One of England or New Zealand will lift the Cricket World Cup trophy for the first time when the two nations do battle at Lord’s in London. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

The English were one of the big favourites coming into the tournament, and despite a shaky road through the middle portion where they squandered games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they came good, surged into the finals and then destroyed Australia in Thursday’s semi-final.

It was one of most dominant, one-sided performances we have seen so far at the World Cup, and they will go into the final with absolute confidence.

Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow went all guns blazing at the top, while Joe Root also looks in good form, but it’s their bowling where the tournament hosts can expect to win this match.

Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes have been fabulous up front, while Adil Rashid has been really good with the ball.

Where it gets a bit tricky for England is with their fourth and fifth bowling options. Liam Plunkett, Mark Wood and Ben Stokes have struggled with the ball, and if their front-up bowlers don’t do a job and make sure the Black Caps are in recovery efforts, then it could get messy.

Of course, New Zealand have had to stage recoveries for most of the tournament. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor have often been in within the first powerplay thanks to failures at the top, with Martin Guptill out of form.

If Guptill can get it right though, he has the potential to be one of the most dangerous batsmen on the planet, and with a big-hitting middle and lower order, the Black Caps really do have the potential to score runs.

In saying that, this is a final and it may well be low-scoring with both teams nervous, so for that reason, the form of Trent Boult and Matt Henry with the new ball will be pivotal for the Kiwis.

Prediction
The slope of Lord’s should favour Boult, while Santner has been dangerous. Guptill is overdue for a good knock, and England just may not have the batting depth to get the job done when the pressure hits as they try to win a World Cup in front of their home fans.

New Zealand in a thriller.

Yes, not really of a world cup tournament final imo but it is what it is I guess.

Congratulations to England. I rather think that not since 1966 has England experienced such sheer dumb sporting luck.

Congratulations England a brilliant effort. Sad for my boys also a brilliant effort. No one incident won or lost the match and it’s absurd to suggest such. Everyone knew the rules going in and accepted them by playing. Just wasn’t to be for the kiwis today. Eerie feeling with parallels to 95 RWC for me. Without Susie though! :-)

England's last few tours of Australia? New tour, fairly new line-up. Different time, different outcome George.

Apologies. I’ve been celebrating. Surprised at your reaction. Most kiwis here in London being more sporting. Anyway, well played, great game but all the rules were in place before the final.

haha. We'll exact some revenge for you in the Ashes Zozza. 5-0 unless weather intervenes and I'm not being flippant; Australia has a seriously good in-form batting and bowling line up well suited to English conditions and the Dukes balls. Cannot wait.

Agreed. '99 was certainly a frenetic finish. But this match seemed on tenterhooks for its entirety, was higher stakes and had some memorable (bizarre even) moments that in themselves will be remembered for a long time to come.

There were a number of sliding doors moments in the game.

Yes it does. Though Santner's last ball ducking of a slow short ball and looking mightily proud of it afterwards didn't help nz's cause either.

Or maybe bring back the predecessor of the super over 'the bowl out' in case there is a 2nd tie like today. Still one of the funniest sights i seen in cricket. When part timers like sehwag and uttappa were hitting the stumps while Pakistan's quicks and afridi's deliveries bounced over the stumps.

2019-07-14T19:48:16+00:00

I'm a Kiwi, mate.

2019-07-14T19:46:42+00:00

I thought the '99 game between OZ & Sth Africa was the best, and most dramatic of One Day Cricket I had ever seen. But this one tops it. And it was the Final to boot. I'm still in a daze...but I'd still like to find Mitchell Santner and propose some lashings for ducking that last ball of the innings.

We are. Beating you in the semi just makes it more fun

2019-07-14T19:41:13+00:00

Lets face facts -- it took an extraordinary stroke of luck with that unintended boundary from Stokes as he was sliding his bat to make his ground -- to get England over the line. And then this obscure rule about who hit most boundaries when the super over was also a tie. The better team lost, it is as simple as that. But that is the beauty of sport -- sometimes lady luck just turns the screws and won't allow you to win despite being that much better than the opposition. Well done England -- enjoy your "victory".

well deserved. While starc and rohit might have lead the charts only Shakib was the only other contender ,but even then kane contributing 30% of the teams total and that knock in the semis would have edged shakib.

Yep. It feels like a T20 response doesn't it?

In a soccer penalty shootout each side gets 5 shots, if it’s still tied after that it goes to sudden death, imagine if a soccer penalty shootout was tied and the winner was determined by who had the most corners

I think (not entirely certain) this was the same pattern established in ipl and other t20 leagues for super overs in knockouts. If boundaries remained the same (and so do no of sixes) it goes to the standings in league stage or who won the match in the league stage encounter, neither case being in nz's favor.
