It’s the game that nearly didn’t happen when the Gold Coast Suns take on the Hawthorn Hawks in the familiar surrounds of… the SCG. Catch up with the match with live scores on The Roar from 7:40pm (AEST).
This match caused the AFL plenty of headaches during the week. Originally slated for Darwin as the headline act of Indigenous Round, the Northern Territory’s border closure to Victorians meant the Hawks were unable to get to the Top End for the match. With the Suns’ main home ground of Metricon Stadium also out of the question due to Queensland following suit, the game has landed in Sydney – though not before a postponement was suggested.
The Suns have flirted at times with serious improvement in 2021, upsetting finals hopeful Sydney and pushing a number of quality teams all the way. However, at 3-7 and sitting 15th, they need premiership points desperately, and nothing short of that against the struggling Hawks will be satisfactory.
The Hawks continue to battle in 2021, the issues facing their ageing list leading to suggestions star players, including Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell, could be offloaded for a stronger draft hand. No doubt Alastair Clarkson will push back against such a response, but only wins will silence the critics.
In happier news, Shaun Burgoyne is back for Indigenous Round, the veteran Hawk moving ever closer to the 400-game milestone. He’ll want nothing more than to celebrate it in style here.

G'day Rookie. If you'd seen the brilliant shows put on in Darwin last year for Sir Doug Nicholls Round compared to the two-bit welcome to country in Sydney last night then you'd be disappointed too. Maybe cultural sensitivity isn't your strong point. Quite separately, the SCG seems to suit the Suns in terms of ground shape and size, so the win came anyway in spite of a Suns game having to be held in neutral territory. I actually thought the umpires had a poor night. How much is it to ask for some consistency?

Yep. Both should be on the table.

Yet you just were complaining about having to play there interesting. Congratulations on the win good to see the umpires didn’t conspire against the Mighty Suns again which ofc allowed for the win. Those pesky umpires must be mighty footy players win soooo many games yet I have yet to see them get any possessions it’s always been a great mystery too me. Guess I’m no footy expert/guru lol like you hey Roarks?

Is it worth floating Titch for trade? Easily fetch a first, or maybe Wingard instead? Reckon Lions would love him on their list if they fall short this year.

Another thing. That draft order will be interesting in years to come to see how it stacks up. Walsh belongs on top. Rozee is probably second. Which King is the best? Did the Suns see Rowell coming in 2019? Was getting Luko, Rankine and King, followed by Rowell, Anderson and Flanders, the best draft haul of recent times? Add Bowes, Ainsworth, Ballard, Powell, Budarick and the as yet unseen 2020 Suns draftees and I think there's a premiership in the next 10 years. Just need a foil for Ben King in the forwards who can kick 40 goals and have 15 chopouts in the ruck while running 15 kms and taking 8 marks. Not asking much, but that's the job description.

There is no doubting that Nick Blakey is a very good player. What isn't resolved is where to play him. Sydney, like Carlton with Walsh, Suns with Luko and King, Port with Rozee and Dogs with Smith knew that there was no was point in playing him in the reserves because he wouldn't learn anything. At U18 level, Blakey would just go mental through the midfield, push forward to kick goals and use his height to take marks. AFL has found him out as he has failed to fill out. Maybe a stint in the VFL will help him find his best position because I don't think it is going be Buddy's heir.

Union over AFL? No chance. Compare recent Tahs and Swans crowds. Not even close.

Blakey certainly not playing to his draft position at the moment. Rightly dropped this week, Rowbottom and McInerney well ahead of him at lower picks.

That wasn't a hard fought win Thom, far from it. Didn't say anything about the way the Suns played but the Hawks didn't show any intensity or effort and put no pressure on the Suns. The Suns took advantage of that and had the game wrapped up early, the result was never in doubt after the opening five minutes. They should of been playing the rookies 2 years ago, they are now 2 years further behind in development than a lot of players at the same age in game experience.

Welcome to supporting a mediocre team. Every game is frustrating and it seems like there is no intensity and the errors are glaring. They are just young and sick of losing. The Suns saw it from the opening bounce and put them away early. From then it was always how much rather than who, but the Hawks showed some fight. It's just my opinion. I'm in my 11th losing season as a Suns fan after growing up a Bears fan. Give the Suns some credit for winning a hard fought game. Give the Hawks at least some acknowledgement for playing the rookies.

Max King is behind Ben King by about a season. Both are running well below capacity. They called their draft year a Super Draft for a reason. Sam Walsh, Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine, Max King, Connor Rozee, Ben King, Bailey Smith, Tarryn Thomas, Nick Blakey, Zak Butters, Isaac Quaynor, the list goes on. Take a look at key forwards in the first round of the last 10 drafts and the only ones going better than Ben King are Josh Bruce (3rd club) and Harry McKay (breakout year). The Coleman might be wide open, but Ben is going at almost Buddy levels for a third year player. The Suns got the right King.

Zac Smith gets a Gatorade shower! lol Oldest player in the team and Foundation Sun. Queenslander too!
Dean

Sorry Bruce but the Hawks won't win again this year. This run of games was their best chance against teams like North, Suns etc.
Dean

Seriously, Hawks were shocking and lacked any intensity. If that wasn't playing poorly Thom l have no idea what poorly means. Regardless if your a young side or not, the effort should always be there. It wasn't from the start and apart from the last part of the first quarter it was no existent.

True. After the Swans played in similar fashion against the Suns a few weeks back, I YouTubed highlights of the 2005 GF. Hearing ‘Leo Barry, you star’ always cheers me up.
