The second semi-final of the eighth season of the Big Bash League will be played on Friday, February 15, with the Melbourne Renegades taking on the Sydney Sixers at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. The match starts at 7:40pm local time. You can follow it live with The Roar below.

The stakes would be way higher for the Renegades who have never entered the final of the Big Bash League, and we are talking of seven previous editions.

What makes their entry into the semi-final an interesting one is their best batsman in the tournament has been one who has scored less than half the runs made by the top run-getter.

Sam Harper’s 299 is way lower than D’Arcy Short’s 637 runs, while the next best is Tom Cooper’s 267 runs.

Unfortunately for them, the Renegades will go into this semi-final without Mohammad Nabi, their third-best batsman and off-spinner who has picked eight wickets at a very acceptable economy-rate of 7.4 RPO.

The Sixers, led by Daniel Hughes and his 347 runs, have had four other 200+ scorers, which has helped but the one issue for them would also be the reason why they missed out on playing at home in this semi-finals.

A win over Melbourne Stars in their last league game or even a small loss would have ensured that.

Instead, in pursuit of a target of 169, the Sixers were bowled out for 74 and despite finishing level on points with the Renegades, they came third to their opponent’s second thanks to the net run-rate situation.

But where they might score over the Renegades is while the Melbourne side has had one bowler who has done bulk of the wicket-taking, three of the Sixers have chipped in with a bucketful.

Kane Richardson is the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 to his name, but Sean Abbott, Tom Curran and Steve O’Keefe, all representing the Sixers have captured a total of 60 wickets between them.

Prediction
The Sixers’ superior bowling attack as a pack and Nabi’s absence should have them as favourites to win this game.

I suspected the Renegades had it won when Abbott came on for the second last over, he is cannon fodder when the pressure is on. Go 'Gades! (and Vics :)

The commentators rave about Abbott. Takes the most wickets blah blah. But they never mention how many runs he gives away. Besides O’Keefe the bowling is soup kitchen slop.

What a finish. Win off the penultimate ball. It never looked like the Renegades were out of the game but they kept losing wickets in their chase and once Aaron Finch was out, the target looked very tough to get to. However, Dan Christian had a brilliant 19th over that saw him hit the first and the last ball for a six and take the Renegades to their first ever BBL final. The BBL08 final will be the first Melbourne derby. Sounds like a lot of fun!

The traditional choke by the Sixers. Only a Melbourne resident would watch the final.

Sixers are pathetic. Absolute crap. Abbott and edwards need to be sacked. The final should not be televised in NSW.

And that is that! The Renegades are through to the final with a drilling stroke through the covers. Win by three wickets with a ball to spare.

Shot. Four. Kane Richardson has thrown his hands at the ball, gets an edge and it nearly goes to the deep point fence for a six. Three needed off four. Should have been closer to stumps from the bowler. Single off the next ball takes it to two off three needed.

Gone! Hit-wicket! First ball of the final over and Boyce has trod on to his stumps. Wanted to go back and whip it, but hits the stumps. Seven needed off five.

Six! Whoa. What an end to the over. Just like it started... ...this time he gives himself room again and hits it over the covers for a six! Brilliant stuff and with just seven needed from six, the Renegades should be home.

Fourth time in a row, the ball goes to Edwards. This is too much of a coincidence I suppose. A single. 14 needed from eight.

And for the third time in a row, the ball goes to Edwards. This time he has been shifted to deep mid-wicket and it's hit there by Christian. Gets two more. 15 from nine.

A smashing hit down the ground goes straight to Edwards, who off the last ball had dived to his right. This time he overruns it and drops it. Two more. 17 needed from 10.

Length ball from Abbott and Christian has done what was so, so needed. Gives himself room by opening his stance and smacks it over the long-on fence for a six. 19 needed from 11.

Three singles from the first three balls and then a spanking shot down the ground gets 'fielded' by the stumps at the other end. Still, a couple of runs... ...which is followed by Christian getting a lofted cover-drive over the off-side for a six! What a much-needed shot that. Wide next ball and then a single to end the over. 25 needed from 12.
