Formula One Belgian Grand Prix live blog, race updates

By Jawad Yaqub / Roar Guru

Lewis Hamilton will start the 2020 Formula One Belgian Grand Prix from pole ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, while Aussie Daniel Ricciardo will line up fourth. Join The Roar for a live blog and race updates from 11:10pm (AEST).

The steam train that is the 2020 F1 season continues rolling along, with Belgium marking the start of another three consecutive weeks on the road for the championship.

Typically run as the first race after the summer break, this year it’s after only one weekend off that the series arrives at the seven-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, one of the most demanding on the calendar.

The race will be run over 44 laps with one of the sport’s most picturesque backdrops, the circuit scything its way through the lush Ardennes forest with plenty of undulation to challenge drivers and their cars.

Championship leader and three-time winner in Belgium Lewis Hamilton currently holds more than a race wins worth of points as an advantage over Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.

If a credible challenge were to be mounted against the six-world champion, this would be the race for either Bottas or Verstappen to start making inroads lest they fall out of touch with the consistent Briton.

It’s perhaps a tall order for Verstappen. Despite being only around a tenth slower than the Mercedes car in race trim during Friday practice, his car still possesses an overall performance deficit to the championship leaders.

But with the prospect of rain on the forecast, anything might yet happen, even if the obvious is that Hamilton and Mercedes will outclass the competition in changeable conditions, as shown back in Hungary.

Hamilton claimed pole position by a comfortable half-second margin ahead of teammate Bottas, with Verstappen starting third at the head of the second row.

However, the real intrigue for this race sits behind the top three, with Daniel Ricciardo starting the race fourth ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Alexander Albon, both of whom are outside threats for the podium.

Even varying conditions won’t flatter Ferrari and its current predicament. After struggling through the entire weekend at the bottom of the field, the red cars only just scraped themselves out of Q1 to qualify 13th and 14th.

The SF1000 has an overall pace deficit, and it isn’t even entirely to do with the engine being down on power. A free choice of starting tyre may help them push for a top-ten finish, though it shouldn’t be counted on.

Another Hamilton masterclass in season 2020? The prospect seems as good as guaranteed.

Max Verstappen summed up this race for all of us. If I didn’t know better I would swear that Lewis is in cahoots with the Race broadcasters when he messages” “ I’m not happy with the front right” as if he isn’t actually out on a pleasant Sunday drive around the Belgian countryside. Poor old Crofty and Martin must be getting jack of trying to hold the audience with suggestions of rain or Mercedes tire degregation. Powerhouses like Mercedes learn from balls ups like Silverstone and the fact that Dan Ricciardo in his Renault was able to rip off the fastest lap ( on lap 44 ) demonstrates how far below their limits Hamilton, Bottas and even Verstappen were travelling. As for Ferrari, this season is producing something I thought was impossible: pity for Sebastian Vettel and their enormous fan base. I guess that is something worth staying up for.

Counts towards constructors’ points too.

Is that fastest lap bonus point just for the driver or for the constructor as well?

How could you say such a thing? :silly: In seriousness, that would be great to see but it might be a case of close but not close enough for Ricciardo. Luckily for Cyril Abiteboul because then he doesn't get a tattoo.

Yes I know, just pointing out we need someone in Mercedes to at least challenge Hamilton for the championship. Even Max & RB need a tyre situation at Merc to sneak a win. Even at supposed "RB tracks": Austria & Hungary, Merc dominated.

Thanks for another great call Jawad. That would rub salt in the wounds of Ferrari if Hamilton equals Schumacher's win record at Mugello in Ferrari's 1000th GP! We are fortunate to be able to tune in every week to watch this legend. Monza is going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons if you're a Ferrari fan (lucky you). For the rest of us, it's always brilliant to watch any F1 car go full pelt around Monza! Could the fastest lap ever be broken? That's an exciting prospect. Take care Jawad. Talk to you in the week mate.

Another masterclass from Lewis Hamilton and he is now only 2 wins away from equalling Michael Schumacher's all-time F1 wins record of 91. It's definitely a matter now of when this will happen, with Mugello in two weeks time the earliest possible race for it to be matched. Though for now, we get ourselves ready to go to Monza in less than seven days time for the Italian Grand Prix and what is always a special race at the Cathedral of F1! Until then, thank you again for tuning in to this live blog on The Roar for the Belgian Grand Prix and I shall be back for Monza next week. See ya'll later!

Good to see Max still in second in the championship but I don’t think he’ll keep second after Monza. I fear that Red Bull will be no match for the mighty Mercedes.

Yep, unfortunately only Max is consistent enough to challenge Lewis. It'd be good to have Rosberg back as Bottas is just too hot and cold, and lacks that fighting spirit that Rosberg had.

Fair enough Micko. There was that optimism at the start of the year, but when Lewis is as magnificent as he is, there's little to no chance of Bottas doing well. He's the wingman. I would like to think that Red Bull can get back up close to Mercedes because we have seen flashes of brilliance from them and their problem is that they just didn't improve as much as Mercedes did. Ferrari's a lost cause at the moment.

RACE REPORT It was another cruise from pole position to the chequered flag for Lewis Hamilton, who stormed to an 89th career victory at the Belgian Grand Prix – despite some late tyre concerns. The championship leader ran relatively trouble free during the race, nailing a solid start ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas and then executing a trouble-free pit-stop during the Safety Car period on Lap 12. Bottas completed a Mercedes one-two finish, getting his best result since the season opener in Austria – with Max Verstappen enduring a lonely race behind them to finish third. All of the top three had similar tyre concerns at the end of the race, similar to that in Silverstone – though all survived without making an additional pit-stop. The Safety Car on Lap 11 was triggered by a crash from Antonio Giovinazzi for the second year running. A wheel from the Alfa Romeo flew off and hit George Russell’s Williams too, taking both drivers out of the race. Thankfully neither driver was harmed. There was heartbreak too for Carlos Sainz, who due to an exhaust problem on his McLaren was unable to even start the race – adding to the ill-fortune the Spaniard has had in 2020 so far. An interesting battle for the midfield unfolded though involving the other McLaren of Lando Norris, the Renault of Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon towards the end of the race for fifth. Albon, who showed that he was quick across the weekend qualifying fifth, ended up losing out by a poor strategy call to go onto the medium tyres. The Red Bull driver was displaced by Ocon on the final lap for fifth, though held off Norris. Not too far behind was Pierre Gasly who put in another stunning drive from twelfth to eighth. There was concern after the Frenchman started on the hard tyre and ended up not being able to pit in the Safety Car period, that he would lose out – though the 24-year old charged back up the field to finish in the points. Gasly not only finished ahead of the Racing Points who endured a tougher race than of late, but breezed past the Ferraris who perhaps had their most disappointing race of the year. Both Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc lacked pace all-round, but their power deficit was really exposed on the long Kemmel Straight. The fastest lap honours were taken by Daniel Ricciardo in fourth, who after a lonely race in the Renault – vindicated the French manufacturer’s overall performance at this high-speed track, which bodes well for the next race in Monza.

I thought it finally might be his year, but Bottas just isn’t consistent enough. Next year we have to hope RB can significantly close the gap so Lewis & Max can fight, otherwise we’ll just have to hold out for 2022.
