With the likes of Steve Smith and David Warner absent from the Australian setup for the past 12 months for well-documented reasons, the 2019 Allan Border Medal had the potential to become an award an outsider could claim this time around.

Unfortunately, no one with the exception of one Australian cricketer has been able to put together performances worthy of claiming such an award.

Pat Cummins has been the standout cricketer in recent times, meaning he has arguably become Australia’s most valuable player in the Test arena.

His ability to bowl quick and accurate has seen him become one of the world’s best bowlers. Whenever Australia need a wicket, he is the go-to man for Tim Paine.

His batting should not go under the radar either. His technique allows to play any format of the game. He can bat long periods of time, but also score when required.

Cummins’ fielding is also an aspect of his game which is at the highest level now. He very much is a complete cricketer, as we have seen in recent times.

Nathan Lyon has also been as consistent as ever, continuing to bowl with threat every time he is called upon, which probably makes him the second favourite behind Cummins for the medal.

If Cummins claims the Allan Border Medal, and he should, no one can question whether he deserves it or not.

It is a shame though more could not perform at the level Cummins has been in recent times, especially when one considers the absence of Smith and Warner.

You certainly do not play for the individual accolades, but many of the Australian boys will feel they have missed an opportunity to make history by winning the prestigious medal.

There will be plenty more awards handed out over the course of the night which will be covered on this blog, also.

Prediction
I believe I have made it clear already, but just to reiterate, it really is difficult to look past Cummins on this occasion.

He has taken his game to another level and is really the only standout Australian cricketer over the past season.

Cummins to claim the Allan Border Medal comfortably.

Pat Cummins has taken out the Allan Border Medal for 2019 at the Australian Cricket Awards in Melbourne. The quick has been outstanding over the past year, arguably becoming Australia’s most valuable cricketer in the Test arena. His ability to take a wicket when it’s most needed has made him Tim Paine’s go-to man. We also learnt that his batting should not be underestimated, especially in the Test arena. The trait of being able to bat long periods of time makes him more than useful down the order. Alyssa Healy was awarded the Belinda Clark Award after her sensational run of form recently. Healy polled 128 votes to win the award by a huge margin, the next best being Megan Schutt with 81 votes. Nathan Lyon was deemed the Test Player of the Year, after another superb season with the ball. Marcus Stoinis’ game has gone up another level in recent times, which saw him awarded the ODI Player of the Year. Healy’s form also saw her awarded the best female ODI Player of the Year. Her night did not end at that, however, as she also took out the T20 female International Player of the Year. Glenn Maxwell’s talent and performances proved too much to resist when it came to awarding the T20 International Player of the Year. Matthew Wade’s domestic form may have gone unnoticed by the national selection panel in recent times, but those who voted for the Domestic Player of the Year saw Wade as the best option. Heather Graham took out the female Domestic Player of the Year, also. When it came to rewarding the future of Australian cricket, Will Pucovski was the no-brainer when it came to awarding the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year. The Betty Wilson Young Cricketer of the Year was awarded to Georgia Wareham. Off the field, Moses Henriques was awarded the Community Champion Award for raising awareness around mental health. Billy Murdoch, Dean Jones and Cathryn Fitzpatrick were all inducted in Australian cricket’s Hall of Fame.

Amazed that Perry wasn't in the hunt. First player picked, surely! Nevertheless well done Healy for not only fine glove work but by being the batter that opponents loved to see the back of.
