Phoenix praying Adelaide can do them a favour as Mariners look to snatch Premier’s Plate in season finale

By Brendan / Roar Pro

Sitting on top of the ladder as it stands, Wellington football fans will be hoping Adelaide can upset Central Coast in the last regular A-League men’s game of the season.

A vital win over the Mariners will give Phoenix their first Premier’s Plate, compliments of a rampaging Reds, who will be competing for pride in Gosford. A draw will still mean Central Coast finish top on goal difference.

Carl Veart’s men have bloomed recently, relying on talisman Hiroshi Ibusuki to score four goals in two matches.

The Japanese striker appeared to be on the outer when the season commenced, only to regain his mojo. He’s now coming fourth in the Golden Boot award.

Wednesday’s meeting at Industree Group Stadium will be Adelaide’s third away game in a row, having previously traveled to Brisbane and Wyndham.

For the Mariners, it’ll be a welcome homecoming, after playing a trio of away teams. This includes an AFC Cup win in Kyrgyzstan, miles away from the palm trees of Our Paradise.

In their last three domestic contests, Mark Jackson’s men have always scored in the final 10 minutes, beating Newcastle, Western United and Wellington. A last minute strike is never out of the question.

Detrimental for Adelaide, they’ve always conceded goals in the closing stages, struggling to defend after the 80th minute against Brisbane, Western United and Macarthur.

Interestingly, the Reds have increased their goal tally over these matches, steadily improving by one, three, then four hits to the back of the net.

Clearly their recent attacking prowess has spiked.

This might pose a threat to Central Coast, as their possession has slowly decreased, falling from 62%, 54%, and then finally floundering at 42%.

Since round 24 in early April, Adelaide relied on only four players to provide points, including superstar Nestory Irankunda.

During the same time, the Mariners had seven athletes taking on domestic responsibilities, showcasing the team’s depth built by coach Jackson.

It should be noted, with the absence of Angel Torres, the side doesn’t have a prolific scorer anymore. Until last week, Alou Kuol hadn’t registered a point since round 10 against Perth.

Adding fuel to the old fire, one week after the Glory game, Brazilian Marco Tulio quit the club, forcing Jackson into a squad reshuffle.

By round 15, Englishman Ryan Edmondson had thankfully arrived, running onto Coopers Stadium in the 81st minute, whereby the Mariners beat Adelaide 4-nil.

Having known the gaffer since his Leeds United days, Edmondson must have been the Mariners’ new lucky charm.

Indeed. After a bunch of losses too. I remember the Mariners losing to Sydney FC in the Australia Cup, Round of 32, after an epic penalty shoot-out. Soon after, Monty left. Drama. There was talk of Ben Cahn coaching, until Mark Jackson was appointed. Take a bow, Action Jackson!

What a great win in the end. What a season - how did they do it? No one would have expected this as the season started.

I had almost given up on the Mariners after twenty minutes. The TV was muted (just vision), the Mrs was doing an online course, & I was playing Lego with my daughter, glimpsing Adelaide dominate with a mountain of possession. … And here were are, Premier’s Plate!

Not looking good Gary and NoMates - CCM are nearly there at 1-0.

If CCM draw or win then thanks Danny Vukovic - still a great keeper.

This is a good looking stadium and field. A perfect A League stadium - such a shame that the Mariners former owner, Charlesworth, wasn’t able to buy and own it. Great header by Kaltek - nearly 1-0.

It reads like Tatu should/could be in the team.

100% there’s a very deep rivalry. For me, the fuse was lit back in February, 2021. Tomi Juric scored a hat-trick at Coopers. That one hurt.

Even more than half would be ideal. Saying that, I thought the AFC Cup crowds would be much larger. Possible light showers tonight too.

I was hoping for a near full house with a possible presentation after the game - even midweek.

based on the squad chosen, adelaide are taking this game seriously - they could've easily selected the next generation (eg tatu) but have picked a team capable of winning. people also forget there is a quiet rivalry brewing between these 2 clubs - even more so since the mariners were one of the 3 clubs (brisbane and macarthur the other 2) that complained to the league that it wasnt fair for irakunda to play after 'turning down' the under 23's squad. quite pathetic really, that multiple clubs were that scared about 1 player wrecking each of its seasons.

Mariners v Adelaide is my favourite A leagues fixture – if there was a non-derby match I would take a non-football fan to, it would be this one, on a Friday night, at Coopers. Hoping for a ripper tonight

Good question. 5k+ crowd for a mid-week game? How’s this… More than five thousand punters, & the Mariner’s win. Less, & Adelaide pounce on Central Coast, with Irankunda scoring a brace.

I’m thinking the majority of A-League fans are backing Wellington, simply to share the spoils around. Jackson’s managed his subs really well too. Plenty have made an impact off the bench. I still believe Melbourne Victory & Sydney FC look stronger on paper. This weekend’s elimination final will be good viewing.

What do you think the crowd will be like tonight? Will the Mariners’ fans turn out in number? Lots of support could get them the premiership.
