'Greene gets two weeks, Selwood gets off': Does this incident prove the 'Toby Tax' is real?

By The Roar / Editor

“If you’re going to let Joel Selwood off for exactly the same incident… you let Toby Greene off.”

Except that Selwood doesn't apologise watch the clip, he looks more angry than apologetic. I will agree however, that Selwood's action in comparison is very low impact compared high/medium impact but the action, which was described by tribunal as an "inherently dangerous action" is still very much there. I would've liked to have seen it graded as careless and a fine issued at a minimum for consistency with the Greene incident

Not sure I concur that he there is a Toby tax, except that he has been fined a great deal over his career, and received relatively few suspensions given the high number of reports. I think the comparison lends more weight to the view that there is a Selwood Protection Racket, and has been for a long time. Anyone who cant see it , is either a Geelong fan or blind.

You're not comparing apples with apples. The Selwood incident was clearly a very low grade careless accident. Greene put Dangerfield in hospital and was more reckless than careless. The AFL rightly or wrongly assesses on the outcome, not the action. Selwood, unlike Greene, also immediately apologised to the other player. Greene walked off happy with what he did. There's no Toby tax. There's just the cold fact he's been found guilty 22 times and he's a recidivist thug.

Selwood is the most protected player in the AFL. The Snake has been gifted “high” frees all his career as he constantly dives and plays for them. Sure, he goes hard for the ball, but he is also quite a dirty player, unpopular with supporters and players of opposition Clubs. He’ll be 34 next season, so he’s just about cooked, in which case he is a good representation of Geelong FC as a whole. Past their use-by date (same as Chris Scott) and finally cooked after they lose to Melbourne next week. They will fall off the cliff hard in 2022 similar to Richmond this year, and be down for many years as they have 17 players 29+ and very thin stocks of quality young players, having blooded and played very few, in sharp contrast to Clubs like Sydney who are definitely on the rise …
