Following the T20 matches, we head into the ODI series in Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:00pm AEST.

Australia were put under pressure during the T20 series at times and although they passed in the second T20I, the bowlers failed to defend 59 off three overs in the final T20I. In the longer white ball format, a trial by spin should not be anything surprising for the Aussies on Sri Lankan soil. This series cannot be taken lightly, as the Aussies will be playing their first ODI series with a near full-strength team for the first time since November 2020, although ICC ODI Super League points will not be on offer.

Australia’s top four is set with David Warner and Aaron Finch to open as Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne follow suit. Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey should also be in the playing XI as the question ponders on who should be the seam bowling all rounder in the lineup. Mitch Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Cam Green are all in the ODI squad, and while the battle for the role is tight, it will most likely go to Mitchell Marsh should he be fit, otherwise Marcus Stoinis is the next man in. Another question for the Aussies is whether Mitchell Swepson will play as the second spinner alongside Ashton Agar or will Jhye Richardson push Swepson out of the XI as the third seamer?

As for Sri Lanka, they have been inconsistent and currently sit outside of direct qualification to the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup due to their Super League standings. Although the Sri Lankans cannot rectify their standings this series, what better opportunity than to start off this series by causing an upset at Pallekele and show their progress? With the bat, Avishka Fernando is their key batter as he likes to strike the ball far and bat for long periods. With the ball, leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has done well in the T20I leg and will want to continue his stellar form into the one day arena.

Australia start the match as favourites, however rain is threatening to play spoilsport. A full match is unlikely to occur, however, we could have enough overs to constitute a match.
