Match preview

Australia will look to keep their dominant start to the summer of cricket going when they take on Sri Lanka in the second T20 at the Gabba. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of the match from 7:10pm (AEDT).

The home side had a dominant win in the opening match of the campaign, and will be looking for more of the same as they head to a humid Brisbane.

These conditions will probably suit the Sri Lankans even less than Adelaide, with the pitch likely to provide something for the fast bowlers, and the humid conditions likely to make the first couple of overs with the ball critical.

That being said, veteran skipper Lasith Malinga will hold the keys to their performance, with spinners often not having their way on the Gabba in short form cricket.

If Malinga and Kasun Rajitha can’t get early wickets, then the Aussie top order of David Warner and Aaron Finch, who both found some form at the Adelaide Oval, could go big once again.

They are coming off a performance which guided Australia to a mammoth and unchangeable score of 233, while the bowlers were also strong.

It’s be fair to say the Aussie bowlers haven’t really been tested yet though, given the score being chased by the tourists left absolutely no pressure.

There will also be a change for this game, with Mitchell Starc out to attend his brother’s wedding. It means that Billy Stanlake is likely to come into the starting XI for the home side.

The only real intrigue outside of the bowling for the Aussies is whether their middle order will be tested. Steve Smith, not known as a great T20 player, is still yet to have a bat in national colours on Australian soil since his suspension came to an end, while the form of Ashton Turner, Alex Carey and Ashton Agar are all unknown quantities.

Prediction
Australia come into this match as red-hot favourites, just like they did in Adelaide. Brisbane hands them conditions which suit, and they should run away with victory once more.

Yes, of course, they've done their time and now they're back in great form. But it is something that some people, and I will put myself in that category, who just cannot forget it. Bearing in mind I remember that Athers did it and du Plessis did it and I still cannot forgive Mohammed Amir for his match fixing no matter how many internationals he now plays for Pakistan and how well he plays for Pakistan. I am not trying to wind people up but I suppose that's the difficulty of being an Englishman writing for an Aussie website - I cannot judge the mood over there because I have never been. I am learning all the time.

Thing is Josh, mention of the 3 should no longer be prefaced by the ban. They’ve done their time. We had a year to ruminate on their crime and the size of the ban. They’re back and available to be selected on their merits. Unless, of course, you just want to wind people up. Annoys me like calling Samu Kerevi a Fijian Australian.

If playing T20 affected his test form I agree. Does a T20 side need a batsman for the team to bat around? I’m not sure

Smith has averaged up around the high 30's in the IPL for years now. Playing a few T20's for Australia won't change anything imo.

He's averaged around the high 30 mark for years in the IPL... He's always been a good T20 player. Playing a few T20's here and there for Australia isn't going to change anything.

Seriously - who's idea was it to open the Summer with Australia playing a 2nd rate T20 side like Sri Lanka????

I still wonder what on earth was going through their heads. Why did Bancroft agree to do such a stupid thing? Why did Smith agree to it all going ahead, despite knowing perfectly well that it was against the rules? But, let’s let bygones be bygones. Who knew that one joke could spark such a lively debate?

Was supposed to be a bit light-hearted. I've said all morning through the blog that I enjoyed Smith's batting in the match. He is a great cricketer - probably the best test batsman of the modern game. Wasn't a lengthy ban if you ask me but then again I am English. That's all behind now so my personal view is that it should be forgotten - apologies once again if you felt the joke was a bit untoward but I stand by the joke. Just seemed a little serendipidous that he's coming back into the T20 squad a year before the T20 World Cup.

There’s also a similarity - they all copped the biggest penalty ever handed out to players who committed an offence made popular by captains of England, South Africa, India and Pakistan. They all did their time without moaning. They all worked at their game and came back post suspension and hoped to contribute to their national team

How was that tongue in cheek? It was a cheap shot at a bloke who’s done his (absurdly lengthy) time and loves playing cricket. If you intended some humour it was entirely lost on me

You have trouble with the truth? Or maybe, just maybe, new to cricket?

The thing about the world cup is you're going up against the absolute best. Having the best pure batsmen at 3 is going to be a huge asset as he's more likely to figure out how to survive and thrive against say a Jasprit Bumrah than a guy who's main form is BBL
