Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers

Super Bowl LIV

Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
Kansas City Chiefs San Francisco 49ers
31 SCORE 20

The biggest event on the US sporting calendar gets underway as the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs clash in Super Bowl LIV. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 10:30am (AEDT).

Two of the game’s most exciting young quarterbacks go head-to-head, with 2017 no.10 draft pick Patrick Mahomes coming up against Tom Brady’s former understudy in Jimmy Garoppolo. It also pits of the longest-tenured coaches in Andy Reid, against a bright young mind in Kyle Shanahan.

The Chiefs (12-4, first AFC West, second AFC) overcame a midseason form slump in fine fashion, winning six straight games to finish the regular season. They’ve scored at least 20 points in every game bar one this season, eclipsing 30 points on a whopping nine occasions – including both playoff games.

They put together a wild comeback over the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round, before holding off the fairytale Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship game.

In the other corner are the 49ers (13-3, first NFC West, first NFC), who have reached the summit on the back of ferocious defense. San Francisco have held their opponents to fewer than 20 points on eight occasions this season – conceding a single-digit score in half of them.

Their Divisional Round win over Minnesota saw them hold the Vikings to just 147 yards – a club record – before they dominated the Green Bay Packers to reach the decider.

The 49ers are gunning for their sixth Super Bowl victory, which tie them with Pittsburgh and New England for the most in NFL history.

Kansas City, on the other hand, are aiming for their first Super Bowl win since Super Bowl IV in 1970, the fifth-longest championship drought in the NFL.

Prediction
As the old adage goes, offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. Patrick Mahomes is undoubtedly a prodigious talent who will be the undisputed number one quarterback in the league by this time next year, but it’s very, very hard to go past San Francisco’s incredible defense.

Having defeated far superior opposition on route to the Super Bowl, I’m backing the Niners to cause the upset.

San Francisco 27, Kansas City 21

Patrick Mahomes is crowned Super Bowl LIV MVP. I would've given it to Damien Williams personally, but he was a very close second.

I will say, this is where a club song really shines. I’ve always found the post-match ceremony in the AFL and NRL much, much, much better than this oddly crowded and stop-start NFL stuff.

They actually get donated to Africa - legitimately. You can find amazing photos on the web of scores of children wearing all sorts of 'alternate reality' sporting merchandise.

I’ve always wondered what happens to all the champions hats and shirts for the losing team since both teams have all those made up for their team.

INTERCEPTION Insult to injury now. Jimmy Garoppolo is forced to go for glory, but Kansas City are wise to it and Kendall Fuller picks it off. KC – 31 SF – 20 Q4: 0:57

Dammit - my bet of KC win, PM MVP + 300 yards looks like falling just short.

San Francisco take the touchback on the kick-off but it all looks to be book-keeping from here. KC – 31 SF – 20 Q4: 1:12

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS That. Will. Do it! Damien Williams - who, for mine, has been Super Bowl MVP - takes it 38 yards for the score and that puts the game well out of San Francisco's reach! KC – 31 SF – 20 Q4: 1:12

San Francisco limit the first run to four yards and call a timeout. They need a three-and-out. KC – 24 SF – 20 Q4: 1:20
