'Exhibition stuff': Romania stun Ireland with quick fire try - then concede 82 as Sexton returns

By News / Wire

World No.1 Ireland conceded a try within three minutes against the ultimate minnows of Romania – then turned on the class with a thumping 82-8 win.

Johnny Sexton scored 24 points in his first game for six months before being replaced midway through the second half. In all Ireland responded with 12 tries to Romania’s one through Gabriel Rupanu, who prommptly missed his kick from in front.

“Ireland are in total control now, it’s exhibition stuff,” said former Ireland flyhalf Tony Ward on the BBC in the dying seconds.

“That said, you still have to do it and you still have to compete with the heat and to wear out the opposition and Ireland have certainly done that.

“Some of the quality of the ball handling and the interplay between backs and forwards has been outstanding and we know that’s the hallmark of this side when they’re at their best. Right now, that’s what we’re seeing.”

Ireland coach Andy Farrell said “the first two minutes wasn’t too good but we adapted very well. I thought we calmed down and played some great rugby in the end.”

Romania's 10 was very good. The rest of the Oaks were woeful. They've gone backwards unfortunately. Chile however we're very impressive for their first ever World Cup. Seems South American rugby ha really improved over the last 8 years, Uruguay got an upset last world cup. Yet Europe and Africa never seem to get better.
