An injury-plagued South Africa will be looking to finally secure their first victory of the 2019 World Cup at the fourth attempt when they travel to Southampton to take on the West Indies. Join The Roar for live scores and ball-by-ball coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).
With an extended nine-game group stage at cricket’s most prestigious tournament this time around, three straight losses to kick off the tournament isn’t terminal for the Proteas yet – but make no mistake, they’ve entered the last-chance saloon.
Their form, though, gives little hope that they’ll be able to mount an inspired fightback to reach the final four – while losses to England and India were largely expected, an upset defeat to Bangladesh will be a bitter pill to swallow.
In all three games, their bowling has let them down, letting both England and Bangladesh rack up scores in excess of 300 before barely giving a yelp defending 230 against India – and with young quick Lungi Ngidi suffering a hamstring strain and champion Dale Steyn ruled out for the tournament with a shoulder injury, their stocks in that regard have never been thinner.
The West Indies are a neutral fan’s dream at this World Cup – a once-great cricketing nation seemingly on the cusp of a revival after decades in the wilderness, with a bevy of swashbuckling batsmen and lethal fast bowlers that make every match a wild ride.
All those facets have been on display in both their matches so far, and while a short-ball barrage proved too much for Pakistan, the chinks in their armour were laid bare in their loss to Australia.
Get through the quicks’ early onslaught, and their spinner, Ashley Nurse, can be targeted. And remove Chris Gayle early, and the Windies’ batting doesn’t exactly strike fear in the heart. For the Proteas to keep their World Cup dream alive, they must do all this and more.
Prediction
Who would have thought this time two weeks ago that South Africa would be in such a dire position this early in the tournament? But their bowling continues to be a weakness, and unless their power-packed batting line-up can produce something exceptional, the Windies have the firepower to cash in.
West Indies by 5 wickets/35 runs.
Can the Proteas kick-start a comeback for the ages with a much-needed win? Or will it be the Calypso Kings to bounce the 2015 semi-finalists out of the tournament?

Thanks for staying up, everyone! Cricket can be a fickle mistress at times, but hey, I got to rewatch the 1999 World Cup semi, so the evening hasn't been a total waste. Join me tomorrow for our blog of Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, right here on The Roar! (As I write, the forecast is for a bucketload of rain tomorrow in Bristol, but hey, let's not count our chickens just yet.) Adieu!

Well, a long-drawn out end to a match that was never likely to resume. Can't imagine either side will be too happy with this result- South Africa because they need every win they can get to try and scrape their way into the semi-finals, the Windies because they were well on top with those 2 early wickets when the rain settled in. Oh, well. Can't win 'em all. The second no-result of the World Cup after the total washout last week in Sri Lanka vs Pakistan.

It's official- the match has been abandoned.

Heading into the final hour now. If the match can start by 5pm UK time (that's 2am our time) we'll still have a 20/20 match- but that's looking as unlikely as pigs flying or Sri Lanka winning this tournament.

Well, just as the umpires were heading out for that inspection, the drizzle started again. That just about sums it up.

Next pitch inspection due for 3.45pm, so in 20 minutes. Some of the covers are off.

Aaaaand the rain's back and the covers are on again. Sigh.

More news- there's going to be a pitch inspection at 3.15pm local time, which is in about 25 minutes.

OK. So. Here's what's happening. The rain has stopped in Southampton, the sun is poking weakly through the clouds, and the covers are being carefully removed to the joy of the crowd. I don't want to jinx it here, but this could be on! If our prayers have been answered, we'll let you know what the revised match looks like. Still an hour before the 20/20 cutoff.

OH MY GOODNESS THE COVERS ARE COMING OFF!

Yeah, so... it's not getting better. Rain still a-tumblin' down, the covers are absolutely soaking wet, but we've still got 2 hours to go until we pass to point of no return, so... keep your fingers crossed?

Another wash out on the cards. The forecast for this doesn’t look good either. Some potentially great games might not happen at all.

Currently it's 1.38pm UK time, so we've still got 5 and a half hours or so to get play back underway for a minimum 20 overs per side, but that's looking unlikelier and unlikelier as the day goes on.

A moment of hope as Super soppers were rushed out onto the field to mop up the outfield as the rain showed signs of stopping, but regrettably it's started to drizzle again, dashing everyone's dreams. :'(

Cut off time is 5pm local for a T20 game, plenty of time left as it’s 13:30 there now
