Carlton and Gold Coast resumed hostilities with Carlton taking the points winning 15.9.99
to 11.9.75.
On paper this was the two bottom teams in the competition, but the game they put on put many higher-ranked contests to shame.
Both teams played out a rampaging, end-to-end game, as Carlton managed to hold off a third-quarter fightback to run out winners by twenty-four points.
Carlton were the better team for much of the game, with their clean ball use and rebound play off half back catching the eye.
In addition their ability to break the Suns’ press and run hard out the back gave them a regular and eye-catching avenue to goal.
However, the Suns fought back valiantly in the second half of the third quarter with some thrilling play of their own, putting on five of the last six goals of the quarter.
Both teams lifted their pressure in the last quarter which tightened up the game and Carlton managed to regain control and run out winners.
For Carlton, that is their second win on the trot and Teague appears to have brought about a real resurgence. Ed Curnow (32), Sam Walsh (27), Simpson (24) and Murphy (22) were the major ball winners for Carlton as the young bucks combined with the old heads.
Speaking of old heads, Dale Thomas had twenty touches at 90 per cent efficiency and even created on a clever goal, as the Blues defence controlled the game with their clean ball use.
Mathew Kennedy kicked four straight, while McKay kicked two goals and the rest were shared around in a fashion which will please Blues fans.
For the Suns Brayden Fiorini (32), Touk Miller (27), Will Brodie (26) and Darcy Macpherson (25) had the most touches.
Alex Sexton was a dangerous live wire up forward and kicked three while Wright kicked two and could have had more.
Final score
Carlton 15.9.99
Gold Coast 11.9.75
The Carlton Blues and Gold Coast Suns go head to head today in a match that won’t have any impact on the finals race, but could go a long way to shaping the draft order at the end of the season. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 2:10pm AEST.
Carlton have been a side refreshed after Brendon Bolton was sacked six weeks ago and replaced by caretaker coach David Teague.
They shocked Brisbane by 15 points in Teague’s first match as coach, but have also one three of five under his tutelage.
Arguably the most impressive was a comeback win against Fremantle a couple of weeks ago, where they were without superstar skipper Patrick Cripps.
Gold Coast on the other hand, after a relatively competitive start to the season, have fallen completely off the deep end in recent weeks.
The Suns are currently suffering from a twelve-game losing streak, but their last fortnight in particular has been an absolute nightmare.
All things considered they’ve been lucky not to let slip the first 100-point loss of the 2019 season – losing to Richmond by 92 and Adelaide by 95 in their last two.
Gold Coast’s most recent AFL win, ironically, came against the same opponent they’ll face today, in Round 4 at Metricon Stadium.
Today might be their last realistic chance to get a win on the board in 2019, if you can even call it that.
Win and they will go level with the Blues on four wins and stand a fighting chance of getting off the bottom of the ladder.
Lose and you can basically guarantee they will be taking home the 2019 wooden spoon, and the No.1 draft pick.
If Carlton win, they’ll rise above Melbourne into 16th, and push their first-round pick, already in the hands of the Adelaide Crows, back to No.3 overall.

And there is the Siren! Sexton has a final kick from just outside fifty. The torpedo is his weapon of choice, and he sends it into the crowd, but well wide. No score. Final Scores: Carlton 15.9 (99) Gold Coast 11.9 (75)

'26 Suns go forward looking for what will likely be a final opportunity.

However, it has been an excellent last half of the game! The third quarter was a raging goalfest of big momentum swings, while this last quarter has been wonderfully high pressure as both teams have risen to the occasion.

Just over four minute left here and the sun looks all but set on Gold Coast’s chances.

Suns piling on the pressure but Carlton break out of the forward press with some strength and dash, they go long into fifty, but the Suns defence deal with it well.

'20 Suns break through the centre, clever tap over to the man in space. They have players everywhere but can't quite find the goal.

Carlton snuff out the sniff as Harry McKay kicks truly from around fifty. Its an absurd bounce, going almost straight up but makes it over by a ball length before the defender can touch it on the way down. Goal Carlton! Carlton 15.9 (99) Gold Coast 11.8 (74)

Big Wright marks on the edge of fifty as the Suns take it down the other end. Unsure what to do he kicks long, pass or shot, hard to tell, but it bounces through for a behind Carlton 14.9 (93) Gold Coast 10.8 (68)

Meanwhile, Carlton find a man on the boundary line forty-five metres out. It's Jack Silvagni, nice looking kick but not quite on target, behind. Carlton 14.9 (93) Gold Coast 10.7 (67)
