There’ll be four players making their AFL debut and a further six making club debuts when the St Kilda Saints host the Gold Coast Suns at Marvel Stadium to kick off the final day of Round 1. Join The Roar for live scores from the match, starting from 1:10pm AEDT.

It’s a clash of 2018 cellar-dwellers today as the Saints and Suns, who won just four games each last year, will both have the chance to get their 2019 season started in ideal fashion against gettable opposition.

Plenty has changed at both clubs over the offseason. The Saints made a big signing bringing across Dan Hannebery on a five-year deal, while also bringing in mature players from other clubs (Dean Kent) and at the draft.

Kent will debut for the club today and two of their mature picks, Matthew Parker and Callum Wilkie, have also impressed enough to earn Round 1 berths, while a third, Nick Hind, is in the emergencies.

There are some real head-scratchers in the Saints’ selection though as top-ten draft picks Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield have both been overlooked, as has impressive fan-favourite ruckman Rowan Marshall.

The Saints weren’t able to get Dan Hannebery up for this one, and made concerning comments during the week that their star recruit will need to be ‘rebuilt’ and might not debut for the club for some time.

The Suns also brought in mature talent over the offseason, moreso from other clubs than via the draft, but a little via the draft.

Sam Collins, Jordan Murdoch, George Horlin-Smith, Jack Hombsch and Anthony Miles are all players who couldn’t get their hands on a regular senior gig elsewhere but have been picked up by the Suns and look a chance to be regulars there.

They’re also debuting a mature talent in Chris Burgess who was plucked from the state leagues via the special assistance given to them by the AFL.

The most talented of their new faces undoubtedly however is No.2 draft pick Jack Lukosius who will make his AFL debut today. He didn’t blow us away in the preseason, but remains one to watch.

Prediction
St Kilda probably have more talent in this match, but not by a huge margin, and their preseason has been plagued with interruption and misfortune while things have gone relatively to plan for Gold Coast, albeit that ‘to plan’ means being a pretty average football side. Sadly, ‘pretty average’ might be enough to beat the Saints today.

Gold Coast by 12 points.

Neither of these teams will get the spoon, that dishonor will go to Carlton. These two teams can at least kick over 80 points. Don’t get carried away by Carlton on Thursday night, as they only played two quarters of decent football. We will get thumped by Port Adelaide next week and then our confidence will be shot.

Wow - Peter Wright should have had a shot from the 50 metres out rather than lob it to the top of the square - may have cost Suns a draw.

Has a coach been boned after round 1 before. I think Richardson should get it if they walk away with a loss here. Just pathetic.
