The push for the Cricket World Cup finals will ramp up a gear when a desperate Pakistan clash with New Zealand, who can become the second team to secure their spot in the top four. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).
With Australia’s victory over England last night, they are the first team into the top four, and New Zealand can become the second tonight.
However, with England’s shock loss to Sri Lanka late last week, and the failure to Australia, they have thrown the competition wide open once again, and Pakistan could be the side to make the last semi-final spot their own.
They will need to hope England lose one or both of their remaining games, but can continue ramping up the pressure here with a win over the Black Caps.
From a Pakistani point of view, there is no better ground to play the Black Caps on that Edgbaston on either. Likely to take spin, it’s the one department where they are unquestionably better, while their aggressive batting should come to the forefront in the first ten overs if the ball doesn’t swing.
Trent Boult and Matt Henry in particular rely on that early movement, and if there is none, the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam can really look to build a platform for the Pakistan middle order to tee off.
Even if it all does go right though, it’ll be a tall order to topple the Black Caps, who are undefeated besides their washout against India.
The biggest problem is that they are yet to test themselves against the big guns with that wash out against the Indians, and so it’s a little uncertain exactly where they are at.
Their top order has been a bit up and down throughout World Cup, and while Martin Guptill is due for a big score, it’s the form of Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson which has been their saving grace.
Playing out Mohammad Amir will be the key here though. If they can do that and handle the Pakistani spinners, there are plenty of runs to be had.
Prediction
I tipped New Zealand earlier in the week, but the loss to England last night sways me the other way. On a likely spin friendly Edgbaston, a desperate side who have a knack of pulling out inconsistently big performances will take the win.
Pakistan in a thriller.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I agree with you Jeff. The laws state "if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps" https://www.lords.org/mcc/laws/the-wicket-is-down 29.1.2 is interesting seems to indicate breaking is not enough. They need to fall off

Well I got that wrong. The pakistanis did have the discipline to grind out a win. Well done to them, Kiwis should have picked the extra spinner.

Congratulations to our neighbour I guess. Well played. Babar azam is class act. But shaheen was really good to watch. He is cute too.

Pakistan peaking at the right time. Pressure on England. Harris Sohail has been such a huge inclusion into the team. He has made a massive difference. Shaheen Afridi continues his heat run against New Zealand. The great Wasim Akram’s bowling advice has helped him I guess. Babar Azam is all class and Sarfaraz - even though he is maligned a lot - captained the side really well. His tactics were great. Also, Pakistan’s was uncharacteristically brilliant. There was the odd misfiled but nothing more than that. Great stuff from the subcontinent giants. It should be interesting to see if they qualify for the semis or not.

New Zealand were very disappointing. Latham (even though he is vice-captain) has to be under the scanner. He dropped Babar Azaan when he was on 38 and Babar, being the class act he is, scored a ton. Munro, has to go. He doesn’t fire enough. Well done to Neesham and de Grandhomme with the bat. They put some respectability in the total. Neesham deserved a ton. Both of them have done well so far in this Cup when New Zealand have needed them.

I don't think the bail came up at all. It only came off after Guptill's foot followed through and hit the stumps. Paul Wilson was quick off the mark to give it Out as soon as he saw the lights. Anyway wasn't material to the outcome, but still curious. I am done for the morning. Cheers Scott, good call again.

It zinged, but I didn't see both ends of the bail lift off. Is it both ends or just one?

Lots of sliding doors moments, but I thought Williamson's bowling of Munro for 1 one over - when he had plenty of quality overs up his sleeve - which went for 9 and relieved pressure, and which was then followed by a Williamson over which went for 9 also (the quantity of runs may very well have been helped by the pressure release from Munro's preceding over) , really took the pressure off. What ended up being 2 overs for 18 runs, perhaps could have been 2 overs for 6 or 8 runs, perhaps. But that would have kept it above a run a ball at that stage and may just have changed the complexion of the final push by Pakistan. We'll never know, but a curious decision for mine.

Hmm, I thought the bails had been dislodged. Might need to watch it again.

PAKISTAN DEFEAT NEW ZEALAND 5 WICKETS Pakistan have kept their Cricket World Cup hopes alive with a six-wicket victory over New Zealand at Edgbaston. The Black Caps lost their way early with a run of wickets during the opening powerplay and never had enough on the board thanks to a brilliant Baber Azam century. The result puts all sorts of pressue on England, who now must win at least one of their remaining two games to qualify for the semi-finals, or potentially both. New Zealand: 7/237 (50) Pakistan: 4/238 (49.1)

Great win from Pakistan. That was methodical but far from easy.

Lost my connection there for a few balls. Question re that run out. The bail wasn't dislodged before the bat was across the line. How was that out?
