Devon Conway is just the second New Zealander to score a Test double century on debut and the seventh male in history after he made 200 at Lord’s against England in the first Test.
From afar, Stokes appears to be more Botham than Imran. Captaincy may well be too much.
Then again Ricky P matured and became a great Captain after a spirited youth.
You never know.
With few alternatives perhaps they just give him a crack and see what happens.
You are welcome to your views but many will disagree with them. I remind you that Stokes is the vice captain and in that role the natural successor to the captain.
Don't agree with your criticism of England's batting yesterday. Given the nature of the pitch and the fragility of the England batting, St Kane's declaration was less generous than it seemed. Nor did the Kiwis go out of their attacking way with their bowling lines and field settings. I do agree though that we seem to have swapped one of the world's great test batsmen for one of the world's worst test captains. The problem is who to replace him with (Stokes is not the answer). I fear we are stuck with Root until after another shambolic Ashes tour. I also agree with an earlier correspondent's view that Burns and Sibley won't score runs in Australia. Crawley might have might joy, albeit at present he seems compleletly out of touch.
I take your point but this lot where no wear near to England's full test side. Instead we got more evidence of the search for an opening pair that's been going on for over a year. The first time a limited crowd could watch a game and long before the end they were falling asleep. Solution? give the captaincy to the vice captain and we will get a totally new approach and let Stokes's captain the side. It won't happen but it should do.
NZ unlucky not to get the win at Lords. The English batting had better improve a whole lot vs our bowlers this summer to have much of a chance. Sibley, Lawrence, Burns (notwithstanding his century!), Crawley may just get away with it at home, just not up to test standard away in my humble opinion.

So nail the fielding team as well. Its a fixable problem but the ICC is refusing to try to fix the problem
The most boring last day cricket match I've ever watched. England only wanted 280 odd but never made any attempt to get them. They were playing under orders and you can easily spot the one who gave the orders. Root is a fine batsman but as a captain xxxxx
100 overs in 1 day? We dont get 90 let alone 100. I have a simple solution tho. Just play 30 overs then have lunch. Start usual post lunch time to bowl another 30 then start normal post tea time for 30 more. Lets see if the players dont need their fixed lenth breaks enough or if they start getting the 30 overs a session we require.

I remember Quade Cooper playing 50+ tests for Aus and he never became an Aus citizen
Is there a case for 5 day Tests in UK and maybe NZ and SL and 4 elsewhere?
Personally I’d prefer they were all 5 days, though I can see the argument for 4 days at 100 overs in Australia, S Africa and India in terms of tight scheduling.

Fielding team would probably be happy to slow things down and give the batsmen little respite in terms of a break.

4 day test's would never work in England, we get plenty of rain, it turns the grass green.

Imagine if we played 4 day Tests. Today would be the last day...

Marnus came as a ten year old, same as Watling to NZ, and Stokes to England.

3rd day washed out, probably a draw will be the result.
