The Sydney Thunder will host the Perth Scorchers in the 17th game of the Big Bash League. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:15pm (AEDT).
With the Marsh brothers retained in the Australian Test squad for now, the Scorchers will need to rely on their current top-order to get out of the rut they find themselves in.
It’s not so much that they have lost three out of the four matches they have played but the manner in which the batting has capitulated that will worry coach Adam Voges. Scores of 103, 147 and 107 do not make for pretty reading and even the match they did win, their chase of 89 against the Strikers was completed only in the 19th over.
As a result of which, just one Perth batsman has made a half-century and none of them average more than 32. What’s also striking is the lack of high strike-rates – none of the batsmen who have batted a sum total of more than 15 balls have a strike-rate of even 113.
The Thunder began well, on the other hand, but they lost their previous two games and are now involved in an early mid-table muddle with three other teams who are all on four points from four matches. The Hurricanes and Sixers are on eight and six points respectively at the moment.
What’s interesting to watch out in this game is how the Thunder batsman will go against a strong bowling attack.
With Jos Buttler leading the way, and Shane Watson, Callum Ferguson and Jason Sangha all capable with the bat, the Thunder have the firepower to pile on the runs. But with the Scorchers bowling attack consisting of Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff, who have shared nine wickets and are conceding a mere five an over, that Thunder batting line-up can be expected to be tested.
A lot could, however, depend on the nature of the pitch which has played a tad slower than most others, which case the Scorchers might have to look at other options too.
Prediction
Perth Scorchers to get back to their winning ways with a determined batting performance.

I'd leave out Willey and pick Cameron Green. Inglis is injured (turf toe) and will miss a while. Whiteman is a gem. They have to get games into him. I'd be questioning Klinger and Tye.

Scorchers are BBL wooden spooners for 2019. Maybe Voges is out of his depth with coaching?

I’d leave out Wiley and Bosisto and bring in Whiteman and Inglis

Scortchers are far to bowler heavy they need to drop a bowler for a batting all rounder.

We'll still be there. GO SCORCHERS!

The game should have been in the bags of the Thunder long ago. Not a surface on which you can chase down 10 an over for a long period, and definitely not on which 28 runs off the final two overs should have gotten close to. Instead, Turner kept hitting the fours, and helped by Sams' nerves, brought the Scorchers close to 4 off 1. Unfortunately he managed just two off the last ball. Needed some support from the others.

I had a heart attack on the last 4 balls. And then a rage attack after the final ball. I'm working on an article about the Scorchers

Well done Thunder. Keep those Scorchers out of the finals!

Last ball, four needed, the ball is whacked down the ground but all they can manage is two runs which means the Thunder have won by a single run. Well played Turner, 60 off 36 on a pitch where 7 an over looked above par for most part.

Two more off a mis-hit that goes over Watson at extra-cover. Four more needed from the final ball.

And another wide. Wow. Wow. Wow. Nervousness here from Sams. Six needed from two.

Oh my, my, wide ball. That's wide outside the off, it has turned away and gone almost outside the pitch! Seven from two.

Whoa, four more! Full-toss on his pads and Turner has managed to get it through the backward square-leg region for a four. Eight needed. Two balls.

Couple more off the third ball off a mis-hit - loads of them tonight - and that means they need 12 from the final three balls of the over.

A mis-hit off the first ball helps Turner a couple but it's off the next ball that the Scorchers skipper finally manages to instill some fear into the opposition - a forceful shot through the wide long-on region. Takes Turner to his 50 off 32. 14 needed.

Daniel Sams with the final over. 20 needed.

Bostisto goes for a reverse sweep off Rainbird but misses. Manages just a single. And then Turner misses the next and they are off for a bye. A slog off the final ball gets them two which means, despite all the throwing of the bats around, they manage just eight from the penultimate over. 20 needed from six.

Again, a good start to the over. Just four runs from the first three balls... 24 needed from nine.

Rainbird will bowl the 19th over. Look out for his very slow balls.

Oh my, is there still life in this game? It looked like the game was headed away from the Scorchers only five coming from the first four balls of the Green over but Turner smacks a four and a six off the final two. 28 needed from 12.
