Formula One British Grand Prix live blog, race updates

With only a week’s break, Formula One roars back into action at the home of British motorsport as a Silverstone double-header starts another hat trick of races in the 2020 world championship. Join The Roar for a live blog and race updates from 11:10pm (AEST).

Reigning world champions Mercedes have enjoyed an unbeaten run across the opening three races, as Lewis Hamilton overtook teammate Valtteri Bottas for the lead of the championship last time out in Hungary.

The 5.8km driver circuit of Silverstone has been a fortress for the silver juggernaut during the hybrid era, having won all but one race since 2014 there as well as having taken every pole position.

It was Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari who won in 2018, though those dizzying heights seem a distance memory for the Scuderia, as their CEO John Elkann in a rare statement ruled out any expectation of winning until 2022, which would be a bitter blow to fans of the Prancing Horse.

With Red Bull also struggling with their volatile RB16, even at circuits they were expected to challenge Mercedes, it is difficult to see anyone at this stage toppling the Hamilton and Bottas combination.

Though for Bottas this is a crucial race to steal back the momentum from his teammate if he is to mount a credible challenge for a maiden title this year, while Hamilton will be chasing a record seventh win on home soil to extend his lead.

The Briton will start from an impressive pole position leading teammate Bottas, with whom he raced wheel-to-wheel last year at Silverstone. Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc will look to mount a challenge from the second row.

It is an impressive fifth place on the grid too for Lando Norris in his home race, starting ahead of McLaren teammate Carlos Sainz in seventh, as the pair get set to haul more points for the British team.

One big talking point before the weekend started was Sergio Perez being ruled out of the Grand Prix, after being the first driver to test positive to COVID-19. Having been placed into self-isolation on Thursday, the Mexican was described to be “physically well and in good spirits,” despite the positive test.

Nico Hulkenberg was flown in at the 11th hour to substitute for his former teammate for the next two races. The German qualified 13th, while Lance Stroll in the other Racing Point will start an impressive sixth.

Can anyone stop Hamilton on home soil from extending his lead in the standings during this truncated championship? Be sure to tune in from 11:10pm (AEST) on The Roar for live blog coverage as we get set to race the British Grand Prix.

Always the bridesmaid but never the bride. Some real bad luck so far this season for Bottas.

Bottas will need lots of incredibly good luck (implying lots of bad luck for Hamilton) to win the championship from here!

Giovinazzi's time penalty means he drops down to P14. So Russell moves up to P12 and Sainz up to P13.

So only a 7 day gap between now and the next time we race at this very circuit and as some of you have already pointed out, the different tyre compounds we will see and potentially hotter weather might cause for more tyre issues. Until then however thanks for tuning in for this live blog on The Roar for the British Grand Prix. Plenty to talk about as always and I look forward to coming back next week for the very special 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Bye for now.

This is similar though, I'm sure you'll agree. So there's some precedent as to how to handle this if action is needed.

Hope we don't get an exact repeat of 2013. That was properly chaotic.

RACE REPORT It was seventh heaven for Lewis Hamilton who won his seventh British Grand Prix at Silverstone, after an incredible finish to the race which saw Valtteri Bottas lose second with a tyre blowout. Up until the final laps of the race it was ‘smooth sailing’ for the Mercedes drivers out the front, as Hamilton led away from Bottas with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen behind in third. Lap 50 saw Bottas run wide and ultimately his tyre delaminated from there which invited the Red Bull into second place, whilst the Finn plummeted down the order to eleventh. Hamilton’s front tyre also deflated in similar fashion, though having had enough of a lead he was still able to limp home on three wheels to the chequered flag, while as a precaution Verstappen was pitted with a lap to go and was able to set the fastest lap too. As a result of the Bottas failure, the lonely Charles Leclerc who was consigned to fourth was handed a surprise visit to the podium in third, to provide a boost to Ferrari who endured another difficult weekend. The race started with an incident between Alexander Albon and Kevin Magnussen which saw the Red Bull make contact with the Haas and send the Dane into the gravel and out the race. A Safety Car was deployed, while Albon was penalised 5-seconds. Another Safety Car was deployed on Lap 12 when Daniil Kvyat endured a massive crash at the high-speed Maggots corner. The Russian was uninjured thankfully and during this second Safety Car, all the drivers made a switch to the hard tyre. The only one not to stop was Romain Grosjean who was sitting as high as fifth and made it difficult the midfielders to pick him off. The Frenchman was handed a black and white flag for his movements in defence against Carlos Sainz and then Daniel Ricciardo – before he pitted on Lap 38. Unfortunately for Sainz, he suffered from the same tyre delamination as Hamilton and Bottas at the front and lost what was likely a guaranteed top six finish. This benefitted Ricciardo who secured Renault’s best finish of the year in fourth. Double delight too for Renault with Esteban Ocon too benefitting from the tyre failures up front, with the Frenchman finishing sixth behind Lando Norris. Racing Point would have been disappointed with their race, especially with their substitute driver Nico Hulkenberg unable to start the race with a power-unit related gremlin. Lance Stroll meanwhile lost ground at the start and then was unable to race his midfield rivals, losing out to an excellent Pierre Gasly and Albon following his penalty.

Is this because they are less durable tyres anyway? I'm not the most technically minded bloke in the world!

They might need to do a tyre test in Friday practice when the mercury should be nearing 30C.

They'll be an enquiry anyway at Mercedes to figure out what the [insert expletive] happened there.

Well, it's softer compounds and potentially hotter temperatures. The FIA Technical Delegation may change tyre pressures, similar to how they responded to tyre delaminations at Silverstone in 2013. Safety will be the key to any final decision on tyres for next week. May be mandatory pit stops.

Definitely will need to two-stop as a minimum next week then if they've got softer compounds!
