Yeah like all those times blokes legs have been snapped by blokes lying on the ground. Seriously, one guy (Rohan) ever got his leg snapped by a high-speed 'baseball-style slide'. This idea that people battling with their heads over the ball are a grave threat to lower limbs is so over played it's ridiculous. We worry about people playing for high contact. At least you take the risk of getting knocked out there. It's much less risky to arrive to a contest a fraction late and tumble across the guy over the ball. You might get a free. You might concuss him. Win:win.

I thought both frees were there. If they aren't frees to the Hawks players, then it has to be a free to the Melbourne players for high contact. No wonder Brayshaw has so many concussions if that's how he treats his head. Lewis ducked his head almost trying to invoke a free for high contact. The rule for contact with legs is clear. Not allowed to put your body in the way of someone's legs. The Lewis contact could have easily snapped a leg. Player just have to be smarter and more aware.

I don’t question in any way that there’s a worthy discussion over this and the subsequent sliding free kick. What I do question was the incessant missing from the commentators that ‘he was just going for the ball’, as if that actually makes a difference if you carry out what is deemed a dangerous action.

If Mitchell hadn't run 10 meters, 100 meters off the ball to bump Oliver then we wouldn't even be talking about it. The ball was nowhere near them so Oliver didn't need to brace for contact. More should be made of Mitchell's action, not Oliver's reaction.
