In what will be hailed as the start of a new era of men’s tennis Carlos Alcaraz has defeated 23-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic to win the Wimbledon men’s title.
The 20-year-old, 16 years Djokovic’s junior, recovered from losing the first five games in a nervy start to inflict Djokovic’s first defeat on Centre Court for a decade.
In a titanic, see-saw four-hour, 42-minute struggle he won Sunday’s final 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4.
In doing so Alcaraz also denied Djokovic matching Australian Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam wins and Roger Federer’s eight Wimbledon titles.

Fantastic win for Alcaraz and a brilliant match. To inflict Djokovic’s first defeat on Centre Court in a decade and his first five set loss at Wimbledon since 2006 is a hell of an achievement. Alcaraz was unsurprisingly the crowd favourite, his style of play is entertaining and he’s likeable with it and when Novak retires he could well dominate for the next decade.
