cowboys clash was nothing less than phenomenal. Souths’ forwards made the difference in the 20-10 win. Keaon Koloamatangi and skipper Cameron Murray (to name a couple) displayed a gutsy 80-minute effort.

Cam Murray did an excellent job around the ruck for a large part of the game and did a significant amount of Souths’ dirty work, totalling 37 tackles for the match. The effort from the Rabbitohs skipper resulted in powerful running forwards through the middle, which opened up defensive lapses in the Cowboys line.

Keaon’s try displayed that perfectly; his allusive footwork and sheer size put him over for the Rabbits’ first try.

The Roosters took down the Melbourne Storm in a highly intense and physical clash packed with hard-hitting defence and scintillating attack. Easts’ 18-14 win was their seventh win in a row against the determined Storm.

The Roosters’ powerful defence was enough to keep the emotions high and the clash their way. Consistent captain James Tedesco kept his team underway even in the dying minutes of the game and did his part in keeping the Roosters firing as did his powering forwards.

The Latrell Mitchell effect

The Rabbitohs, led by dynamic fullback Latrell Mitchell, have much to play for in strengthening the statement made against the Cowboys in a mouth-watering clash against their old rivals. Maintaining their current form is of the utmost importance. Starting with intensity from the first minutes of the game lays the platform that it takes to win.

A consistent 80-minute effort from the Rabbitohs forwards as displayed in the past few weeks will highlight star players such as Latrell Mitchell and bring fatigue into the Roosters line.

Mitchell’s effect has not gone unnoticed. His versatile skillset brings elements of speed and depth into South Sydney’s attack, and his game awareness is unlike any other player in this competition. This season will hopefully be Latrell’s first final series in Rabbitohs colours since joining the club in 2020.

The fullback’s influence will be amplified even more so during finals, which may be a dangerous sign for opposition teams.

Consistency is key: the growth of Lachlan Ilias’s combination with Cody Walker

The pairing of young halfback Lachlan Ilias and veteran Cody Walker has developed strongly throughout the season.

Ilias’s game is getting better week-in and week-out. His reads of the general play against the Cowboys tested them multiple times throughout the game. Lachlan’s early kicks and attempts to isolate Scott Drinkwater on the Cowboys’ line put immense pressure on their kick returns.

Additionally, Walker has unmatched versatility, both with his passing and kicking game. As he is finding incredible end-of-season form, his involvement is ever-increasing, providing his striking outside backs with a multitude of try-scoring opportunities.

With finals on the Bunnies’ horizon, their ever-improving halves combination will be looking to be sparking in both offence and defence.

If the Rabbitohs play with an intense and powerful start off the back of strong forwards and fuelling passion against the long-time rivals, they will lay the platform for a dynamic finals series in the hopes of redeeming 2021 heartache.

South’s couldn’t defeat a Panthers half a NSW Cup team , at home. After Mitchell said they were coming to get everyone. I can’t see where all this South’s overconfidence stuff is coming from?

Certainly, it is really unfortunate but hopefully, he will be fit and firing come finals time.

Campbell Graham was knocked out how false the media implication he was acting. He's not playing this week because of that blow to his head. Will miss his defence.

Dangerous for opposition teams. By that, I mean I personally wouldn’t want to go up against a firing Latrell Mitchell and co.

Avenge against your own heart. Sounds dangerous.

Down the ladder makes no difference, the game will be in Sydney at either Commbank, Allianz, or Accor. I think they would rather play Parramatta then Canberra.

I understand that, but Roosters v Rabbitohs is more than just a game of league. Plus for the opening of the new Allianz Stadium, "resting the whole team" would hand the Roosters the win. Of course, I have faith in our depth, but our season is still technically not done yet. Where Penrith stay first whether they win or lose, Souths can still move down the ladder, technically.

You realise, Rosie, that finishing 5th means likely playing a red hot Canberra who often give Souths trouble. If Parramatta lose, you would get to play them on a losing run, would just need to go down to the Roosters, and you know how good South's record is against Parramatta. So if Parra go down, Souths will need to think carefully what they do at the new stadium on Friday. I would even go as far as saying if Parra lose, they should probably rest the whole team from the Roosters game, ready for Parra the next week.

I understand that fully, hopefully they can find some might against those heavy-weight teams. With that being said they have the ability to perform, it is a matter of consistently performing at the moment.

Considering where they were a couple of months ago I’m feeling optimistic. For me if they play the Raiders their chances are really good, if it’s the Eels pretty good and if it’s the Roosters then not so good but I still can’t see them beating the Panthers unfortunately.

I agree, Souths need to maintain their form and keep a strong mindset and they are capable of great success in this finals series.

Thank you! I should have kept that in mind there is a small certainty that Souths can end up fifth. However, I'm hoping for a South Sydney win against the Roosters.

I understand that view, I have spoken to others about that exact topic. However, Lachlan is still quite young and still has many years to grow ahead of him.

Souths have got the firepower and confidence to take it all the way, The fact that they are underdogs and probably will be all the way to the GF (if they make it) will work in their favour, If Storm beat Eels, and Souths beat the chooks, then a 5 v 8 home final puts them in good stead for the rest of the finals.

Good piece of analysis - thanks Rosie. "the Rabbitohs are playing to cement a fifth-place finish". Well, that does depend quite a bit on what happens between Parra and Melbourne. If Parra win, Souths can't finish higher than sixth, barring two blowouts.

Illias is not nrl standard unfortunately. They will regret the decision to keep him in the top grade.
