Dutch Grand Prix: Formula One live race updates, blog

By Jawad Yaqub / Roar Guru

Formula One is back after its mid-season break, restarting with the popular Dutch Grand Prix at the seaside Zandvoort circuit. Tune in from 10:50pm (AEST) for live blog coverage and lap-by-lap updates on The Roar.

The first half of the season was all about Red Bull and reigning world champion Max Verstappen, where the team and driver broke several records en route to an unbeaten run. Red Bull are yet to be defeated in 2023, while Verstappen has won 10 of 12 races – including eight consecutively.

As a result, the Dutchman is on track for an inevitable third world championship with a 125-point lead over teammate Sergio Perez; while Red Bull have an unassailable 256-point advantage over their rivals in the constructor’s standings.

Coming to the 4.2km historic and technical Zandvoort circuit, it is difficult to see anyone beyond the home favourite in Verstappen targeting a third straight Dutch Grand Prix win, as well as going to equal Sebastian Vettel’s 2013 record of nine wins on the bounce.

A wet-dry qualifying saw some mixed results, with the likes of Lewis Hamilton eliminated in Q2 and Alexander Albon taking the Williams to the lofty heights of the second row of the grid. Rookie teammate Logan Sargeant also featured with his maiden Q3 appearance.

Though it was Verstappen who put a mighty 0.537-seconds on McLaren’s Lando Norris for pole. George Russell starred for the second row, where his Mercedes teammate couldn’t while both Ferraris and Perez were further back in the top ten. Charles Leclerc having an incident filled Saturday, as well as a crash in Q3.

Grid position is crucial, with overtaking limited at Zandvoort except for the extended DRS run coming out of the final corner onto the main straight and into the swooping right-hander Tarzan corner that is Turn 1.

Strategy will depend on weather, with some rain expected. If conditions remain dry, the 72-laps could see multiple stops and the potential for teams to hang out for Safety Cars. In 2022 the race was neutralised twice.

A change on the grid too at AlphaTauri again, with Daniel Ricciardo out injured after breaking a metacarpal bone during Friday practice. The Aussie crashed at Turn 3, just after compatriot Oscar Piastri found the wall there too. AlphaTauri put forward their reserve driver in Kiwi Liam Lawson, who will start his maiden grand prix from last.

Verstappen winning his home grand prix might be inevitable, but a fascinating Dutch Grand Prix is in store with the mixed grid behind him.

Thanks Damo. Yes, impressed with Lawson despite the penalty for impeding early on. Having a proper practice program in Monza should see him only get better next time out.

RACE REPORT Max Verstappen has won his third consecutive Dutch Grand Prix, with another stellar drive from pole position to equal Sebastian Vettel’s all-time record of 9-straight wins. A race run in challenging conditions, with Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly joining the Dutchman on the podium. Rain immediately hit the Zandvoort circuit, with Perez leading a host of drivers on the second lap in for intermediate tyres. This allowed the Mexican driver to cycle through into the lead after his teammate Verstappen pitted on the following lap. The start of Charles Leclerc’s woes also started on Lap 2, when a late call from the driver to pit saw Ferrari unprepared and a slow stop resulted in the Monegasque falling out of the top ten. Contact with Oscar Piastri as well caused floor damage to the Ferrari, resulting in an eventual retirement. McLaren left Lando Norris out until Lap 4 before pitting, as did Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton. George Russell had it worse, coming in on Lap 5 which put all three out of top ten contention early. Debutant Liam Lawson was penalised 10-seconds for impeding Kevin Magnussen in the pit-lane. Some bold overtakes on Leclerc, as well as passes on the restart saw the 21-year old Kiwi finish thirteenth in his maiden race. With the track drying up, Red Bull elected to pit Verstappen ahead of Perez which allowed the polesitter to undercut his teammate and retake the lead on Lap 13. Russell was left fuming on the radio to Mercedes down in eighteenth, remarking that he ‘was forecast for a podium.’ Though taking a set of hard tyres on Lap 17 during the Safety Car period when Logan Sargeant crashed at Turn 8 did benefit the Briton. The middle portion of the race saw the likes of Alexander Albon shine, having not pitted for inters when it rained and then taking a set of soft tyres from the start, 44-laps into the race. He and Yuki Tsunoda starred here. Though Tsunoda’s race came undone when AlphaTauri elected not to pit again for slick tyres and the likes of Albon on fresh mediums, Hamilton, Norris and Piastri were able to relegate the Japanese driver out of the top ten. Lap 61 saw another significant downpour, with drivers led by Perez coming in for inters again. Verstappen and Alonso, who’d retaken third from Sainz were in on Lap 62 – though conditions were more appropriate for full wet tyres. Guanyu Zhou ended up in the barriers on the outside of Tarzan corner, which triggered the Virtual Safety Car and then the Red Flag with conditions deemed too treacherous to continue even on the wet tyres. The race restarted on Lap 65 with two laps behind the Safety Car, before Verstappen led the pack away. Alonso thought better of challenging the Red Bull for the win, while Perez was penalised 5-seconds for speeding in the pit-lane and lost a podium to Gasly. Russell sustained a puncture after minor contact with Norris on the penultimate lap, putting an end to a difficult day for the Briton. While Hamilton narrowly missed out on fifth behind Sainz.

Lap 70/72: Hamilton is all over the rear of Sainz's Ferrari as he targets fifth place. It could also be an extra place depending on if they're within 5 seconds of Perez, who has that 5-second penalty.

Lap 68/72: 5-second time penalty to Perez for speeding in the pit-lane and this could potentially cost him his podium, with Gasly only 2.4 seconds behind. Russell has problems and is crawling into the pits, he looks to be out of this race. Puncture it sounds like it.
