The Hobart Hurricanes return home after a long road trip and will be aiming to move one step closer to the minor premiership when they take on a struggling Brisbane Heat this afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4pm (AEDT).

The Hurricanes have been excellent throughout the season, with eight wins from their ten games to leave them at the top of the table as we hit the business end of proceedings.

The men from Hobart have played their last five matches on the road though, and lost two of them – the negative results coming at the start and end against the Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers respectively.

Outside of that though, they beat the Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers on the road, and in their four home games so far, are yet to register a loss.

With three of their final four games being played in Tasmania, it’s hard to see how the Hurricanes don’t finish top of the table, especially considering the form of Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short, who, for the second year in a row, are forming a formidable opening competition and are the top two run-scorers in the competition to date.

Added to some of their bowling performances, led by the lies of Riley Meredith and James Faulkner, who has 16 wickets for the season, and they have been hard to stop.

It’s been the opposite situation for the Heat, and their season is dangling by a thread.

Following another two losses against the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars – the latter of those from a seemingly strong position – they have been reduced to three wins and one no result from their ten games.

It’s a record which leaves them sitting second last on the ladder and more or less needing to win all of their four remaining games for a chance at the finals.

While their bowling has been inconsistent, it’s been the batting side of things which have let the Heat down.

Their middle order, even by BBL standards, is weak, and without Chris Lynn, Brendon McCullum and Max Bryant firing at the top (which they have failed to do far too often), they are more or less out of the game before it begins.

Predicition
Back at home, the Hurricanes will no doubt show us exactly why they are top of the table and cruising towards another finals series, all but ending the Heat’s campaign.

Hurricanes pretty easily.

Well this is the kind of season you have when you build a batting heavy squad around two inconsistant big hitters (requiring two accumulators down the order just in case) , a batting approach that's lead to formerly reliable batsmen getting out to impatient poor shots for single figures and a coach coaching his former captain and team mates. Some serious questions need to be asked at heat hq

Thanks for joining me this evening for our live coverage of the 2018-19 Big Bash League season as the Hobart Hurricanes rolled past the Brisbane Heat with ease at Blundstone Arena. Hopefully you enjoyed the call. Right now, it's time to switch over and join Oliver Matthews for his live coverage of the Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers at the Sydney Cricket Ground. I'll be back for Thursday night's clash between the Hurricanes and Strikers from 7:30pm (AEDT), then again on Friday for Day 1 of the second Test between Australia and Sri Lanka. Enjoy the rest of your evening and bye for now.

HOBART HURRICANES DEFEAT BRISBANE HEAT BY 9 WICKETS WITH 34 BALLS TO SPARE The Hobart Hurricanes have comprehensively hammered the Brisbane Heat during Match 42 of the Big Bash League, going past a very average score of 145 with over five overs to spare. Matthew Wade won the bat flip and sent the Heat in, with the 'Canes' bowlers having them in all sorts of bother during the powerplay. With Max Bryant first to go, Jofra Archer would then be the catalyst for the Heat to lose Brendon McCullum, Chris Lynn and Matt Renshaw in the space of four balls, with the collapse reading 4/0 off three balls. The Hurricanes, in their return home, struggled during the middle overs as Alex Ross and Jimmy Peirson put on 109 for the fifth wicket, but 145 was never likely to be enough on a pitch which was clearly good for batting. In reply, the Heat did get an early wicket with Matthew Wade departing after launching a ball onto the roof in the second over, but after that, it was all one-way traffic. Caleb Jewell (61 from 38) and D'Arcy Short (68 from 41), had no problems in putting on 132 at better than ten runs per over as they hammered the Heat to lock their position in at the top of the table and leave the Heat without any chance of making the finals. Brisbane Heat: 6/145 (20) Hobart Hurricanes: 1/146 (14.2)

So, Short finishes 68 from 41 not out, Jewell 61 from 38 and the partnership 132 from 12.2 overs. Wow. Too good from the Heat this afternoon.

FOUR
Short thought he had it done there. Chips a full ball through extra cover, but Doggett keeps it to two.

They take a long look at replays, then decide Doggett did in fact put a foot on the rope, so that’s that. The Hurricanes have beaten the Heat by 9 wickets with 34 balls to spare.
