Having both lost to Pakistan, India and New Zealand might already be playing off for a T20 World Cup semi-final spot. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEDT).

Pre-tournament favourites India were dealt a major reality check in their opening match, going down by ten wickets to the red-hot Pakistan. Gun openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were dismissed in an opening burst from star left-arm quick Shaheen Shah Afridi, and the manner of their dismissals is sure to give encouragement to the Black Caps’ own left-armer Trent Boult.

The Black Caps weren’t thrashed by quite as much, but were powerless to stop a six-hitting onslaught at the death from Asif Ali to lose with an over and change to spare. The loss of quick Lockie Ferguson for the rest of the tournament to injury is a major blow, especially after watching Tim Southee treated with disdain in the final overs. Plenty rests on the shoulders of spin twins Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner in Dubai tonight.

The Black Caps inflicted the 2016 T20 World Cup’s biggest shock in that tournament’s opener, skittling India for just 79 en route to an undefeated group stage. Can they repeat the dose here tonight, and leave the cricket monolith on death’s doorstep already?

I don’t doubt doubt that I would just still have De Grandhomme in the squad a a good experienced player can go at a good strike rate and give you a handy over. as well I don’t see the harm in having him on the bench.

Very disappointing to see the way India has played. They never turned up with the bat today. It’s not about loosing but the manner India lost was most disappointing and India doesn’t deserve to progress to next stage. Probably 2006 World Cup was one of the worst for India in recent times but this performance is equally worse. As if dropping SK Yadav wasn’t a bad move , Kohli moved Rohit to one down. To me Rahul never deserves to be in playing 11. His strike rate is always around 120 even in best flat tracks. With the conditions in Dubai, batsman have to target power play so that they can rotate strike after 6th over mark. Rahul was never keen to score runs .

@Mitchell. Because your namesake, Darryl Mitchell, is a seriously good, seriously underrated cricketer, and showed tonight what he can do at the top of the order, and is a fairly decent bowler if ever called upon.

Great win. Absolutely smashed them. If we can beat Afghanistan which will be tough it will be NZ v England in the semis. Time to get one back after the 2019 ODI WC.

Why don't NZ have De Grandhomme playing? I thought he was a decent T20 player.
