The Eagles sit last on the ladder with a percentage of 49.7 – the lowest by a team to this point of a season since Melbourne back in 2013. It’s been the season from hell for Adam Simpson’s team, and with their last seven weeks all featuring losses by over 50 points, things are only getting worse with every passing week.

While their dire COVID run seems to have passed, it didn’t stop them copping their second 100-point loss of the season in Round 11 to the Western Bulldogs. Remarkably, the Eagles had only lost once in 35 years by triple digits in Perth: they’ve now done it twice in five weeks.

Veteran half-back Shannon Hurn returns from a calf injury in time to face the Crows, while Jeremy McGovern has overcome a back issue that saw him subbed out against the Bulldogs. However, it’s hard to see that changing the Eagles’ fortunes in a 2022 campaign that can’t end quickly enough.

The Crows, like the Eagles, have their bye next week, and will be looking to return to the winners’ list after five consecutive losses.

After being touted as a finals threat with consecutive upset wins over Richmond and the Bulldogs, the Crows haven’t come within 20 points of any of their five conquerors, though they could have made a game of their clash with Geelong last week but for some terrible kicking for goal.

Walker’s return from a stint in COVID isolation comes at a handy time: with the Crows’ percentage languishing at just 78, a big win could see them keep their fading finals hopes alive for the time being.
