Duck back from the bench for Canada clash as Wallaroos make three changes

By The Roar / Editor

Piper Duck returns to the Wallaroos for their final Pacific Four Series match against Canada, but won’t lead the team.

Interim captain Michaela Leonard and vice-captain Georgina Friedrichs resume their leadership roles, while Wallaroos captain Piper Duck returns via the bench.

“We saw a much-improved performance against the USA last week,” said coach Jay Tregonning. Australia beat the Americans for the first time having suffered a 50-0 hiding against New Zealand.

“Canada plays a very different style of game and we’ve taken that into consideration during our preparation this week.

“We saw how physical and fast they were against the Black Ferns, and now the Wallaroos are raring to compete against the fourth-best team in the world.”

ACT Brumbies Super W Captain Siokapesi Palu steps in at number 12, replacing Cecelia Smith at inside centre.

Madison Schuck has secured her spot in the reserves alongside fellow prop Bridie O’Gorman, while Duck substitutes for Tabua Tuinakauvadra.

“We’ve had a really positive training week,” said Leonard.

“The squad has worked hard on refining our structures and areas of improvement from last week’s match.

“Although we’ve adapted well to the heat here in Ottawa, the opportunity to play in the evening during the cooler temperatures is a bonus.

“Off the back of last week’s win, our focus has been to continue to strive to be better each day. In the current world rankings, Canada presents as an exciting opportunity to continue chasing that goal.”

The match will kick-off set at 9:00am AEST on Saturday.

Halftime in the USA v NZ match and I had to go check the laws regarding what constitutes a quick tap. Thought I was seeing things! USA took advantage of a 'quick tap' at 23:14 to score a try but I didn't see any kick involved.Maybe I need to get my eyes checked? The law says " The ball must be kicked a visible distance. If the kicker is holding it, it must clearly leave the hands. If it is on the ground, it must clearly leave the mark. Once the kick has been successfully taken the kicker may play the ball again." If anyone else sees this please give me your opinion if you see a replay.

TBH this game will be a real test for the Wallaroos as the Canadians were pretty impressive against the Black Ferns in the first half but did noticeably drop off a little in the second half. Yes some good rugby coming up over the weekend.

It is going to be interesting to see where the Wallaroos are at, especially for the forwards 3 tough forward battles

Could be a long day at the office against a willing and skilful Canada side, Hugh. A result, or even a close loss, would be a major improvement in my view.

Good to see Piper Duck back - expected it would be via the bench. Hard to make too many changes after that win over the USA. Generally stuck to combos although a change at 12, didn't think Cecilia Smith had done anything wrong & her goalkicking had been pretty good.
