Penney drops as Razor replacement: Former Tahs coach back in Super Rugby ranks

By The Roar / Editor

Rob Penney, sacked by the Waratahs midway through the 2021 season after five straight losses, will return to Super Rugby as a replacement for the competition’s most successful coach.

Penney returns to his roots in Canterbury and will take over from All Blacks bound Scott Robertson after this campaign.

Under Penney, NSW won just five of 19 matches (26 per cent) and he was let go after five straight losses in 2021.

“I’m excited and honoured to have been selected to lead the coaching group at the Crusaders from 2024 onwards,” Penney said in a statement on Tuesday.

He coached the NSW Waratahs from 2019 through to 2021 during a tumultuous time for the club and is currently head coach for the Japan U20 side who will play at the World Cup in South Africa in June.

“The Crusaders franchise has a strong history and record of success and excellence, both in on-field performance and off-field culture, and I’m excited to immerse myself into the environment,” Penney said.

Penney played more than 100 games for Canterbury before retiring in 1994.

He was assistant coach with the Crusaders in 2005 when they won the Super Rugby title and went on to lead Canterbury to four ITM Cup titles in a row between 2008-2011 – with Scott Robertson as one of his assistants.

He was head coach of the New Zealand U20 side in 2012 before taking over as head coach at prestigious Irish club Munster where he led the side to the semi-finals of the European Cup in 2013/2014. He left Ireland in 2014 to take up a three-year deal with the NTT Shining Arcs in Japan.

“While I’m excited to get started, my focus for now remains firmly with the Japan U20 side. I’ve loved watching the Crusaders this season and will be tuning in to watch the boys as they chase the title once again,” Penney said.

Grant Jarrold, Crusaders Board Chairman, said Penney stood out from other candidates for his experience, his maturity, and his back-to-back success record.

“Rob impressed us with his leadership qualities, his experience, and his proven ability to innovate on and off the field,” Jarrold said.

“Our existing coaching group is experienced and has an intricate understanding of the Crusaders way. As a board, we are excited about Rob’s ability to add to this group and guide both our coaches and our playing group to success.”

Rob Penney will join the Crusaders from 1 August.

most of the Aussies i associate with in Aussie are more harsher critics of rugby Australia than me and that's because they can see for themselves they have the oi oi oi blinkers off and they want get back to the glory days when we would watch tests together and you wouldn't know who was going to win and we'd be waiting impatiently for weeks for the games to come around, There was nothing like it. We all want that feeling again.

As I said your knowledge of the Aotearoa game is limited, as there are moves in place to address many known problems. Mind you your assumptions are pretty so so, but not having that experience, from within shows. I'm pretty sure your advisory capacity, if it was aloud to happen, would create a few chuckles though.

Then again JD Tana did coach internationally, before he was the Blues coach. Prior to that Blues engagement, he coached an international 12's Barbarians like team, in 12's before the HK 7's tournament started, back then. A tournament he actually won.

Why would I want to study Welch rugby???? ffs have you ever been involved with the admin side of the game, as I, in the past?? If not, can I suggest you do, as you just might learn something.

You should look at Gats history of where he coached and when he left NZ as a player. Yes there are alot of players and coaches from NZ in Europe but less and less of them in the top jobs and top players. NZ is losing players who know they aren't going to be ABs or players who aren't professional like NPC. Coaches are now going the same way. While it's great that 3 SRP coaches are going to the ABs it has to be a worry that coaches are being brought in from OS just like players to cover injuries are being brought in from the ProD2 not promoted from the NPC. How many of the last 10 NZ coaches that won SR or NPC are currently in head roles? How many of those are in NZ? How many of them are test coaches who will be at the WC. Of the AB coaching team (or the one before that) came through NPC and SR as head coaches compared to 15 years ago. NZ is not hard to use understand, 10 years ago there were alot of NZ and SR coaches at head roles in the URC, Prem and T14, today there are very few which says the coaching IQ is not what it was and NZR need to address it and fix the problem. No shame is spotting a bad trend and try fix it.

So unions control their players and staff and don't have to do as told by NZR around player rest, getting sign off on overseas players etc. So if what you say is correct you better study Welsh rugby and what happens when the men's team has to support all rugby but the provincial unions (clubs in wales) only vote for what favours them over running professional rugby.

Yes the NZRFU is the ruling body in Aotearoa, but they very much answerable to the Provincial Unions, who still do have a big say. I'm not talking about Ireland, so trying to compare the two different nations is slightly out of whack. Our grass roots, etc etc, are developed & natured through the provinces, not the ruling body.

An NPC coach. Why would he stay in NZ??? That alone shows your limitations of any knowledge regarding the game in Aotearoa. Try looking around the globe, as surely you could possibly notice, just how many Kiwi's, players & coaches, are being paid big bucks for their quality services. Well even Gatland managed to secure a handout.

Yes he went straight from NPC to Super twice! Once in as an assistant, once in as a head coach. The pathway is clearly there! By the way my Wales and Ireland article has just been published. Fill your boots. (They published this one less than 12 hours after submission, along with about five articles from others. I wonder what's going on!

McDonald came into Super Rugby as an assistant at the Saders before getting top job at the Blues.

An insider with one year as an assistant, as opposed to one who played and coached there for years.

Clayton McMillan is the current Chiefs coach. Cooper was just before Gatland. What I was doing was talking you through all the Chiefs coaches as they're the ones I know best. If you look at the current coaches, Clayton, Razor and McDonald all came directly from NPC into SR head coach roles. Holland and Dermody both came directly from NPC to SR assistant roles and got promoted.

Is Goodman not also an insider. I don't think he would be coaching an u20s team if he had had other offers, but going off his tract record I am not surprised he is going to the u20s.

most of the people you mention there are over 10 years ago. Not sure who Clayton and Cooper are. Which is my point is it happened all the time in the 00s less so in the 10s and in the 20s most just get an assistant role for a few years first. In the 00s would a coach with the CV of Penny and Laidlaw have got an NZ SR head coaching job. Even Gats who was a European Champions and test manager had to go to NPC before he was allowed near a SR team.

Mmm ..I do get that The Sharks able to offer more money , however if Plumtree was in the running for head coach of The All Blacks I'll wager he will have stayed in NZ . But that goose is cooked . May as well cash in now . Thinking though the quality of life in NZ vastly better than in SA too .That matters . . See plenty Staffers emigrating to NZ . No Kiwis coming to Africa though . Generally though it's a very popular appointment with the Durban faithfull . There are high expectations of him .

You're taking a sample size of two Brendan. Let's not get too carried away. A highly promising coach isn't really expected to stay long just as an NPC coach. A lot of the best have a second job like NZ Maori or U20S. Apart from former Waikato NPC coach Gatland, we've had Clayton (straight from NPC/Maori) Cooper (same) Rennie (straight from NPC/U20S) Foster (straight from NPC.) That's everyone since 2004. Off the top of my head, Razor, Umaga and Boyd were the same as Rennie, Joseph straight from Wellington to the Highlanders, Holland straight from Canterbury to Canes assistant to Canes head, Dermody the same down south, McDonald straight from Tasman to Blues head. I could go on!

Do we know that he was turned down for other gigs? Anyway, the Crusaders have obviously decided that they are going to appoint an insider, that's been their strategy forever and it's worked pretty well overall.
