The first Saturday afternoon clash of the ‘new’ season sees the Brisbane Lions host the Fremantle Dockers at The Gabba. Join The Roar for live scores from 1:45pm (AEST).
Brisbane may have been last year’s fairytale team, but they suffered a straight-sets finals exit and then started 2020 off on a bad note with a 28-point loss to Hawthorn. Lachie Neale battled, but he didn’t have enough support in the midfield, while their defensive structure was cut to ribbons by a Hawks side who moved the ball from coast-to-coast with startling ease.
Freo, on the other hand, will be ruing what could have been after their ferocious fourth-quarter fightback against Essendon fell agonisingly short. Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters were their usual selves, while Sam Sturt starred on debut with three goals, but it wasn’t enough.
The Dockers claimed a thrilling one-point win in the only meeting between these sides last year. The Lions won the previous two meetings by nine goals, but Freo took the last nine meetings prior to that.

Meek is 22 yo two more than Darcy and the same height but a little trimmer, been on the list for a couple of years now played in two JLT games, need to try him out sometime this year to see what he can offer. Hopefully Henry is not to far off and Blakely puts a bit of pressure on a few of some of the other guys to lift.

That's twice where we have played better when Darcy went off and Lobb went into the ruck. He was immense at the end against Essendon and once again very solid yesterday. Of course you want him forward as he's a great target but with Darcy being a bit of a liability can you afford it? We don't have a lot of ruck depth either, Lloyd Meek is pretty much it and from what I've seen at WAFL level I remain unconvinced. May be worth looking at luring a Time English or a Luke Jackson home in a year or two, but until then I think Lobb has to toughen up and play that role.

Yeah perhaps a slightly conservative approach but the last thing you want is them to have an injury being not fully ready. Sturt didn't play seconds, I'd assume if he's fit he's a walk up start.

They were all ready to play and all played...seconds! Silly conservatism cost us 4 points. Sturt was fine. It was Wilson who was not ready to play. Hill with no legs is better than Matera. Matera just stands still with fingers crossed...just not an effective method.

Trade for me, he looks one of those long term injury prone problems for mine . We have had to many of them in the past thanks.

13th agree. Is Darcy becoming a liability? He seems to be more injured than fit and we look much better when Lobb is in the ruck. Again we nearly pinched the game. If you were playing a must win game right now you'd probably leave Darcy out and play Lobb in the ruck. I never thought of Darcy as a trade but where to for him? Persevere or trade?

Hogan had 17 possessions in the scratch game and went really well from all reports natural replacement for Darcy even if he does recover. Serong is a must to come in.

Thought the same. He should of shepherded it as it was sailing through.

Credit where it's due Don, he had a good game. Needs to start kicking straight.. kicked 2, should of had 5.. yes Margetts robbed him of 1.

You could make an argument that Tabs should of shepherded it through as it would have been a goal but that doesn't excuse Margetts! What I couldn't fathom was that he went over to the goal umpire who was right there, who said he believed it was a mark.. then still overturned it from 80m away!

Sturt was injured so that couldn't be helped. Not sure Hilly is fully match fit from all reports. I'm sure Hogan will walk straight back in for Darcy this week. Agree that Matera and Colyer shouldn't be anywhere near the side.

Lobb is going to have to suck it up and play as the number 1 ruck, we look better when he plays there. Darcy barely gave our midfielders a look yesterday but as soon as Lobb went in there he really took it to Stefan Martin. If Hogan comes in and Taberner continues to Improve, Lobb plays ruck with Tabs backing him up. Thought Hayden Young did enough to keep his spot ahead of Hughes who was woeful and should make way for Wilson. Hoping Sturt is fit to come back in and let’s see Serong debut! Changes for next week Out: Darcy, Colyer, Hughes, Matera In: Hogan, Wilson, Serong, Sturt

I think we've just happened to play in a lot of close games, we win some and lose some. I feel a bit for J-Lo as I reckon the start to his coaching career has been better than 0-2, just ran out of time against Essendon and then we're perhaps a bit unlucky yesterday. Port next week looks real tough before Gold Coast (who as we saw are no gimme). Adelaide after that may be our best chance in the hub.
Don Freo

Hardly. Mundy was 10 metres clear of everyone when he kicked it.

What's with this missing parts of the game, AD? You haven't fallen in love, have you?

Neale got a lot of his stuff in the second half when Fyfe replaced Lobb up forward. In the first half, Neale set up the early advantage, Fyfe turned the game. The Dockers selection of Matera and Collyer ahead of Hill, Hogan and Sturt was the real difference...and Dean Margetts.

Roar Rookie
One thing is certain if Neale had not walked out on us and take him out of the Lions today .........different result .

Schultz looks set to be more than handy. Darcy continues his bad run of injuries regularly leaving the ground early in games. I think he has to go get his body to mature, Hogan comes in and Lobb will have to take the ruck or perhaps Meek.

mmmm I guess the loss is character building but we could do without it. We got glimpses but obviously it’ll take a little while for everything to gel. Lachie Schulz looked good, too bad about Sean Darcy, that is a real blow

Thought the kick had been called touched straight away plus Taberner didn't look to claim the mark.
