Leigh Montagna floats the idea of the AFL introducing the Captain's Challenge

By The Roar / Editor

It comes after several matches were affected by howlers this season that the AFL has admitted were wrong calls – including Jeremy Cameron’s non-mark against Sydney.

I think there is enough rules already for an umpire to contend with. The 15 metre rule for a kick is the most difficult to judge. I watch many of the weekend games and some short kicks under 15 metres are permitted and sometimes allowable kicks according to the rule are called "not fifteen" by the umpire. If all kicks were permitted, the difficulty of judging if the distance was 15 or not would be eliminated.

What a sulk of a comment that was. I'm a cats fan and I'm big enough to admit the umpires gifted us the game against the Lions. Swings and roundabouts...

@Dangersphere The thing is, Geelong had the rub of the green for much of the match. That one went against you; a bunch of other dicey calls that led to goals fell your way. Swings and roundabouts. That aside, this idea of a captain's pick is laughably bad. Any form of reviewing field umpiring decisions will go a long way to ruining the game.

btw danger, u really think its 'fraudulent' umpiring ? why did u deserve the win, u had plenty of chances to have a comfortable win looking at the scoring shots 28 -20 was it, bad kicking is bad football

first up will admit i would gutted if it happened to my team ...... secondly cats are my second team so cant say i hate them at all, in fact prior to our recent run of success that '07 - '11 cats team were my fave ...... my point is there is already enough adjudicating happening off field with ARC do we really want more ..... third - cameron MAY have kicked that goal but he also couldve missed so u cant say for sure it cost u a win, in my view there are so many other things happening earlier in the game that equally cost u a game in this case cats poor conversion so its a bit of a fallacy to pin it all on one incident late in the game .... has it been definitely cleared up that the ump didnt call touched on the kick he 'marked' ? ..... swings & roundabouts - believe the cats benefitted from a dud call v the lions a few weeks back ? ...... if we were to implement every idea for the 'improvement' of the game these self proclaimed 'experts' continually come up with we may eventually be wearing bibs to keep us in zones playing with a square ball on a tennis court trying to pop that ball through a hoop with hockey sticks, fair dinkum if they dont like the sport follow something else, leave the bl00dy game alone for goodness sake

Hopefully it happens to your team soon so you can get a good taste of it for yourself. Easy to sit there and talk down when a team you hate has copped a loss as a direct result of poor/fraudulent umpiring, but maybe the tune will be a little different after it's denied you a deserved win.

theyre moaning about the length of games now, so we need another thing to stretch it out longer ? why do they only freak about decisions at the end of the game, why not have every decision sent to some judging panel to ponder over for a bit so we can ensure theyre absolutely correct ? fair dinkum, theres always some flog coming up with their bright idea about how to 'improve' the game .........
