The GWS Giants are looking to bounce back from last week’s thrilling draw with a win over the travelling Carlton Blues. Stay up to date with this Saturday night AFL clash right here on The Roar with live scores from 7:25pm (AEST).
Bizarre as it might seem given it was against the last-placed North Melbourne, the Giants’ Round 13 draw was essentially as good as a win. The result takes their poor percentage all but out of the equation in the run home, and with crosstown rivals to Sydney losing to Hawthorn in another shock result, plans of a late charge to the finals remain on track.
Still, they’ll have to be far better than they were last week against the likely wooden spooners to get close. The Giants spotted the Roos a 28-point three quarter time lead, and while they motored from there to be one slightly more accurate Daniel Lloyd kick away from an incredible win, they won’t want to be doing that too many times.
For the Blues, the bye has at least done them some good when it came to the selection table. Nic Newman and Harry McKay, who both suffered concussions in their Round 12 loss to West Coast, have both recovered enough to be named. McKay’s form has seen him become one of the leading forwards in the competition in 2021, and his signature for a further two years will have gladdened the hearts of Blues fans.
However, things are far from rosy for David Teague and his men. Their lost to a depleted Eagles outfit before the bye was a culmination of a first half of the year dominated by loss after loss to the AFL’s better sides. Time and again the Blues have been given the opportunity to make a statement of intent for a first finals berth since 2013, and time and again they have failed to grasp it.
Sitting fourteenth with a 4-8 record, finals are all but off the table now for the Blues, but any lingering chance they have would be snuffed out with a loss here to a fellow hopeful from outside the eight.
Both sides have made changes aplenty at the selection table. The Giants welcome back former captain Phil Davis for his first match since Round 3; expect him to head straight to McKay at the opening bounce. Half-back Harry Perryman is also a welcome return, but veteran ruckman Shane Mumford’s absence is a major blow. Remarkably, the Giants are 0-5 in 2021 without ‘big Mummy’ in the team.
As for the Blues, former captain Marc Murphy has once again been dropped as he begins to fall behind some emerging youngsters for spots in the 2022. Two of those, Lachie Fogarty and Luke Parkers, have returned, while former Giant Matthew Kennedy is back, replacing another former Giant in Will Setterfield.

Actually the Swans are a bit unpredictable. They could easily drop a few and leave the door open for GWS or Essendon.

Can’t maintain it for more than 2 1/2 quarters for some reason and now their confidence and enthusiasm is shot they are getting worse by the week. I can see them probably only winning 2 out of the last 9 now and finishing back in familiar bottom 4 territory.

Yeah Carlton are in that weird middle ground where they sometimes look like world beaters

We haven’t even had a Melbourne 2017 or 2018 yet. Feels like we’re a long way off.

They don't seem to going anywhere with Dew. He took on a tough job but after almost 4 seasons in charge and very little improvement, they need to ask the question: is he the right man to lead them forward? Buckley coaching them would be interesting but he probably won't consider coaching for a while after the past 2 years. I reckon he would be a good chance to get another coaching job at a club like gws or gc if Dew and Cameron cannot turn things around quickly.

GC can never seem to get their act together. 10 years is a long time to not even go above 12th on the ladder. WC made their first final series in their 2nd season in 1988, Adelaide in their 3rd season in 1993, Brisbane in 1997 in their 1st season as the Lions, Port in their 3rd season in 1999 and Freo in 2003 after their 9th season. GC are in their 11th season to date and have been nowhere near making finals. They have always been a cellar dweller in that time and have given their supporters zero hope. Stuart Dew is surely starting to feel the heat with coaching this mob? Rowell is back in the squad and people were saying they will be a different team with him in it but they have been shocking in the last 2 weeks. Clearly something is wrong with their culture and I would not be surprised in the slightest if their younger players like King, Lukusious, Rankine etc. decide to jump ship like so many others have done in the past at this club.

At least you’ve never traded pick one for Trent croad

We’ll probably trade the picks to Wce in exchange for Josh Kennedy when he retires

I get the feeling that Carlton are somewhat similar to 2019 Melbourne. They need to take a couple really good draft picks into the draft this year and nail them.

Do you count Carltons win against Richmond as a bombers final win? If you weren’t surfing the peptide it was yours

What’s a few more years anyway

True. There’s not many contenders for that eighth spot. I think the sides currently there are safe. Unless one of them fall off a cliff.

In the last quarter, both sides were looking weary. GWS because of injury, Carlton because I do not know why. The game style created by rule changes and rule interpretations is 1. painful to watch (the maul) 2. exhausting for players (which makes them prone to injury) 3. removing highlights (high marks) from the game Only the top 5 sides seem to be able to run out a full game.

still think they are one of the better sides outside 8

True true I barely remember the last time Essendon won a final.

The others response to your question, BB2, is that if a player at a poorly performing club is, "not up to it", a trade is unlikely. De- listing, possibly.

Last three games they’ve been smashed by the Lions, had a draw with the one win kangaroos and beaten......Carlton. They are not a very good side.
