Formula One 70th Anniversary Grand Prix live blog, race updates

Valtteri Bottas will start from pole position ahead of title leader Lewis Hamilton in tonight’s Formula One 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone. Follow The Roar for live race updates and a blog of the race at 11:10pm (AEST).

Even amid the pandemic, which has impacted the whole world in ways not previously imaginable, we can find time to pause and celebrate a special milestone for Formula One, which 70 years ago first roared into life.

In 1950, at the same Silverstone Circuit around which the drivers of today will contest the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, famous names such as Alberto Ascari and Juan Manuel Fangio competed in the first-ever Formula One race.

Though Silverstone isn’t exactly the same as the World War II airfield of the 1950s, the 5.8-kilometre track is one of the most challenging of the modern sport and among its fastest.

Last week’s British Grand Prix here was dominated by Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, though victory didn’t come without drama in the late stages of the race when he, teammate Valtteri Bottas and McLaren’s Carlos Sainz all suffered tyre failures.

Pirelli have since confirmed the issue resulted from the increased loads on the tyres, which are the same as those used in 2019 after the teams rejected the 2020-spec compounds late last year. But that hasn’t stopped the tyre supplier from going a level softer this weekend with the C2, C3 and C4 compounds.

This should hopefully see more variation in race strategy, with multiple stops expected to ensure the tyres don’t reach that same level of wear as they did in the previous race.

Bottas responded by claiming pole position by only 0.063 seconds over Hamilton for what stands as a crucial race for his title aspirations. The Finn will start the grand prix 30 points behind the Briton in the championship after failing to score last weekend.

Nico Hulkenberg is again standing in for Sergio Perez, who returned another positive COVID-19 test ahead of this weekend.

The German had his race chances cruelled last weekend, his first substituting for the Mexican, by a clutch gremlin that had him not even start the race. This weekend he lines up an impressive third on the grid ahead of Max Verstappen in what’s been a controversial weekend for Racing Point – they’ve been heavily penalised for their brake duct design being the same as the 2019 Mercedes.

Both Racing Point cars start inside the top six but will need to execute cleanly in the race to capitalise on the opportunity for a podium, with the likes of Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo in the Renault in the mix also.

Can F1 conjure up a surprise for its special 70th Anniversary Grand Prix? Or will we see another runaway race from the class of the field, Mercedes? Either way, it will be a race for Bottas to beat Hamilton.

Tune in once again from 11:10pm (AEST) on The Roar as we get set for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix from the home of British motorsport at Silverstone.

So that then wraps up the Silverstone double header and we have the Mercedes streak broken in 2020. I'm sure people will take keen interest that conditions in Barcelona where we're headed next week will be scorching, so if this race was interesting and wait and see what happens at the Spanish Grand Prix. Thanks again for tuning in for this live blog on The Roar for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix and we'll return here same time next week for what should be another great race in Spain. Laters!

RACE REPORT It was another race of tyre management at Silverstone as F1 celebrated its 70th anniversary with an incredible victory for Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing. The step softer tyres from last week’s British Grand Prix were the talking point throughout the weekend and during the 52-lap race they certainly played their part – particularly affecting world championship leader Mercedes’ race. Pole sitter Valtteri Bottas led away in the early stages of the race, with his teammate Lewis Hamilton in behind. Both drivers starting on the medium tyres immediately began to struggle with blistering. It took until Lap 14 and 15 for the two leaders to pit, though for Verstappen who’d leapfrogged Nico Hulkenberg on the start for third – he’d gambled on the hard tyre from qualifying yesterday to take the lead of the race. Even on the hard tyres, both the Mercedes cars struggled in the hot temperatures and this allowed Verstappen to pit without losing the lead – while Mercedes had to try a gamble of their own with the second stops. Verstappen pitted on Lap 33 and so did Bottas in response, while Mercedes left Hamilton out for another 10-laps which gave the championship leader fresher tyres at the end of the race. This then compromised Bottas’ race as his teammate was easily able to round him up for second. A mega 34-lap stint on the hard tyre and one-stop strategy saw Charles Leclerc take an emphatic fourth, which was not expected of Ferrari as his teammate Sebastian Vettel survived a first lap spin to finish outside the points again. If it wasn’t for Leclerc’s one-stopper, then Alexander Albon had the pace for fourth in the sister Red Bull after he started ninth. A solid result regardless for the under-pressure Thai driver, finishing ahead of the Racing Points of Lance Stroll and Hulkenberg. A blow to Racing Point, who were also docked 15-points in the constructor’s championship after the FIA found them in breach of their sporting regulations over their brake duct designs. Tyre issues also hampered the likes of McLaren and Renault, who both scraped some points with Esteban Ocon in eighth and Lando Norris in ninth. Daniel Ricciardo who started inside the top five, suffered a spin when battling with Carlos Sainz as both drivers finished outside the points. And another point in the bag for AlphaTauri, though this time claimed by Daniil Kvyat who brought his car home in tenth after his crash during last week’s race.

Not bad for running apparently illegal rear brake ducts for every race of the season though! :silly:

They [Red Bull] didn't have the problems that we had today." "I don't know if anyone else struggled with blistering like we did." BOTTAS - "Very frustrating starting from pole and finishing third isn't ideal." "Our strategy was far from ideal." "There was a chance to keep up with Max, but as soon as I started to push the tyres blistered." "Disappointing day, move on."

So much for Hulk getting the fastest lap. I assumed the change to softs might've been maybe a crack at the fastest lap, even though I know the softs haven't been great.
