Sydney host St Kilda in Saturday afternoon’s early clash, with SCG encounter being the final time we see these two sides in 2019. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 1:45pm AEST.
With St Kilda’s 2019 finals hopes officially dying with last weekend’s loss to Carlton, and Sydney being long out of finals aspirations for a couple of months now, this clash in Sydney will be the final time we see either of these two teams in season 2019. Alas, there’s still plenty of intriguing storylines developing out of this one.
First and foremost, Lance Franklin – who hasn’t played at any level since June – returns to Sydney’s line up to play his 300th clash, a momentous occasion for the superstar forward.
Sydney will additionally be celebrating the careers of premiership players Nick Smith, Jarrad McVeigh and Kieran Jack, all of whom are retiring after today’s clash.
St Kilda’s celebration isn’t as notable, but it’s still important to recognise former Blue Sam Rowe’s debut for the club – which is also his 100th game at AFL level.
St Kilda’s last month has been alright, coupling the frustrating losses to the Blues and Adelaide with impressive wins over Melbourne and Freo.
With Brent Ratten far from locked in for the top job, a big performance – and scalp on the road – would be a marvellous result for the club headed into the offseason.
Sydney’s last win was last Friday’s over the Demons, while losses to Port, GWS and Geelong preceded that. A win would be good as they too head into the offseason.
In terms of personnel changes, there’s just the one for the Saints. Sam Rowe, as mentioned, is in the side, replacing the omitted Ben Paton.
Sydney’s made two changes – Buddy and Jarrad McVeigh are in, James Bell and Ryan Clarke have been dropped.
Prediction
Sydney – buoyed by both their home ground advantage and the major milestones they are celebrating – are the easy, and probably most intelligent, picks.
However, I’m going to be a bit foolish, and very riskily tip the Saints. They’re capable of some good footy, and every round needs an upset, right? Saints to steal it at the death.

Same old, same old. Tipped us for 10 wins for the year but atrocious goal kicking again undermined the whole equation as Saints produced 233.247 for the year at 48% conversion. Worst in the Comp ? An improvement on the 43% last season ! The irony, as ever. Worst conversion from open play in the AFL with Saints only kicking more goals than points in 7 of the 22 rounds !! Swans last game of the season typifies the inability over Richardson's tenure & Ratten's cameo (maybe only what he gets ?) to convert all the blood, sweat and grunt. Indeed Richo's parting comment we didn't kick more goals as the biggest regret ! Its been like this for too many seasons now and is so frustratingly bleeding obvious that I wanna shred my membership after 50 years once again ! Oh well lets see 20:20 here we come !!!

Can't have done Ratten's chances much good with Ross Lyon formally on the market...

I gotta say, the Saints will be absolutely kicking themselves (or missing kicking themselves, hah) after a rubbish goal kicking effort - 8.16 is no where near par for the footy club. They had some superb moments, and took the lead for a while, but that final quarter fade out will frustrate them - and interim coach Brent Ratten, who enters the off season with plenty to think about. And there's full time. It's a perfect end to the season for the Sydney Swans, as goals to retirees Kieran Jack and Jarrad McVeigh, and a quartet of majors to 300th gamer Buddy Franklin, cap off a big win over St Kilda. They prevail by 45 points! Sydney: 17.7 (109) St Kilda: 8.16 (64)

About a minute to go in this clash. Can anybody garner a late goal? Sydney: 17.7 (109) St Kilda: 8.16 (64)

Ooops, somewhere along the line I added an extra point to St Kilda's scoreline. I'll amend that now. Sydney: 17.7 (109) St Kilda: 8.16 (64)

Q4 '4 BEHIND ST KILDA This game is far gone, but Membrey keeps his head high, going for goal. But that's a rubbish effort, and he misses the lot. Sydney: 16.7 (103) St Kilda: 8.17 (65)

Q4 '5 GOAL SYDNEY KIERAN JACK! He, too, slams through a goal on the run! That's sensational, as the SCG erupts in joy! Buddy, yup, McVeigh, yup. Jack, yup. All three milestone men have majors. Sydney: 16.6 (102) St Kilda: 8.16 (64)

Q4 '7 BEHIND ST KILDA Hind has a shot, but opts to pass it off ... through to Rowe! This time, it's an easier shot, and ... this one misses, too. Sydney: 15.6 (96) St Kilda: 8.16 (64)

Q4 '8 BEHIND ST KILDA Sam Rowe, in his 100th game, takes a mark, and it looks like he'll have a shot. He does, in fact, has a shot, but the kick falls short and is sent through for a minor. Sydney: 15.6 (96) St Kilda: 8.15 (63)

Q4 '10 BEHIND SYDNEY Menzel misses, as Buddy looks pretty annoyed that he was passed over in the goal square. Sydney: 15.6 (96) St Kilda: 8.14 (62)
